Book excerpt: Enhancing Performance: A Best Practices Guide for Innovations in Community Colleges is a collection of essays from community college leaders across the country addressing challenges facing today’s community colleges and providing practical, successful solutions their institutions have implemented. Some of the essays address foundational issues, including the role of innovation, strategic enrollment management, and campus safety strategies on the future of community colleges. In the essays, leaders suggest ways campuses can create opportunities for intentional student-faculty connections, provide revitalized advising services, and support the needs of marginalized student populations. The essays also address the role of community colleges in promoting civic engagement, responding to community crises, and addressing critical need. Each essay challenges us to delve deeper into the issues and find workable solutions. The essay authors are community college leaders who are alumni, faculty, or advisory board members in the doctoral program in Community College Leadership (DCCL Program) at Ferris State University (Michigan).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a project on the status of African-Americans that was initiated by the William Monroe Institute for the Study of Black Culture at the University of Massachusetts at Boston, this volume takes a comprehensive look at the education of African-Americans, specifically early childhood through postsecondary education, and relevant public policy issues since 1940. The list of contributors to the study includes both white and black scholars who are affiliated with primarily urban institutions located in the Northwest, the South, and on the East Coast who are deeply committed to educational research. By focusing on the known status of the education of African-Americans to date and the additional factors which need to be considered in order to develop appropriate educational strategies, these essays evaluate current programs and provide recommendations for public policy improvements. Each essay addresses some aspect of the history of the education of African-Americans or the effectiveness of pertinent laws and policies enacted within the past fifty years. Trends in the educational advancement of Blacks are clearly defined with particular focus on the forecasting of circumstances that could affect future progress. Topics ranging from counseling and guidance of minority children to the need for more Black teachers and the continuing struggle with racial violence on campus, demonstrate the broad scope of this volume. Suggestions for further reading on a specific topic appear in the list of references at the end of each chapter.

Book excerpt: This transcendental phenomenological study examined how Black fathers' perception of their own and their father's fatherhood impacts persistence in community college. This study interviewed six Black male community college students with children in New York State. The study posed three research questions: (1) How do Black male college students experience fatherhood (from a son's perspective) facilitating or impeding community college completion? (2) How do Black male college students experience their fatherhood (from a father's perspective) facilitating or impeding community college completion? and (3) In the experience of Black male college students, how do community colleges support Black students who are fathers? Findings show that fatherhood acts as a catalyst to community college completion for Black student-fathers, that children are a central motivation for persistence for Black student-fathers, and support systems in community colleges are lacking for Black student-fathers. The six emergent themes included parenting matters, impenetrable lifelong connections, resilience and progression, desire to be living proof, typical unnecessary obstacles, and true knowledge and acceptance. Recommendations for practice include recognizing Black student-fathers, implementing support programs specific to Black student-fathers, and actively recruiting Black male faculty and support staff. Recommendations for future research include broadening research nationally, including 4-year institutions, and examining student-fathers of different races.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title is only available as a loose-leaf version with Pearson eText. Applying Educational Research focuses on relating research to practice, helping educators see the relevance of research to their daily work. This goal of making research relevant is accomplished by focusing on current "problems of practice." Each chapter highlights a set of important issues for teachers, students, and schools--issues like teacher evaluation, the effectiveness of close-reading strategies, and the use of computer-supported instruction. The research examples and articles in the chapter then address these issues, providing students a meaningful context for the information they are learning about research methods. Through this approach, students learn about the research process and current research on topics that directly impact practice. From reviews of the text: The writing style of the textbook is excellent . . . . Writing clarity for content builds from one paragraph to another. . . . The Gall, Gall, and Borg textbook is the only text I would consider for [my Master's-level research course]. Because the authors are scholars and practitioners, they bring a depth and range to the topic of educational research that is unsurpassed." --Vikki K. Collins, Troy University "The writing style is very clear. I find it easy to read and navigate among the chapters. Most graduate students in my class will not have any problems reading the book. The authors provide a very gentle introduction to educational research. . . . The authors adopt a balanced view of educational research. . . . They have explained most of the quantitative analyses used in educational research, and they have explicated the major theories of qualitative research. They have introduced the research techniques in a clear manner accessible to a broad audience inside and outside of the education field." --Xiaofeng Steven Lui, University of South Carolina 0133831574 / 9780133831573 Applying Educational Research: How to Read, Do, and Use Research to Solve Problems of Practice, Loose-Leaf Version with Video-Enhanced Pearson eText -- Access Card Package Package consists of: 0132868636 / 9780132868631 Applying Educational Research: How To Read, Do, and Use Research To Solve Problems of Practice, Loose-Leaf Version 0133398811 / 9780133398816 Applying Educational Research: How To Read, Do, and Use Research To Solve Problems of Practice, Pearson eText -- Access Card

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will the United States have an educational caste system in 2030? Drawing on both extensive demographic data and compelling case studies, this powerful book reveals the depths of the educational crisis looming for Latino students, the nation’s largest and most rapidly growing minority group.Richly informative and accessibly written, The Latino Education Crisis describes the cumulative disadvantages faced by too many children in the complex American school systems, where one in five students is Latino. Many live in poor and dangerous neighborhoods, attend impoverished and underachieving schools, and are raised by parents who speak little English and are the least educated of any ethnic group. The effects for the families, the community, and the nation are sobering. Latino children are behind on academic measures by the time they enter kindergarten. And while immigrant drive propels some to success, most never catch up. Many drop out of high school and those who do go on to college—often ill prepared and overworked—seldom finish.Revealing and disturbing, The Latino Education Crisis is a call to action and will be essential reading for everyone involved in planning the future of American schools.

Book excerpt: Engineering skills and knowledge are foundational to technological innovation and development that drive long-term economic growth and help solve societal challenges. Therefore, to ensure national competitiveness and quality of life it is important to understand and to continuously adapt and improve the educational and career pathways of engineers in the United States. To gather this understanding it is necessary to study the people with the engineering skills and knowledge as well as the evolving system of institutions, policies, markets, people, and other resources that together prepare, deploy, and replenish the nation's engineering workforce. This report explores the characteristics and career choices of engineering graduates, particularly those with a BS or MS degree, who constitute the vast majority of degreed engineers, as well as the characteristics of those with non-engineering degrees who are employed as engineers in the United States. It provides insight into their educational and career pathways and related decision making, the forces that influence their decisions, and the implications for major elements of engineering education-to-workforce pathways.
