Book excerpt: Gender inequalities perpetuated by educational and occupational segregation may be exacerbated in part by socialization processes that occur in the years leading up to when high school students typically begin considering postsecondary options. Students' feelings of self-efficacy in certain subjects can be an important factor that informs their decisions to pursue coursework and programs. This study used stereotype theory to understand how students’ perceptions of their 9th math teacher’s fairness affected their 11th grade math efficacy and how this relationship was moderated by the gender of the student and their math teacher. Using the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, linear regression models predicting students' math efficacy in 2012 indicated that students have higher levels of math efficacy when they perceive their math teachers as more fair, though this relationship was explained away by controls. An additional interaction term between student gender and math teacher gender revealed that girls’ efficacy is more strongly affected by perceptions of their male math teachers than perceptions of their female math teachers. This finding may be explained by the persistence of stereotypes around math that assume male superiority in the subject, which leads students to see their male math teachers as true authorities in math as opposed to their female math teachers.

Book excerpt: Studies have shown that girls' attitudes toward math are not as positive as that of boys (Fennema, & Sherman, 1977; Eccles, & Blumenfeld, 1985; Guimond, & Roussel, 2001). Crucially, research has also shown that this gender imbalance is a learned trait, female students in high school are more likely to have negative perceptions of Mathematics, than female students in elementary school (Spears Brown, & Bigler, 2004; Maritnot, 2012). This mixed methods research study examined the perceptions of gender bias in Grade 8 mathematics at West Rock Middle School, surveying 45 participants, (20 male, 25 female). A modified Fennema-Sherman Mathematics Attitude Scale, in combination with a Forgasz and Leder Who and Mathematics Scale, was used to uncover a slight variability in achievement and attitudinal scores between genders in a middle school mathematics class. A follow-up semi-structured interview with six students (two male, four female) determined that that variance seemed not to be due to a student perception of gender bias, but, rather, a multitude of attitudinal concerns.

Book excerpt: Mathematics is a critical filter in an increasingly technological society, but many students have an abundance of anxiety toward mathematics. Research shows that this anxiety toward mathematics or confidence in mathematics may be related to a student's gender or age in addition to a number of other factors. In order to alleviate this anxiety, or increase confidence, we need to understand the contributing factors. This study examined the mathematical confidence or anxiety of male and female students in fifth, eighth, and eleventh grade. Each student in the study completed a survey about mathematical confidence and anxiety in order to determine a score for mathematical confidence and anxiety. The survey also collected information about a student's grade, gender, and average for their mathematics class. The results of this study show that there is no significant difference in mathematics confidence or anxiety scores for the fifth or eleventh grade students or the confidence scores of the eighth grade students, but there was a significant difference in the anxiety scores of the eighth students with girls having higher anxiety toward mathematics. The results also show that gender and grade average in the current mathematics course are significant predictors for mathematics anxiety scores while only some grade averages were significant predictors for mathematics confidence scores. A student's age was not a significant predictor for either mathematical anxiety or confidence.

The results of this study indicate that impact of the proposed predictors on math anxiety vary based on gender. It further suggests that the structure and nature of this condition are different for female and male students.

Three measuring instruments were constructed to answer five research questions. These instruments included a Researcher Observation Code Sheet, an Instructor Questionnaire, and a Student Questionnaire. One of the research questions required triangulation of all three perspectives for the interactions. Participants included four mathematics instructors, 54 female students and 45 male students. Eighty-one students filled out the Student Questionnaire. The researcher coded 764 interactions. Findings showed most interactions involved instructors posing open questions to the class. Students mostly called out answers. Lower-level questions were asked the most by instructors. Male and female students responded almost equally to male and female instructor's questions. Male students received more positive responses from female instructors and females received more negative responses from male instructors. More students with male instructors weresilent in class. Female students interacted more in male taught classes and female students communicated more via questions/comments in female-taught classes. Students perceived instructors called on them by name, pointing, or eye contact. Although male students thought they had more interactions than females, male students in male-taught classes thought females had more interactions with instructors. Female instructors tended to ignore students more than male instructors. More male students thought they were ignored than females. Female students thought instructors responded to them more positively than male students did. Students also thought that male and female students interacted with questions/comments equally regardless of instructor sex. Furthermore, students reported that instructor sex did not matter. Instructors reported their interactions with students as equitable, they knew all or most of the students' names, and treated both sexes equally when responding to them. Male instructors thought female students participated more, whereas female instructors thought males did. Most instructors classified their classroom climate as warm, friendly, or laid back. Triangulation of the three different perceptions showed that in most instances, instructor-student interactions were not perceived the same. However, all three were in agreement on classroom climate.
