Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychologist Diana Baumrind's revolutionary prototype of parenting, called authoritative parenting, combines the best of various parenting styles. In contrast to previously advocated styles involving high responsiveness and low demandingness (i.e., permissive parenting) or low responsiveness and high demandingness (i.e., authoritarian parenting), authoritative parenting involves high levels of both responsiveness and demandingness. The result is an appropriate mix of warm nurturance and firm discipline. Decades of research have supported the prototype, and we now know that authoritative parenting fosters high achievement, emotional adjustment, self-reliance, and social confidence in children and adolescents. In this book, leading scholars update our thinking about authoritative parenting and address three unresolved issues: mechanisms of the style's effectiveness, variations of effectiveness across cultures, and untangling how parents influence children from how children influence them. By integrating perspectives from developmental and clinical psychology, the book will inform prevention and intervention efforts to help parents maximise their children's potential.

This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes an international and multidisciplinary approach to understanding students’ academic achievement. It does so by integrating educational literature with developmental psychology and family studies perspectives. Each of the nine chapters focuses on a particular country: China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, or the United States. It describes the country as a cultural context, examines the current school system and parenting in light of the school system, and provides empirical evidence from that country regarding links between parenting and students’ academic achievement. The book highlights similarities and differences in education and parenting across these nine countries - all varying widely in socioeconomic and cultural factors that affect schools and families. The volume contributes to greater understanding of links between parenting and academic performance in different cultural groups. It sheds light on how school systems and parenting are embedded in larger cultural settings that have implications for students’ educational experiences and academic achievement. As two of the most important contexts in which children and adolescents spend time, understanding how schools and families jointly contribute to academic achievement holds promise for advancing the international agenda of promoting quality education for all.
Book Synopsis Cognitive and Moral Development, Academic Achievement in Adolescence by : Richard M. Lerner
Download or read book Cognitive and Moral Development, Academic Achievement in Adolescence written by Richard M. Lerner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on concepts central to the understanding of the key features of individuality which undergo significant transformations throughout the adolescent period: Personality, self, and ego. While rooted in distinct theoretical traditions, these three concepts, in combination, capture the core aspects of the formation of the individual's unique sense of self or identity, a psychosocial development fundamentally associated with adolescence. Consistent with the developmental-systems models of person-context relations at the forefront of current human development theory and research, the articles within this volume focus on the dynamic, reciprocal relations between youth and key socializing agents within their ecologies. Nevertheless, the articles represented in this volume illustrate that when attempting to understand the development of personality- and self-systems, scholars differ in the extent to which they place primary emphasis on the individual, on the context, or on the relationship between the two.
Book Synopsis Parent-adolescent Relationships by : Brian K. Barber
Download or read book Parent-adolescent Relationships written by Brian K. Barber and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ten chapters that make up this volume not only cover a broad range of key substantive issues in adolescent research (e.g., ego, development, identity formation, self-esteem, pubertal development, cognitive development, deviant behavior, religiosity, and academic achievement), but as a whole they illustrate some of the key theoretical and methodological trends occuring in parent-adolescent research. Several of the chapters consider the interface between components of the family environment (e.g., the marital and parental systems) or between the family and other social contexts (e.g., peers, school, religion). Methodologically, this set of chapters give an interesting sampling of the variability in design and data analysis used in parent-adolescent studies. Designs include both cross-sectional and longitudinal survey, observation, and case study. This volume should be useful to scholars, graduate students, and professionals interested in adolescent development and behavior in the context of the family and other social environments.

Book Synopsis The Relation of Parenting Style to Academic Achievement in Young Adults by : Stacey Pickert
Download or read book The Relation of Parenting Style to Academic Achievement in Young Adults written by Stacey Pickert and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of the relationship between parenting and child development has been of paramount interest to psychologists for decades (Hart, Olsen, Robinson, & Mandelco, 1997). Although the link between parenting style and academic achievement has been well established in regard to children and adolescents, the literature concerning young adults, of the university-aged population, is limited (Cutrona, Cole, Colangelo, Assouline, & Russell, 1994). By examining the relation of parenting style to academic achievement in young adults, and concerning both maternal and paternal parenting styles, the present study attempted to determine if Baumrind’s (1971) typology of parenting styles can be extended to include young adults. After surveying 397 university students, findings revealed that correlations between parenting style and academic achievement in young adults were insignificant. Further, although multiple regression analyses revealed that parenting style significantly contributed to the prediction of academic achievement, relatively low estimates of the proportion of variance accounted for by the regression suggest that such a contribution and difference between those who live with their parents and those who do not are barely noteworthy. Implications concerning the latent effects of parenting on academic achievement are presented; however, as the results of the present study are inconsistent with previous findings concerning children and adolescents (Baumrind, 1968; Dornbusch, Ritter, Liederman, Roberts, & Fraleigh, 1987; Slicker, 1998), limitations and methodological issues are discussed, as well as recommendations for future research.
