Book excerpt: This thesis explores perfectionism in Anorexia Nervosa (AN) using a series of discrete but inter-related studies: Study 1: A pilot study of a group intervention targeting perfectionism in adults with AN (N=21). Reductions in self-reported perfectionism were observed between pre- and post-intervention. Study 2: A systematic review and meta-analysis of interventions targeting perfectionism. Support was found for the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy in reducing perfectionism and psychopathology. Study 3: An investigation of performance based perfectionism in participants with AN (N=81) compared with healthy controls (HC; N=72). Evidence was found for elevated performance based and cognitive aspects of perfectionism in the AN group. Study 4: An investigation of associations between perfectionism and cognitive style (rigidity, attention to detail) using self-report and behavioural measures in adults and adolescents with AN (N=82) and HCs (N=84). Strong associations were found between perfectionism and self-reported cognitive style but not between perfectionism and performance on tasks of set-shifting and central coherence. Study 5: An investigation of self-reported and performance based perfectionism in unaffected AN mothers (N=21) compared with HC mothers (N=20). AN mothers did not differ from HC mothers on performance based or self-reported perfectionism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of eating disorders has improved markedly over the past 10 years since the publication of the previous edition of this volume. Early intervention is the key, as body dissatisfaction, obsession with thinness, and restrained and binge eating can be found in those as young as ten. Exploring prevention methods and therapeutic options, the second edition of Eating Disorders in Women and Children: Prevention, Stress Management, and Treatment is updated with new research on these devastating maladies. Highlights in the second edition include: An emphasis on the physiology of eating disorders and genetic factors related to anorexia and bulimia Theories on prevention and the identification of at-risk individuals The latest information on therapeutic modalities, including cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, constructionist, and narrative approaches as well as pharmaceutical management Nutritional evaluation and treatment Specific exercise recommendations for women and children with eating disorders An accompanying CD-ROM containing a PowerPoint® presentation for each chapter With contributions from acclaimed clinicians widely known for their work with the eating disorder population, this volume recognizes the multifaceted nature of these disorders, addresses the widening demographic range of those afflicted, and delves into the issues behind their development. It provides practical recommendations for treatment from many perspectives, presenting enormous hope for people who painfully struggle with these disorders. In addition, it explores critical measures that can be taken to help the larger population understand and work to prevent eating disorders in their communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between perfectionism and outcome in anorexia nervosa. Participants completed the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) at admission to (n = 55), discharge from (n = 27), and at 6-24 month follow-up (n = 49) after inpatient treatment. At follow-up, participants also completed the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS). The results suggested that lower EDI perfectionism at pre-treatment was associated with a better response to treatment, which was associated with better outcome at follow-up. Both the good and poor outcome groups had significantly higher MPS total perfectionism scores than healthy controls at follow-up. The EDI appears to measure an aspect of perfectionism that is sensitive to illness status, while the MPS appears to be less dependent on clinical state, and may reflect a common personality trait that persists with remission. Attrition rates and the relatively small sample size may have biased the results of the study and limited the generalizability of the findings.

Book excerpt: Grounded in decades of influential research, this book thoroughly examines perfectionism: how it develops, its underlying mechanisms and psychological costs, and how to target it effectively in psychotherapy. The authors describe how perfectionistic tendencies--rooted in early relational and developmental experiences--make people vulnerable to a wide range of clinical problems. They present an integrative treatment approach and demonstrate ways to tailor interventions to the needs of individual clients. A group treatment model is also detailed. State-of-the-art assessment tools are discussed (and provided at the companion website). Throughout the book, vivid clinical illustrations make the core ideas and techniques concrete.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation examined multidimensional perfectionism, shame and maltreatment in 45 women with bulimia nervosa, 14 women with binge eating disorder and 26 women with anorexia nervosa, purging type, all of whom suffered from comorbid substance use disorders. Participants completed three perfectionism scales, one shame scale and one maltreatment scale. Results revealed that in the bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder group, perfectionistic self-promotion and bodily shame were significant predictors of eating disorder severity while other-oriented perfectionism was a significant predictor of alcohol use severity. In the anorexia group, other-oriented perfectionism and bodily shame were significant predictors of eating disorder severity and nondisplay of imperfection was a significant predictor of drug use severity. All participants experienced elevated levels on all types of shame and maltreatment and on most perfectionism dimensions compared to normative samples. Findings should be utilized in developing treatment programs for those with comorbid eating and substance use disorders.

Book excerpt: This volume combines empirical research-based and theoretical perspectives on shame in cultural contexts and from socio-culturally different perspectives, providing new insights and a more comprehensive cultural base for contemporary research and practice in the context of shame. It examines shame from a positive psychology perspective, from the angle of defining the concept as a psychological and cultural construct, and with regard to practical perspectives on shame across cultures. The volume provides sound foundations for researchers and practitioners to develop new models, therapies and counseling practices to redefine and re-frame shame in a way that leads to strength, resilience and empowerment of the individual.
