Book excerpt: This dissertation investigated relationships between school climate, social emotional learning (SEL) and racial equity in academic outcomes to understand the role that school climate and SEL can play in the promotion of racially equitable academic outcomes. The setting of the study was the Seattle Public Schools (SPS), a racially diverse school district serving over 50,000 students. All students in grades 3-12 are invited to complete a survey each Spring that covers school climate and SEL. The present study found the student survey to be a reliable measure of student perceptions of school climate and student self-reported SEL, which, after some adjustment, was invariant to race, gender, and home language. This study found that Multiracial students reported significantly less positive perceived school climate, while Asian and Latinx students reported slightly more positive perceived school climate compared to White students. All racial groups of color reported lower levels of self-reported SEL compared to their White peers. School climate did not account for race differences in self-reported grades. SEL accounted for a statistically significant, but small portion of race differences in grades. The strength of the association between SEL and grades was not as strong for Black, Native, Asian, and Multiracial students compared to Whites. Perceptions of school climate were positively associated with grades for all racial groups, although the association was less strong for Asian students. Finally, schools with more positive school climates experienced smaller race differences in student self-reported grades. The moderating effect of school climate on race differences in grades remained after accounting for the poverty level of the school and students' own perceptions of climate at their school. This moderating effect may be confounded by the effects of school grade-level category (i.e., elementary, middle, or high) since perception of positive school climate was lower in middle and high schools than in elementary schools. Despite the difficulty of disentangling school climate from grade-level category, the findings suggest school improvement strategies focused on school climate may promote racial equity in academic outcomes. Additional research on racial equity in SEL and its role in race differences in grades is also warranted.

Research shows aspects of school climate impact students, parents, teachers and administrators. Climate is global to the school yet exists as a microclimate in the classroom. The influencers of climate and reaction to climate are intertwined; as one influences the others, a variety of perspectives contribute to the overall picture. This study considers the teacher perspective as an indicator of climate as part of overall organizational health. As one must consider organizational health as a pertinent part of overall school climate, this research study utilized a reduced form of the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire designed by Bentley and Rempel to measure teacher morale (1980). Teachers from two schools within one district voluntarily and anonymously answered questions on ten subtopics reflecting their experiences as a teacher in the school environment. This organizational health inventory provided feedback from participants on 10 factors indicating levels of agreement or disagreement on a four point Likert scale (from 4 = strongly agree to 1= strongly disagree). Teachers were also asked to indicate years of experience on the presurvey question, as this study also considered if factors such as teacher years of experience had any impact on teacher perspective of climate. School climate data and data from the averages of standardized PARCC test scores per school and subject area were analyzed using Bivariate Correlation tests, revealing no significant relationship between school climate and student achievement. Although survey data provided potential consideration for areas of improvement for the district in the study, recommendations by the researcher are for further study in a wider scope to increase generalizability. Because school climate and student achievement are interrelated, it would benefit administrators to understand which areas of school climate have the greatest impact on student achievement. The State of Georgia measures school climate and achievement with its school accountability measure, College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI). This study employed a quantitative research design using archival data from CCRPI over two years to examine the relationship between school climate and student achievement. The researcher used Pearson's r correlation and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between the two components and the predictive effect of each school climate domain on student achievement for traditionally structured middle schools in the State of Georgia. Findings revealed that all four components of school climate, Survey Score, Discipline Score, Safe and Substance-Free Learning Environment Score, and Attendance Score were all related to student achievement. In addition, the Survey Score and Discipline score had the strongest relationship and was the most significant predictor of student achievement. Findings align with those identified in the literature and provide administrators with essential information to strategically make decisions involving processes and procedures that impact these areas. Future research is needed to determine whether the relationship between school climate and student achievement is similar for elementary, middle, or high schools. In addition, separating the data into rural, suburban, and urban schools and running similar tests may also help administrators specifically in those areas.

Book excerpt: This study explores the extent to which a high school's organizational contexts and individual students' characteristics are related to adolescents' school bond in multiracial schools. It first examines how the racial heterogeneity of a school is associated with the levels of students' school bond, and then explores the roles school climate plays in that relationship. In addition, it examines the link between students' racial minority status in their school and the levels of their school bond and investigates whether the effect of school climate on school bond differs by a student's racial minority status in their school. Data for this research are drawn from the base year of the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS: 2002) and the Common Core of Data (CCD) 2001-02. Using a sample of 12,765 students in 580 public schools from the merged data of the two datasets, this study employs hierarchical linear modeling analyses to explore the relations of a school's racial composition and organizational climate to its students' school bond, taking into account schools' and students' characteristics. Also, cross-level interactions were tested to examine how the roles a school's racial heterogeneity and school climate play in students' level of school bond work for different student groups, based on their racial minority status in the school. The findings of this study show that a school's racial heterogeneity itself has a negative association with the two elements of school bond including school compliance and social connectedness in school. However, it confirms that when students are in schools with a positive school climate, the negative link between a school's heterogeneity and students' school bond disappears or becomes weaker. In addition, this study found out that a student's racial minority status in school is a significant predictor of their level of bonding to a school. Also there is a significant interaction effect between school climate and a student's minority status on the levels of school bond. The findings of this study emphasize schools' roles in improving students' school bond and provide meaningful implications in developing a supportive school system for adolescents in multi-racial secondary school settings.
