Book Synopsis The Cure for Common Christianity by : Tommy Galloway
Download or read book The Cure for Common Christianity written by Tommy Galloway and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus stated that with faith in Him we would accomplish greater things than He. Jesus saved the lost, healed the sick, ministered to the multitudes, and raised the dead. Accordingly, the modern church should be doing much more. So what's the problem? Why do we fall short of our Savior's standard? Quite bluntly, Christianity has caught a chronic case of apathy! In The Cure for Common Christianity, using a command of theology and a unique, witty writing style, Pastor Tommy Galloway outlines the formula to alleviate this Church crisis. The problems are complex and the symptoms are multi-faceted; the cure is simple-a full-fledged return to the basics of Christianity. The world is disillusioned by the corruption and complacency plaguing our houses of worship. Christians cannot waste time. A spiritually sick world is waiting for a healthy Church to offer hope. They are waiting for - The Cure for Common Christianity. Pastor Tommy Galloway began his ministry at age sixteen. Upon completion of high school in Calhoun City, Mississippi, he attended Jackson College of Ministries and received a degree in Theology. He served as Youth Pastor in Longview, Texas, before beginning evangelistic work throughout the United States. In 1984, he married Candace Greene. They continued evangelistic work until 1988, when they were elected pastors of Powell's Grove Pentecostal Church in Jayess, Mississippi. After pastoring there for six years, they moved to Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1994, to begin evangelistic work again. In 1996, they founded Word of Life Church where they still serve as Senior Pastors. Pastor Tommy's vision is, "Lead Locally, Reach Regionally, and Grow Globally." Although pastoring the phenomenal people of Word of Life Church is his first calling, he still ministers at evangelistic crusades throughout America and other countries. Tommy and Candi have three children, Landon, Kristian, and Alexis.

Book excerpt: In Spirit and In Truth Rediscovering the Message of Jesus Two thousand years ago, a Jewish carpenter with a small band of followers introduced ideas and concepts that shook the religious world down to its very foundations. Two thousand years later, the two-billion-person, multibillion-dollar religious infrastructure it spawned impacts the entire globe, but seems to have lost touch with many of the core ideas introduced by Jesus in the days when he and his disciples walked around Galilee. This book seeks to help readers rediscover the warmth, comfort, and relevance of Jesus by encouraging its readers to take another closer look at his essential message.
Download or read book We the People written by Tommy Givens and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We the People explores John Howard Yoder’s account of peoplehood and develops an appreciative revision that considers the politics of Jesus in relation to the people of Israel. This revision articulates the theopolitical stakes in relation to the modern nation-state’s claims to peoplehood and the observable effects of its exegetical and historical moorings in self-assertion as the new and purified Israel. Tommy Givens then undertakes a critical engagement with Karl Barth’s account of God’s election and a theologically sensitive exegesis of key biblical texts in dialogue with Carl Schmitt, Jacob Taubes, and N. T. Wright.

Book Synopsis Spinoza's Religion by : Clare Carlisle
Download or read book Spinoza's Religion written by Clare Carlisle and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-07 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold reevaluation of Spinoza that reveals his powerful, inclusive vision of religion for the modern age Spinoza is widely regarded as either a God-forsaking atheist or a God-intoxicated pantheist, but Clare Carlisle says that he was neither. In Spinoza’s Religion, she sets out a bold interpretation of Spinoza through a lucid new reading of his masterpiece, the Ethics. Putting the question of religion centre-stage but refusing to convert Spinozism to Christianity, Carlisle reveals that “being in God” unites Spinoza’s metaphysics and ethics. Spinoza’s Religion unfolds a powerful, inclusive philosophical vision for the modern age—one that is grounded in a profound questioning of how to live a joyful, fully human life. Like Spinoza himself, the Ethics doesn’t fit into any ready-made religious category. But Carlisle shows how it wrestles with the question of religion in strikingly original ways, responding both critically and constructively to the diverse, broadly Christian context in which Spinoza lived and worked. Philosophy itself, as Spinoza practiced it, became a spiritual endeavor that expressed his devotion to a truthful, virtuous way of life. Offering startling new insights into Spinoza’s famously enigmatic ideas about eternal life and the intellectual love of God, Carlisle uncovers a Spinozist religion that integrates self-knowledge, desire, practice, and embodied ethical life to reach toward our “highest happiness”—to rest in God. Seen through Carlisle’s eyes, the Ethics prompts us to rethink not only Spinoza but also religion itself.

Book excerpt: "The feeling was electric-energy humming through my body. I felt like blood was pouring into areas of my tissues that it had not been able to reach for some time. It was relieving and healing, subtler than the feeling from getting off on drugs, but it was detectable and lovely, and of course, there was no hangover, just a feeling of more ease than I could remember. I felt a warmth come over me similar to what I felt when I had done heroin, but far from the darkness of that insanity, this was pure light-a way through." - Tommy Rosen, on his first yoga experience Most of us deal with addiction in some form.
