Many factors contribute to this depression. The purpose of conducting this research was to determine which of four predictors, a lack of hope, previous negative life events, loneliness, or daily stress leads most to the depression found among these students. I hypothesized that a lack of hope would contribute most to college student depression and that previous negative life events, loneliness, and daily stress would follow, in this order, as predictors for the high rates of depression found among these students. The results of this study indicate daily stress to be the most significant predictor of college student depression, followed by loneliness and a lack of hope. The variable previous negative life events did not significantly predict college student depression. The findings of this research indicate the importance of incorporating programs to ease the stress that many college students experience every day. Establishing such programs may finally reduce the high levels of depression found on college campuses.

Book excerpt: Stress is a widespread concept commonly associated with psychological and medical problems that may impair an individual's functioning and incur costs on society. Alarming rates of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and other stress-related problems have been found among college students. This study argues that reducing emotional and financial stress-related costs may be possible through increasing public and professional awareness of moderating variables, such as social support and coping resources. 241 college students completed measures about perceived stress, life events, satisfaction with social support, coping strategies, and psychological functioning. Results from correlational, regression, and structural equation modeling procedures indicated that stress, inadequate social support, and escape-avoidance coping were related to higher levels of depression and lower life satisfaction in both males and females. Social support functioned as a moderator of stress in determining negative outcomes, primarily during high stress. Specifically, the interaction between stress and social support predicted depression in the combined sample, anxiety in males, and life satisfaction in females. In addition, the present study highlights the importance of accounting for gender in research concerning stress, social support, coping, and outcomes. Finally, limitations and suggestions for future research will be discussed.

Book excerpt: Suicide is a national problem and is the second leading cause of death among college students. The concern, however, does not rest solely for those students who seriously consider suicide, but also for those who struggle with distress and do not seek help. Scholars have called for suicide prevention efforts to take a population-based intervention approach, as the majority of campus counseling centers are under-resourced and overwhelmed with demand. Increasing connectedness on college campuses has been considered a key strategy for suicide prevention, as connectedness is linked to health and wellbeing and is also theorized to play an important role in preventing the desire for death. However, little is known about how connectedness manifests for college students and the ways in which connectedness is related to distress and suicidal thoughts. The current exploratory study builds upon existing research by examining the relationship between connectedness, distress, and suicidal thinking. More specifically, the study examines the extent to which connectedness protects students against the development of distress and suicidal thoughts. Moreover, it examines the relationship between gender, sexual orientation, and membership in student groups with connectedness, distress, and suicidal thoughts. This information contributes to a fuller understanding of the factors that may protect people from suicidal thoughts and improve campus suicide prevention efforts, with the aim of bolstering the mental health of the college community. The study uses archival data from a national survey of college student coping collected in 2011 by The National Research Consortium of Counseling Centers in Higher Education. Multiple and logistic regression were used to explore relationships between historical and demographic predictors, self-reported connectedness, distress, and suicidal thoughts during a stressful period. Results indicated that connectedness was negatively related to distress and suicidal thinking. Females endorsed lower connectedness and higher distress than males. Non-heterosexual students endorsed lower connectedness, higher distress, and higher odds of suicidal thinking compared to heterosexual students. Membership in student groups was related to higher connectedness and lower distress, differences were found in the types of groups of which students were members. Implications for population level campus interventions are discussed.

Book excerpt: College aged students have one of the highest rates of suicidality, however, research on suicidality often negates the experiences of college students of color. The sample included 122,465 college students of color and explored the relationship between suicidality and variables such as academic distress, clinician initial assessment of suicidality, current financial status, family distress, family support, outcome suicide self-report, distress index at the start and end of treatment, past financial status, prior mental health hospitalization, social support, suicide attempt and initial self-report of suicide. Data analysis included chi square, t tests, binary logistic regression and wilcox signed ranks test. The results indicated that there was a relationship between prior hospitalization for mental health and suicidality at the start of treatment. However, there was no effect of prior hospitalization and client report of suicidal ideation in the past two weeks. The results also revealed that there exists a relationship between academic distress, family distress, substance use and overall psychological distress and having made a suicide attempt in the past year. The study also revealed a relationship between family support and current financial status on suicidality but no such relationship between social support and past financial status among college students of color. Finally, the study found that clinician endorsement of suicide as a primary presenting concern had no effect on treatment outcomes. suicidality and overall distress decreased for all clients despite clinician endorsement. An exploration of study findings, limitations and implications for the field are discussed.

Reviews of 36 different university counseling centers indicated an overall increase in risk factors associated with depression and suicidal ideation among college students, including anxiety, eating disorders, fear, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, hostility, and anger (Potter, Silverman, Connorton, & Posner, 2004). Currently, resources provided by university systems to address the increasing prevalence of suicidal ideation and depression symptoms among undergraduate college student population are limited (Potter et al., 2004). The Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 2009) projections predict depression to be the second most prevalent disease burden in the world within the next six years. In order to combat the increasing prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation among undergraduate college students (Pedersen, & Paves, 2014), I suggest universities address the barriers to treatment students face, including negative social stigmas (Ohayon, & Roberts, 2014), availability of mental health care and health care professionals (Potter et al., 2004), as well as implementation of screening measures (Potter et al., 2004). Some may argue that increasing efforts and resources for screening and treatment of depression and suicidal ideation may cost universities' money, but providing preventative care through decreasing stigma, increasing screening efforts, and increasing availability of mental health care to the undergraduate student population I believe the quality of life for the student body will increase, and likeliness of depression and suicide will decrease . I trust most will agree that saving lives and improving psychological well being in undergraduate college students is invaluable.

Book excerpt: Stakeholders in college student mental health have called for a shift in focus from disease to wellness. In response, researchers have increasingly explored factors that foster and maintain mental health among this population (National Research Council and Institute of Medicine, 2009). One such germane factor is posttraumatic growth (PTG). Researchers in this domain posit that individuals can endure a subjectively traumatic experience, cope successfully with the effects of that trauma, and thereby function better than before the trauma. Researchers have acknowledged the sociocultural relativism of existing measures of PTG, suggesting differential growth potential among diverse populations and unidentified domains may exist. While a burgeoning area of research, existing knowledge of PTG indicates that college life may be characterized by optimized potential for growth (Meyerson, Grant, Carter, & Kilmer, 2011). Moreover, researchers have suggested PTG may relate positively to outcomes including perceived comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness of life; accessing social support and helpers; and appreciation for life (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1995). Suicidality (i.e., morbid rumination, active suicidal thoughts, suicidal plans, and behaviors) at varying levels of severity may impact growth potential among the college student population. Suicide is considered the third leading cause of death among individuals 24 years and younger, and it is the second leading cause of death among college students (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2009; Suicide Prevention Resource Center, 2004). Further, Drum, Brownson, Burton Denmark, and Smith (2009) asserted a greater prevalence of suicidal ideation among college students than once believed. Data suggest that over half of students experience some level of suicidal ideation in their lifetime. The proposed study aims to address persistent gaps in the literature through qualitative and quantitative analysis of cross-sectional data collected in 2011 by the National Research Consortium of Counseling Centers in Higher Education. Data were collected from college students across 74 national institutions. The prevalence of perceived PTG will be determined, and domains of PTG will be identified. The relationship among demographic variables, suicidality, and PTG will be tested to ascertain each independent variable's effect on the likelihood of endorsing overall PTG as well as PTG in each domain.

University suicide prevention efforts have focused heavily on risk factors. However, these methods concentrate on maladaptive and pathologizing principles of suicidality which may neglect individual strengths that serve as safeguards against suicide. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating role of perceived social support on the relationship between dispositional optimism and suicide ideation in college students. The primary hypothesis of this study posits that dispositional optimism will be associated with of higher levels of perceived social support, which in turn will be associated with of lower levels of suicide ideation. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that perceived social support will mediate the relationships of hope and suicide ideation perceived burdensomeness and suicide ideation, and thwarted belongingness and suicide ideation. Results of this study found that perceived social support partially mediated the relationships between dispositional optimism and suicide ideation, hope and suicide ideation, perceived burdensomeness and suicide ideation, and thwarted belongingness and suicide ideation.
