Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between selected academic factors and the persistence of GED recipients in community colleges in the state of Oregon. With this purpose in mind, the study addressed the following research question: Is there a relationship between selected academic variables and GED recipient persistence in community colleges? In order to address this question, enrollment and academic performance information was extracted from two existing datasets on 4,785 students who had received their GED credential in Oregon and had subsequently enrolled in one of Oregon's 17 community colleges between 2003 and 2005. Using an explanatory correlational design, frequency distributions and logistic regression analyses, the following conclusions were drawn: Students who received a GED credential in Oregon between July 2003 and June 2005 and subsequently enrolled in one of Oregon's 17 community colleges persisted in the postsecondary institution at a rate of 50% as defined by enrollment in two consecutive terms following receipt of the GED credential. Students who participated in remedial coursework during their first term persisted at higher rates than those who took no remediation. Mean standard GED score did not have a relationship to persistence. Enrollment status, as measured by the total number of credits attempted during the first term, had a positive relationship to persistence. Academic performance in a student's first term had a strong, positive relationship to persistence. Taking both these findings and the results of other related research into account, the study concluded with suggestions for practitioners to help facilitate the success of GED recipients who enrolled in community college following the receipt of their credential. These suggestions included: (a) Addressing barriers to full-time enrollment through the provision of financial incentives and the use of innovative and flexible instructional delivery methods, (b) providing purposeful and comprehensive students support services, (c) implementing a mandatory placement policy, and (d) developing bridge programs between adult education and college-level programming.

They are a resource that will be sorely needed as “boomers” reach retirement and the traditional pipeline of 17 – 23 year olds falls short of filling our growing workforce needs. Although these nontraditional students can potentially meet our future workforce demands, and although half of them enter post-secondary education, half of those who do so drop out of college for lack of basic support systems – often at the very same institutions that provided programs of retention while they were earning their GED and completing basic Adult Education classes. Yet national data collected by the National Center for Educational Statistics reveals that GED certificate holders who persist to their second year of community college studies accumulate grade point averages equal to high school graduates, refuting widely held beliefs that GED earners are not capable of rigorous academic work. This is the first book to remedy the dearth of data on this forgotten population, to present original research on these students, describing their characteristics and motivations, and to provide proven models for identifying, retaining and graduating this under-counted and underestimated cohort. Book excerpt: This interpretive study sought to understand how six GED graduates who dropped out of high school came to be enrolled at a rural community college, and what factors they perceived promoted or impeded their academic persistence and success. Specifically the study focused on student backgrounds, reasons for dropping out of high school, return motivations, and persistence factors influencing retention. Participants were selected based upon the following characteristics: 1) over the age of 21 2) enrolled both fall quarter, 1993 and winter quarter, 1994 3) studied for and took the GED at Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC) 4) received the GED after the test was revised in 1988 5) had earned at least 20 credits at YVCC by the end of fall quarter, 1993 In-depth student interviews and examination of student records provided data for the development of case records. Data analysis resulted in the generation of seven hypotheses. Among them were hypotheses that suggest that the GED was the key to accessing further education for returning adult high school dropouts, and that a primary benefit of passing the GED Tests was an increase in the self-confidence students needed to continue their education. The study also found that GED graduates recognized they may lack academic survival skills due to dropping out of high school, and that they were inclined to use college services for remediation. Four academic integration factors--the accessibility of a sequence of developmental classes, the existence of study skills or freshman orientation classes, the availability of tutoring, and supportive advising--contributed to the persistence and success of GED graduates. Two factors--the drive to become self sufficient, and the ability of students to develop a strong commitment to college through their faith in education to promote life changes--enabled students to persist and succeed. Participants provided evidence that GED graduates can succeed in community college as well as other students who have earned traditional high school degrees when certain academic conditions are in place. Finally, the study demonstrated the positive effect education can have in breaking the cycle of negative family attitudes toward schooling for the next generation.

Through a grounded theory approach, participant stories were used to capture the experiences of adults with a GED who transitioned to and were persisting in college. Research questions used to guide the study were: (1) What factors contribute to the decision of adults with a GED to enroll in community college; and (2) What factors do adults with a GED report influence their persistence in community college? Eight students participated in the study through individual interviews. Student demographic information was reviewed to develop a thorough and accurate profile of the study participants. Also, three Recruiting/Advising Specialists were interviewed to capture their perceptions on the experiences of GED graduates in transitioning to and persisting in college. This research demonstrated the positive effect education can have in the lives of the participants and their families. After having little to no previous exposure to higher education, students developed a realization that education was an imperative in order to improve their quality of life. This realization was instrumental in the decision by the study participants to pursue a GED and transition to college. Through the assistance of intrusive advising by Recruiting/Advising Specialists, students were able to successfully navigate the college system. Support during GED preparation was established in the GED classroom and continued for most students throughout their transition to college. When in college, students were comfortable developing relationships with faculty in order to have a source of academic support. Eventually students had a network of student and academic support that gave them a sense of belonging at the college.

Nationally, persistence and graduation rates have changed sparingly over the past decade (Tinto, 2006-2007). In community colleges, one-half of all new students are retained from their first to second year and graduation rates are low. In student success literature, researchers have long discussed the association between academic preparedness and success in college. In his analysis of a National Education Longitudinal Study, Bailey (2008) estimated that 60% of recent high school graduates who enter post-secondary education through the community college enroll in at least one developmental English, math, and/or reading course or more. When compared with students needing no remediation, this group of students is far less likely to persist, or to complete a college degree (Bailey, 2008). The purpose of this single institutional case study was to explore the relationship between student persistence rates and developmental education policy. Specifically, this study examined how assessment testing, placement policy, institutional practice, and initial course enrollment patterns related to student success. With the majority of students entering community colleges academically underprepared, the importance of the evaluation, as well the development of institutional policy, which may aid in increasing success rates, cannot be overstated (Price & Roberts, 2008-2009). The research methodology of this study included qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data was collected from the academic transcripts of a single cohort of all first-time, full-time, associate degree-seeking students who were enrolled at the college during the 2007 Fall semester and tracked for their persistence rates through the 2010 Spring semester. In addition, seven college professionals were interviewed and relevant documentation examined in order to perform the qualitative portion of this study. Descriptive statistics were utilized to report, summarize, and interpret the data. A Chi Square Test of Independence was employed to examine possible differences between groups as determined by selected independent and dependent variables. This mixed methods approach addressed the purpose of this study, that is, the study explored the relationship between student persistence rates and developmental education policy in terms of quantitative representation and qualitative explanation. This study provided an in-depth perspective of the history of developmental education in addition to initial placement policy and practices at the college. Throughout the interviews, two themes emerged institutional struggle with the right to fail philosophy and ambivalence towards/questioning of the validity of assessment testing instruments. The Chi Square Test indicated that there were no statistically significant differences between groups as determined by selected independent and dependent variables. Overall, the quantitative results of this research study did not support the research findings of other studies.

Book excerpt: For most high school non-completers, the GED[R] (General Educational Development) credential is the bridge to postsecondary education, but little is known about how successfully they could make that transition and whether their participation shifts across time. The American Council on Education (ACE) has begun a three-year longitudinal study to understand the effect of the GED (General Educational Development) credential on postsecondary enrollment, persistence, and completion. This study is in support of GED 20/20, a new comprehensive initiative to transition adults without a high school diploma to the GED credential and career and college readiness via accelerated learning. A first step of the study involved piloting the work with a random sample of 1,000 U.S. GED candidates in September 2008. The pilot reports the latest data available from a 2003 cohort of GED candidates who tested shortly after the introduction of the new rigorous 2002 test series. Major findings of interest in this pilot study reflect a positive relationship between the GED credential and entering postsecondary education. GED credential recipients enrolled in postsecondary education at a significantly higher rate than did non-passers. Women with a GED credential enrolled at a higher rate than male GED credential recipients. Approximately half of GED credential recipients who indicated Enter Two-Year College and Enter Four-Year College as reasons for testing enrolled in postsecondary education after testing. These comparisons suggest that GED credential recipients with the intention to enroll in a two-year or four-year college when testing are more likely to actually do so, compared with GED credential recipients who do not state these goals. Book excerpt: This study was purposed to extract, collate, and statistically format data contained in the national Beginning Postsecondary Students (BPS) Longitudinal Study: 1996-2001 database that pertained to persistence and attainment rates of GED recipients who began their postsecondary education at a community college during the 1995-96 academic year. The primary objective was to reckon the attrition rate of GED recipients during their first year of enrollment (FY 1995-96), and to measure degree or certificate attainment rates of that particular cohort of GED enrollees at the end of a 6-year study period (FY 2000-01). Several significant findings related to the academic prowess and characteristics of a cohort of GED students who enrolled in public 2-year educational institutions during the BPS:1995-96 study period are presented in this study. One of those findings is that the attrition rates of the GED recipients and the high school graduates who concurrently enrolled full-time at community colleges during the 1995-96 academic year were closely proximate by the end of their first year of enrollment (52.6% HS dropout rate versus 54.8% GED dropout rate). Another interesting finding is that accumulated GPAs of GED recipients who participated in the BPS:1996/2001 and who persisted through their first academic year as full-time enrollees in community colleges were slightly higher than their counterpart BPS:1996/2001 cohort of high school graduates who concurrently enrolled at community colleges. The statistical data reported in this study were garnered from a database administered by the US Department of Education; however, because this study presents its findings in the form of raw, unweighted data, it does not statistically reflect national representativeness.

Book excerpt: This study examined the persistence of Black and Latin@ students with a GED in a two-year institution. The intent is to better understand the experiences of GED recipients attaining an associate's degree using their interpretations. A life history method was used to collect data and a thematic analysis to organize and make meaning of the narratives. The data was then interpreted using a theoretical framework by Paulo Freire to better understand academic challenges. The intent is that practitioners, policy makers, and future researchers will be able to better make connections between experiences, demographics, and institutional characteristics instead of viewing them as isolated variables. Three students participated and provided a narrative about their educational life history leading to the completion of a General Educational Development Certificate and an associate's degree. The nine themes recognized within the challenges were: (1) family; (2) economic; (3) employment; (4) teaching Style; (5) educational environment (6) developmental education; (7) social & living conditions; (8) cancer; and (9) cultural interpretations. The ten themes stated within persistence were: (1) security/control; (2) Children; (3) teaching style; (4) resources; (5) jobs; (6) Motivating Environment; (7) bilingual; (8) sacrifice; (9) self-awareness and (10) obligation. The seven themes within advice were: (1) complete education; (2) stay focused/goal setting; (3) be vocal/ask; (4) sacrifice; (5) resources; (6) know yourself; and (7) remain positive. Many of these themes were identified as both, facilitating or mitigating academic performance. A strong relationship between themes existed within the narratives of participants. When organizing these themes, a network of influence between themes and greater social constructs is identifiable. Freire recognizes the pedagogical, cultural, and organizational influences that impede academic performance. A Freirean interpretation is identified within three categories of understanding: collaboration through dialogue, dealing with difference in diversity, or altruistic concern for others. Within these categories, students experienced a sense of inclusion and affirmation that led to persistence. The experience of exclusion and despair was experienced by all students and they considered discontinuing. If it weren't for participants sacrificing basic needs and the positive and affirming support within the institution by faculty, advisors, and support staff that increased the sense of belonging, that they were able to persist. The interconnected nature of a student, environmental factors, classroom setting, and institutional policy/practices all work to facilitate or mitigate a student's successful transition throughout college.
