This book was released on 2006 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship of three factors (White racial identity development, religious identity development, and social desirability attitudes) with self-reported levels of multicultural counseling competency in White, master's level counselor trainees in the Midwest Region of the American Counseling Association. The results were generally consistent with previous research. The more sophisticated statuses of White racial identity development generally correlated with higher levels of multicultural counseling competency and social desirable responding. An expectation of this study based upon previous research was that as the statuses matured the levels of socially desirable responding would be lower which was not the case. Religious identity was examined through the Experiential/Rational Religious Identity development model and the associated instrument (Religious Identity Development Scale) which have been recently developed. Based upon the data there appears to be an association between less sophisticated Religious identity development statuses, social desirable responding, and multicultural counseling competency. This is the first study to date that has examined the relationships between religious identity development and multicultural counseling competency.
Book Synopsis Whiteness and White Privilege in Psychotherapy by : Andrea Dottolo
Download or read book Whiteness and White Privilege in Psychotherapy written by Andrea Dottolo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unprecedented, interdisciplinary collection focuses on gender, whiteness, and white privilege, and sheds light on this understudied subject matter in the context of clinical psychology, in both theories and applications. Psychologists, especially therapists, are often trained to look for issues that are not readily visible, cannot be spoken, and that are commonly taken for granted. Feminist and multi-cultural researchers and practitioners further seek to expose the power structures that benefit them or that unfairly advantage some groups over others. Whiteness has been investigated by sociologists and critical race theorists, but has been largely overlooked by psychologists and psychotherapists, even those who deal with feminist and multi-cultural issues. This volume explores the ways in which gender, whiteness and white privilege intersect in the therapy room, bringing to light that which is often unseen and, thus, unnamed, while examining issues of epistemology, theory, supervision, and practice in feminist therapies. The various contributions encompass theory, history, empirical research, personal reflections, and practical teaching strategies for the classroom. The authors remind us that whiteness and other forms of privilege are situated among multiple other forces, structures, identities, and experiences, and cannot be examined alone, without context. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women & Therapy.

Book Synopsis Racial Identity Theory by : Chalmer E. Thompson
Download or read book Racial Identity Theory written by Chalmer E. Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Racial identity theories have been in the psychological literature for nearly thirty years. Unlike most references to racial identity, however, Thompson and Carter demonstrate the value of integrating RACE and IDENTITY as systematic components of human functioning. The editors and their contributors show how the infusion of racial identity theory with other psychological models can successfully yield more holistic considerations of client functioning and well-being. Fully respecting the mutual influence of personal and environmental factors to explanations of individual and group functioning, they apply complex theoretical notions to real-life cases in psychological practice. These authors contend that race is a pervasive and formidable force in society that affects the development and functioning of individuals and groups. In a recursive fashion, individuals and groups influence and, indeed, nurture the notion of race and societal racism. Arguing that mental health practitioners are in key, influential positions to pierce this cycle, the authors provide evidence of how meaningful change can occur when racial identity theory is integrated into interventions that attempt to diminish the distress people experience in their lives. The interventions illustrated in this volume are applied in various contexts, including psychotherapy and counseling, supervision, family therapy, support groups, and organizational and institutional environments. This book can serve the needs and interests of advanced-level students and professionals in all mental health fields, as well as researchers and scholars in such disciplines as organizational management and forensic psychology. It can also be of value to anyone interested in the systematic implementation of strategies to overcome problems of race.
Book Synopsis The Influence of Race and Racial Identity in Psychotherapy by : Robert T. Carter
Download or read book The Influence of Race and Racial Identity in Psychotherapy written by Robert T. Carter and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1995 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolutionary theory, a clinical watershed, a masterful text The Influence of Race and Racial Identity in Psychotherapy, Robert T. Carter changes the course of a century of psychological theory, practice, and education. He debunks the traditional belief that race has a marginal impact on personality development and, with compelling empirical evidence, demonstrates that race is the defining factor above other experiences of living in the United States and a crucial ingredient in the therapeutic process. Carter presents models of racial identity for all racial groups and offers numerous case studies of various psychosocial resolutions within racial groups. He constructs the first racially inclusive model of psychotherapy--a rigorous conceptual framework that affords clinicians a deeper awareness of how racial issues affect their dealings with patients--and creates a means of integrating that knowledge into their practices. The Influence of Race and Racial Identity in Psychotherapy: * Defines the decisive role of racial identity in personality development * Presents a racially inclusive model of psychotherapy * Describes how this model is applied in a clinical context * Proposes new counselor training programs based on this model. This immensely valuable text helps students in multicultural counseling and psychotherapy develop an awareness of their own levels of racial identity as well as those of their patients. For practicing therapists, it opens new vistas in the therapeutic process and provides new avenues through which to better understand and serve their patients.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, scholars have become more vocal regarding counselors and counseling psychologists responsibilities to advance efforts for social change . As a result, empirical investigations have started to evaluate variables that may contribute to trainees and mental health professionals desire to participate in social justice advocacy. However, most of these studies do not focus on trainees and mental health professionals who identify as White. The present study used quantitative analyses to explore nine hypotheses regarding the relationship between social justice, White racial identity, and multicultural competency among White master level trainees. Trainees who participated in this study were recruited from master level programs in counseling psychology or counselor education at a large Midwestern University. A total of 208 surveys were used in the analyses of this research design. The measures used include the Social Justice Advocacy Scale, the Oklahoma Racial Attitudes Scale-Revised, the Multicultural Counseling Knowledge and Awareness Scale, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale. Statistically significant results were found on six of the nine research questions. Major findings suggest that advanced multicultural training, knowledge about diversity and multicultural issues, and White racial attitude orientation have statistically significant effects on White master level trainees interest in social justice advocacy. The results of this study, limitations, and recommendations for future research are discussed.
Book Synopsis Racial Identity and Self-reflection by : Bianka N. Hardin
Download or read book Racial Identity and Self-reflection written by Bianka N. Hardin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author reviews and summarizes the social and historical biases of beliefs about issues of race and culture in psychology. This dissertation addresses: multiculturalism in psychology, models of cultural competence, Whiteness and White Privilege, racial identity models, White racial identity, and racism and the therapeutic relationship. This paper proposes the development and piloting of a White racial identity-training workshop that will assist White doctoral level graduate students in examining their racial identity and its impact on therapeutic relationships. The workshop's intended focus is the exploration of racial identity issues as they relate to cultural competence. Three workshops were facilitated that contained a total of 23 participants. Results from this study demonstrate the importance of a therapist's continued examination of racial identity issues. Results suggest that participation in a White racial identity workshop increases knowledge of issues related to racial identity. Most participants rated self-examination and a therapist's understanding of racial identity as being extremely important and indicated that they would encourage other White therapists to participate in a similar workshop on White racial identity. Challenges and important considerations in facilitating a White racial identity workshop are also discussed.

This study examines the processes that contribute to racism, racist attitudes, racial identity development and race salience within cross-racial counseling relationships. Book Synopsis Multicultural Counseling Competencies by : Derald Wing Sue
Download or read book Multicultural Counseling Competencies written by Derald Wing Sue and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1998-02-12 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multicultural Counseling Competencies is a state-of-the-art book integrating the literature and work on multicultural counseling competencies. It draws out implications for individual, professional, and institutional development by identifying the characteristics related to culturally competent mental health care. As such, it has relevance for practitioners who will increasingly encounter client populations who differ from them in terms of race, culture, and ethnicity; it suggests how the mental health profession needs to alter its practices to fit the needs of the culturally different in our society; and it advocates changes in mental health policy, programs, and organization. In a very systematic manner, the text provides a working definition of "multiculturalism" from which counselors, therapists, and social workers can ground their awareness, knowledge, and skills. It presents a new concept called "ethnocentric monoculturalism" and traces how it has inundated our society and the mental health professions. Written by leaders in the field of multicultural counseling, Multicultural Counseling Competencies is a landmark volume in clinical and counseling psychology, educational psychology, gender studies, nursing, social work, psychology, health services, interpersonal violence, and ethnic studies.
