Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics, and career thought processes among college students with disabilities based on Antonovsky's conceptual framework of sense of coherence. Participants were college students with disabilities collected through the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (rcpd) at Michigan State University and other universities and colleges via a listserv of the Michigan Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (mi-ahead). Pearson Correlation Coefficient and forward stepwise regression analyses were carried out in order to find out the relationship between sense of coherence, demographic characteristics (E.G., gender, race, and socioeconomic status), and career thought processes. Results supported that college students with disabilities who showed higher sense of coherence indicated less overall dysfunctional career thoughts, career decision-making confusion, or career-related anxiety. In addition, the relationships between sense of coherence, career thoughts, and the demographic characteristics have been found. Implications for career development professionals as well as clinical considerations of caring for college students with disabilities experiencing career-related difficulties were discussed. Book excerpt: This study explored the differences between career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and perceived career barriers of students enrolled in the applied technology program compared to those enrolled in a college transfer program at a southeastern urban community college. Participants in the ex-post facto cross-sectional survey included 787 full and part-time students at the community college. There were three research questions: (1) Are there differences in mean scores of CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs by demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, first-generational, employment, full and part-time student status)? (2) What is the predictive value of these demographic variables on CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? (3) Is there a relationship between CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form and Career Barriers Inventory-Revised were administered to participants and data were analyzed using two sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression models. There were significant differences between applied technology and college transfer students in terms of perception of career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy. The applied technology students, who tended to be older, had higher career decision-making self-efficacy scores than the college transfer students and that did not change across the other demographic variables (gender, etc). The college transfer students, who tended to be younger, had higher perception of career barriers scores, and this did not change across demographic variables. Future research using a qualitat.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original research detailed in this document recognizes that the majority of students with disabilities between 18-69 years of age will attend a community college. The literature also indicates an exponential increase in job opportunities and earnings of individuals with disabilities who attain higher levels of education as compared with those who fail to attain such education. This study examined 12 predictors for transfer from the community college to a four-year institution for students with disabilities. Pre-existing data from the California Community College Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) matched with data from the National Student Clearinghouse, running from the academic year 1995-1996 until 2006-2007, were used. This resulted in a sample of 31,590 students with disabilities. Of the 4741 students with disabilities who transferred to a four-year college during that 12 year time period, the average number of years for a transfer was 5.83. A logistic regression with all 21 predictors significantly predicted transfer, x2 (21, N = 26,751) = 4918.46, _p_

This book was released on 2017 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of internalized stigma of mental illness on the career development of college students with hidden disabilities. The availability of research investigating career variables within this population is limited and is primarily focused within the vocational rehabilitation arena. Therefore, one of the goals of the current study was to link separate bodies of literature on college students with disabilities, career development, and internalized stigma of mental illness. The second goal was to examine the interaction of internalized stigma of mental illness between career decision self-efficacy and career exploration on the perceived likelihood of achieving hoped for occupational possible selves (OPS). The study included college students with hidden disabilities and investigated variables related to mental illness and career. Participants were administered a background information questionnaire, the Career Decision Self-Efficacy scale (CDSE-SF), selected subscales of the Career Exploration Survey (CES), and the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness scale (ISMI). Contrary to hypotheses, career decision making self-efficacy, career self-exploration, and internalized stigma of mental illness did not have a direct effect on the perceived likelihood of achieving hoped for OPS. However, career environment exploration did have a direct and positive association with perceived likelihood of achieving hoped for OPS. Results further indicated internalized stigma of mental illness did not moderate the effect of career decision self-efficacy and career exploration on the perceived likelihood of achieving one's hoped for occupational self. Study implications, limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: The increased number of students with disabilities in higher education promotes the need for specified career services for this population. Individuals with disabilities have historically struggled in employment settings, facing unemployment, underemployment, and wage disparities. Employees with disabilities are faced with the choice of whether or not to disclose their status to employers. A survey was designed to assess the relationship between the act of disclosing and other individual differences, such as type of disability, age at disability onset, use of informal compensatory strategies, use of formal accommodations, and work satisfaction. Disclosing disability status was found to have a significant relationship to type of disability and negative experiences in employment setting. Limitations of the investigation and implications for counselors are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationships among high academic achievement as measured by ACT scores and participation in honors and/or gifted programming, high levels of self-reported interests and skills, and dysfunctional career thoughts. Participants were 143 first and second-year undergraduate students from two southeastern US universities. Assessments included a demographic survey, the Self-Directed Search (SDS), and the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI). Results suggested a positive relationship between high academic achievement and a greater number of career options to consider pursuing. Specifically, those enrolled in gifted and/or honors programs reported significantly more interests and competencies in a number of domains based on Holland's RIASEC model. However, there was no relationship between high academic achievement or high interest and skills and dysfunctional career thoughts. In fact, non-honors students displayed significantly more decision-making confusion in comparison to those enrolled in honors programming. The findings have implications for both researchers and practitioners.
