Book excerpt: Many policymakers seek to improve mathematics proficiency and to reduce achievement gaps across ethnic groups in the United States. This study examines the relationship between parental involvement, self-efficacy, and mathematics achievement in middle school within a multiethnic school district in the United States Midwest region. A total of 454 students participated in a survey over the course of a school year. The survey was meant to investigate the interaction and perceptions of parental involvement, self-efficacy, and school achievement within the school's system across the various ethnic groups. I used Pearson correlations to analyze the data to determine if a statistically significant relationship exists between parental involvement and mathematics achievement, parental involvement and self-efficacy, and self-efficacy and mathematics achievement. Similarly, descriptive statistics and ANOVA were utilized to analyze student perceptions of these variables and differences across ethnic groups. Findings indicate that a significant relationship exists between parental involvement and self-efficacy. Similarly, a significant relationship exists between self-efficacy and mathematics achievement. However, no significant relationship exists between parental involvement and mathematics achievement. Results also showed that White students demonstrated the highest level of mathematics performance, while Black students demonstrated the least level of mathematics performance. Meanwhile, Black students showed the highest parental involvement perceptions while Multiethnic students expressed the lowest parental involvement perception. The students' perception of self-efficacy was low across the ethnic groups.

Book excerpt: Educators across the United States have searched for avenues to improve students' mathematics achievement since the publication of A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983) which reported that American students were behind students in other countries academically. Recent legislation, No Child Left Behind (2001), continues to address the need for improvement in mathematics among K-12 students. A possible intervention in middle school is to incorporate parental involvement. Numerous researchers (Colombo, 2006; Desimone, 1999; Epstein, 2008; Flynn, 2006; Henderson & Berla, 1994; Sheldon & Epstein, 2005; Wherry, 2006) have demonstrated the positive outcomes of parental involvement on children's education. This construct was investigated by analyzing the effects of math workshops for parents of eighth grade students on student math achievement and anxiety levels. Two theories form the foundation for the study: (a) Epstein's (1987) Theory of Overlapping Spheres which describes the behavioral practices of parental involvement and (b) Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler's (1995, 1997) Model of Parental Involvement, which is based on psychosocial constructs that affect the relationship between parental involvement and students' successes. A Nonequivalent Control-Group design and a Static-Group Comparison Design were used in the study with a sample of 105 eighth grade math students and their parents. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted for hypothesis one and a Two-Sample t-test was employed for hypothesis two. These statistical measures revealed no significant difference between eighth grade students' math achievement and math anxiety levels for students whose parents attended math workshops, and those students whose parents did not attend math workshops.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore principal perceptions regarding parental involvement opportunities and the potential impact these opportunities have on student academic achievement at the middle school level. Data were collected from 82 principals/assistant principals across the state of Pennsylvania utilizing a survey instrument and personal interviews from 10 respondents. As self-reported, participants were divided into two groups: those from middle schools that made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) based upon the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) scores for the 2011-2012 school year (n=47) and those from middle schools that did not meet the requirements for Adequate Yearly Progress (n=35). Participant responses concluded that a variety of parental involvement opportunities are afforded to the parents within the middle schools represented in this study. Further results of this study indicated that more middle school principals/assistant principals from schools that did not make AYP perceived parental involvement to be "Extremely Important" as compared to those participants from schools that made AYP. Vast majority of the participants from both groups perceived parental involvement as having a positive benefit to student academic achievement.

High-achieving children and their parents often encounter difficulties accessing challenging material in their classrooms or accessing teachers with appropriate knowledge of how to guide their education. One solution is to increase parental involvement by better understanding the relationship between academic achievement and parental involvement for high-achieving students. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine the relationship between parental involvement and academic achievement for high-achieving middle school students. Epstein's six dimensions of parental involvement provided a conceptual structure for this study. Fifty-eight parent-student dyads in Michigan were surveyed for academic achievement and levels and types of parental involvement. Relationships were explored between academic achievement and parental involvement using ANOVA and Pearson correlation statistical analyses. The first key finding was that no significant relationship was found between parental involvement, as perceived by either student or parent, and any measure of academic achievement. The second key finding was a significant relationship between parental involvement, ethnicity, parental educational attainment, and household income. Parental involvement increased with household income and parental education attainment, and decreased for non-White households. The third key finding was that no significant benefit was found for homeschooling despite the higher parental involvement for these students. The work concludes with specific recommendations for improving the academic achievement of high-achieving students based on these three key findings.

The current study will explore the relationship between low-income parents’ perceptions of their school involvement and their students’ Lexile levels and attendance at a Title I middle school to ensure low-income students have the greatest chance of overcoming the implications of living in poverty. This study is unique because it investigates the perceptions of parents, rather than parent involvement as in previous studies. The researcher will use a Likert scale survey to survey low-income parents of students who attend Susie Dasher Middle School (pseudonym).

The NELS:88 is being conducted in several waves, beginning with a base year experience of approximately 25,000 eighth graders. This report profiles the family characteristics and the level of involvement reported by the parents of 1988 eighth graders, using the base year survey and dropout data from the first follow-up. About 93 percent of the parents of the first year sample were interviewed to provide information about home life and family experiences. The parent component is not, however, a representative sample of eighth graders' parents. Their inclusion is linked to the student participants. This study examined child-directed involvement, including activities such as parent-child discussions and school-directed involvement such as parent-teacher association membership and volunteering in the school. There was some indication that parent involvement was related to whether or not students scored below the basic level in reading or mathematics proficiency, but there was a strong relationship between parent involvement and whether or not a student dropped out of school between the 8th and 10th grades. What changes occur in students' test scores and overall grades when a variety of parental contacts are made over a six-week period? 2. How can I promote parental involvement? 3. What can I do to educate parents on how to become more effectively involved in their child's education? To answer these questions I selected ten parents, whose children were currently receiving grades below a 69% in 7th grade mathematics and who have not contacted me after the first nine weeks of the semester. I used three different methods to contact the parents, phones call, emails, and notes in students' planners. All three methods showed a lack of parental feedback and involvement. Nevertheless, five students showed an increase in the second marking period, four showed a decrease, and one stayed the same.
