Book Synopsis Laboratory Diagnosis in Neonatal Calf and Pig Diarrhoea by : Peter W. de Leeuw
Download or read book Laboratory Diagnosis in Neonatal Calf and Pig Diarrhoea written by Peter W. de Leeuw and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years several "new" infectious agenLs have been associated with neonatal diarrhoea in both calves and pigs. Furthermore, important additional information has become available as regards enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infec tions in both species. Although still much has to be learned, it is likely that in many field cases differnt agents act in concert. Therefore an integrated approach to the problem of neonatal diarrhoea appears to be necessary, particularly in the field research. Such an approach requires a series of diagnostic techniques. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together a limited number of scientists that are actively involved in neonatal diarrhoea research, in order to discuss present knowledge and to produce proceedings containing review articles, new developments and laboratory manuals of relevant diagnostic techniques. x This publication constitutes a collection of scientific pa pers and laboratory manuals on diagnostic techniques for en teropathogenic agents in neonatal diarrhoea in calves and pigs, presented and discussed during a workshop in the EEC Program me of Coordination of Agricultural Research on Protection of the Young Animal against Perinatal Diseases, held at the Central Veterinary Institute, Department of Virology, Lely stad, the Netherlands, June 3-5, 1980. Ireland ABSTRACT Simple techniques for diagnosis of enteric viral infections by direct electron microscopy of faeces are described.
Book Synopsis Virus Infections of Ruminants by : Z. Dinter
Download or read book Virus Infections of Ruminants written by Z. Dinter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. As its title suggests, this book is intended to give exhaustive information on virus infections and diseases occurring in ruminants. Each virus and corresponding disease is described in a separate chapter, and the chapters are ordered according to current virus classification. Contributing authors are experts on the virus and disease they describe. Where necessary, the text is accompanied by tables and pictures. The accent is placed on diagnosis of the disease by clinical observations including epizootological data. There is also a description of the laboratory procedures of diagnostic virology, and suggestions concerning control measures (e.g. vaccination and/or eradication policy). This book should prove indispensable to: the practising veterinarian, by facilitating recognition of a viral disease, and giving advice on collecting appropriate specimens for laboratory investigation; the veterinary virologist by aiding the choice of appropriate
Book Synopsis Viral Diarrheas of Man and Animals by : Linda J. Saif
Download or read book Viral Diarrheas of Man and Animals written by Linda J. Saif and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-12-31 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains valuable contemporary information and illustrations on widespread and common enteric viral infections. Critically reviewed are enteric viruses which cause diarrhea in man and animals. Attention is given to rotaviruses, adenoviruses, coronaviruses, toroviruses, Norwalk agent, parvoviruses and other small round viruses. The book describes the morphologic, physiochemical and antigenic properties of the viruses. It reviews the means of detecting and cultivating these viruses. Also considered are pertinent data on the epidemiology of these infections and potential means of control. This publication presents invaluable information for researchers and students in human and veterinary medicine and virology.

Book Synopsis The Reoviridae by : Wolfgang K. Joklik
Download or read book The Reoviridae written by Wolfgang K. Joklik and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now just 20 years since Gomatos and his co-workers at the Rocke feller University showed that the nucleic acid in reovirus particles is double-stranded RNA (dsRNA). This discovery created great excitement, for dsRNA was at that time under intense investigation as the replicative form of viral genomes consisting of single-stranded RNA. An equally interesting and important finding followed soon after: it was found that the reovirus genome consists, not of a single nucleic acid molecule, but of 10 discrete "segments," each with its specific sequence content and each transcribed into its own messenger RNA. It is clear now that these segments are genes. Not surprisingly, the availability of a viral genome 10 unlinked genes has permitted some unique lines of in consisting of vestigation in molecular biology. Mammalian and avian reoviruses proved to be but the first of several viruses recognized as sharing Similarity in size and morphology and ge nomes consisting of 10, II, or 12 separate genes. These viruses are dis tributed throughout living organisms; among the natural hosts of mem bers of this virus family are vertebrates, Insects, and plants. Members of the Reoviridae family differ widely in the virulence that they exhibit toward their hosts . . For example, the first discovered mam malian reovirus literally is, as the name signifies, a "respiratory enteric orphan" virus, that is, a virus unassociated with disease.
