Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1881 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. Discipline ant) JHanner. The subject of the faults of children seems to lead us on naturally to the subject of penal discipline. It is obvious that we cannot do more in these pages than touch upon the general principles which ought to govern the system of punishment, without going into any details, which must differ almost infinitely according to circumstances. Punishment is two-fold--there is the punishment which aims at the correction of the offender for his own sake, and that which aims at the prevention of wrong doing, by making the offender an example to others. It will easily be seen that the former kind is that used by Almighty God, who " chasteneth us for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness "; the latter is the method adopted by human law, which has for its object the protection of society, punishing offences, not because they are moral wrongs, but because they are injurious to the safety and welfare of the public. Now, in a family or school trained on Christian principles, both these aspects of punishment find place, and hence in the regulation of their discipline there is a special difficulty, arising from the necessity of keeping these two objects in view. In the guidance of his flock a Priest trains souls solely according to the standard of the Divine Law, irrespective of the glosses which public opinion may'put upon it, and teaches them to regard sin as an offence against the Power, the Wisdom, and the Love of God, and as a wound in the moral nature of man. The magistrate, on the other hand, has regard simply to the well-being of the community, and assigns punishment according to the harm inflicted on the public by the offence, altogether passing over the sins which only affect the offender...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Training of Children Truth should be the ground of all teachings, and surely of religious teachings. In the first place, then, since "God" is the declared standard of perfection, and "Heaven" the supreme object of human attainment, let us free both from the falsities now so widely taught; for while these are accepted as truth, how can the true get recognition? Mark how man has manufactured a God out of himself, and a Heaven from his own earthly ambitions, values, and ideas of enjoyment. The classic gods and goddesses, in their home above the sky, were simply human beings with human characteristics, good and bad, but with superhuman activities in either direction. As the word "heaven" means the high, or what is raised - from the Anglo-Saxon verb hebben, to raise - and as the sky is raised high above the earth, it is used to represent our earthly idea of utmost height. In more primitive times, when this was supposed to be a flat world with a substantial arch overhead, it was natural that superhuman creatures should be assigned that high location. We call those more primitive people pagans, but their paganism still marks our religious teachings. In these it has been represented that above the sky is a fixed locality called Heaven, having a crowned King seated on a throne with a Son on his right, and a court, so to speak, and an angel population distinct in kind from mortals, yet having mortal shape and qualities. Wings have been added as being mortally thought needful for locomotion "up there," the monstrosity of arms and wings giving way to this requirement.
