Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reminiscences of a Texas Missionary In the month of. March, 1852, six Oblate Fathers and one Lay Brother, accompanied by four Nuns of the Incarnate Word, two Ursuline Sisters, four Brothers of Mary, and eighteen Seminarians, bade adieu to "La Belle France" and went aboard the sailing vessel "La Belle Assise," at Havre, en route for Texas. "My native land adieu! adieul I cannot always stay with you, stay with you." The wharf is crowded, thousands are there, in expectation of an unwonted spectacle. The saintly Bishop Odin, in his episcopal robes, blesses the band of missionaries from the pier and then goes back to Paris, in the interest of his diocese. The ship leaves its moorings, the cannon booms, the Ave Maris Stella is sung by thirty-five voices, "Adieu ma belle France." The sacrifice is made joyfully, "Hilarem datorem diligit Deus." Some sing, "Partons pour la Syrie." I saw tears trickling down the cheeks of a tender-hearted seminarian, as he cast a last glance on the coast of France disappearing on the horizon. "Adieu, mother." Fifty-two days between the immensity of the firmament and the immensity of the ocean taught us to appreciate the fixity of mother earth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Yates the Missionary: As Told in His Letters and Reminiscences W'illiam Yates lived upon and cultivated his own farm of four or five hundred acres. For nearly fifty years he was an honored deacon of Mt. Pisgah Church. Prudent, enterprising, and industrious, he was looked up to by his neighbors as one of the best farmers in that section. 11 his home was neither poverty nor riches. His was a life of labor, but it was also a life of independence. For, during the earlier years of the century, almost every thing worn or consumed by the farmer's family was produced at home. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Yates the Missionary: As Told in His Letters and Reminiscences Five hundred dollars be set aside, to be known as the Matthew T. Yates Publishing Fund, to be considered as a memorial in honor of him, and as a contribution to missions; to be used in publishing and putting on the market the life of Dr. Yates, written by Dr. Chas. E. Taylor, and that all proceeds from the sale of the book be put to the credit of this fund. We send this book on its errand of mission work, persuaded that the Southern Baptist Convention would have it done. It was written for the Foreign Mission Board, and is a labor of love. The private seal of Dr. Yates on the title page was reproduced from an old envelope, post-marked Shanghai, China, June 1, 1881, fifteen cents postage, sealed with red wax, and addressed to Rev. J. P. Boyce, D.D., Louisville, Ky., U. S. A. Dr. R. T. Bryan's account of the Jubilee services held at Shanghai, November, 1897, is added as an appendix, a fitting crown to the work so beautifully set out in this story. Seldom does a book so sweep heart and mind, its reading giving a kind of transfiguration experience. It is thrilling to think how, from its reading, missionaries will be born and how the enrichment of thought and feeling will come both in the home and in the churches. We send this book out with the conviction that God set before us this open door, and will use the effort for the furtherance of his purposes in human redemption. Nashville, Tenn., March 3, 1898. Book excerpt: "Heartbreakingly beautiful writing; sometimes funny, sometimes shattering—always revolutionary. Truly amazing collection!"--Margaret Cho "Sister Spit is like the underground railroad for burgeoning queer writers. Not only in the van, but in the audiences trapped in the hinterlands of America and looking to escape. Sister Spit saves lives."--Justin Vivian Bond, author of TANGO: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels A collection of writing and artwork from the irreverent, flagrantly queer, hilariously feminist, tough-talking, genre-busting ruffians who have toured with the legendary Sister Spit. Co-founded in 1997 by award-winning writer Michelle Tea, Sister Spit is an underground cultural institution, a gender-bending writers' cabaret that brings a changing roster of both emerging writers and some of the most important queer and counterculture artists of the day to universities, art galleries, community spaces, and other venues across the country and worldwide. Sister Spit: Writing, Rants and Reminiscence from the Road captures the provocative, politicized, and risk-taking elements that characterize the Sister Spit aesthetic, stamping the raw energy and signature style of the live show onto the page. Bratty poets and failed priestesses, punk angst and tough love, too much to drink and tattooed timelines—this anthology captures it all in a collection of poetry, personal narrative, fiction, and artwork. Featuring a who's who of queer and queer-centric writers and artists, the collection functions as a travelog, a historical document, and a yearbook from irreverent graduates of the school of hard knocks. Book excerpt: When brothers William and John Wright arrived in the United States from Ireland in 1850 and could find no other suitable employment, they joined the U.S. Army's Regiment of Mounted Rifles, which served on the Texas frontier. Their description of their experiences is unusual on several counts: it is a view of Texas in the 1850s, when personal accounts were rare, and it is written from the point of view of visitors to this nation. And because the Wrights published their book in 1857, only three years after they left the army, their story has an immediacy lacking in many memoirs. He was a man in the prime of life, tall and slender, with black plaited hair descending all the way down his back, and a countenance, whose handsome, intelligent, and dignified expression, was scarcely concealed by the red streaks of war-paint that covered it. . . . Little mercy is shown to an Indian in war, and especially by the Texan rangers, who are scarcely, if at all, advanced beyond the savage state themselves. So the prisoner was immediately tied to a tree, and a number of men were selected to shoot him. On ascertaining his fate, he instantly commenced singing his death-song . . . which vibrated like the notes of a clarion on the air of early night . . . until his voice was lost in the fatal volley, and all was over. This softcover facsimile of the Book Club of Texas's 1995 fine limited edition of 300 copies makes this classic firsthand account 04 Activeable to a broad audience for the first time since 1857. It is illustrated with wood engravings from William H. Emory's Report of the United States and Mexican Boundary Survey.
