Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Moral Divorce" and Other Stories is a collection of short stories by Jacinto Octavio Picon y Bouchet (1852-1923), a member of Spain's Generation of 1868. A bibliophile and a Francophile (his mother was French); a native of Madrid who loved Paris; a member of the Royal Spanish Academy (of the Spanish language) and the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts (he published a volume of art criticism entitled the Life and Works of Don Diego Velazquez); a novelist, short story writer, and journalist; a liberal (in politics, religion, social philosophy); a Spaniard steeped in his own literature (from Cervantes to Galdos) but knowledgeable about others; an aesthete whose appreciation of French cooking prompted Emilia Pardo Bazan (probably tongue in cheek) to provide a recipe for a "Jacinto Octavio Omelette" in her Modern Spanish Cuisine; a friend of literary greats of his time (Clarin, Galdos, Palacio Valdes, Pardo Bazan, Valera, etc.); and a loving father whose son's premature death at the age of forty nearly drove him to despair, Picon deserves to be read anew, for in his stories he deals with timeless and universal themes - freedom, justice, equality, compassion, suffering, love, and hope."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book excerpt: "This translation makes available to the English-reading public another treatment of that most famous of Spanish literary creations: the Don Juan figure. This is a Don Juan in decline who will come to grips with his emptiness by learning to love. Picon's frank discussion of a description of the act of love was a daring undertaking in the Spain of the time, and perhaps led to his being dismissed - by some - as being "erotic," which was clearly meant to be pejorative. But he also introduced humor into Sweet and Delectable without taking away from the serious nature of his exploration of a love relationship, and with delightfully Cervantine chapter headings, a la Don Quixote de la Mancha, pokes fun where it needs to be poked while giving the reader a glimpse of things to come in a comic nutshell."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not easily translated, the Spanish terms cursi and cursilería refer to a cultural phenomenon widely prevalent in Spanish society since the nineteenth century. Like "kitsch," cursi evokes the idea of bad taste, but it also suggests one who has pretensions of refinement and elegance without possessing them. In The Culture of Cursilería, Noël Valis examines the social meanings of cursi, viewing it as a window into modern Spanish history and particularly into the development of middle-class culture. Valis finds evidence in literature, cultural objects, and popular customs to argue that cursilería has its roots in a sense of cultural inadequacy felt by the lower middle classes in nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Spain. The Spain of this era, popularly viewed as the European power most resistant to economic and social modernization, is characterized by Valis as suffering from nostalgia for a bygone, romanticized society that structured itself on strict class delineations. With the development of an economic middle class during the latter half of the nineteenth century, these designations began to break down, and individuals across all levels of the middle class exaggerated their own social status in an attempt to protect their cultural capital. While the resulting manifestations of cursilería were often provincial, indeed backward, the concept was—and still is—closely associated with a sense of home. Ultimately, Valis shows how cursilería embodied the disparity between old ways and new, and how in its awkward manners, airs of pretension, and graceless anxieties it represents Spain's uneasy surrender to the forces of modernity. The Culture of Cursilería will interest students and scholars of Latin America, cultural studies, Spanish literature, and modernity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book that analyzes the transnational impact of the Great War simultaneously on two countries, Spain and Argentina, that remained neutral throughout the conflict. Both countries were very relevant in the conception of propaganda and policies of belligerent countries such as France, Germany and Great Britain and showed that the conflict had a global influence and affected deeply local political and cultural processes, even in areas geographically distant from the trenches. Within this framework, this book is focused on three aspects that are analyzed dynamically throughout the whole war from a transnational perspective: neutrality as a space of dispute between pro-Allies and pro-German sectors and its relation with local politics, the debate about what positions should be assumed in order to guarantee a world without war, and the polemics on the ideas of nations and supra-nations (Hispanism, Latinism, Pan-Americanism). The conclusions of the book highlight that the radicalization that exploded in 1917 in both countries was fundamental in shaping the political radicalization of the last months of the conflict and the postwar period. As happened in Europe, the Great War did not finish in 1918 and its traces continued in the 1920s and 1930s.

Book excerpt: In an analysis based in a sophisticated use of critical theory, Fojas (Latin American and Latino studies, DePaul U., Chicago) engages a selection of modernist Latin American writers of the early 20th century as examples of cosmopolitanism, a notion here interpreted as a worldly modernity. The writings of Enrique Gomez Carrillo, Aurelia Castillo de Gonzalez (who wrote about the Chicago World's Fair), Jose Enrique Rodo, and the Venezuelan journal Cosmopolis are discussed in the context of other writers in Latin America, Europe, and the United States, and in terms of their expression of determinedly non-mainstream values, lifestyles, and ideas.
