Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the current level of job satisfaction in degree seeking registered nurses and to determine if any relationships among job satisfaction and specific nurse characteristics (age, degree program, years of nursing experience, and time employed in current position) exist. A descriptive correlational design was used to investigate job satisfaction with Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Theory providing the theoretical framework. A convenience sample of 22 degree seeking registered nurses at a university in the southern United States was used for the study. Data collection took place over the course of one week in March 2014 using the McCloskey/Mueller Satisfaction Scale and a researcher developed demographic questionnaire. Data analysis was completed using descriptive and Pearson's correlation statistics. Results showed that degree seeking registered nurses were more satisfied than dissatisfied with their current positions. Results suggested that job satisfaction can be improved if nurse leaders implemented strategies to reward and praise nurses and encourage participation in research activities.

Book excerpt: Background: The combination of an ageing population and a growing prevalence of morbidity is placing increasing pressure on an ageing nursing workforce nearing retirement. Further to this, Registered Nurses (RN) who increased their hours or returned to the profession to supplement their family income during the global financial crisis may decide to reduce their hours or leave the profession as family financial circumstances improve. Solutions that address the anticipated nursing shortage should focus on the motivations of RNs and incentives to retain them. Aim: This study seeks to provide new knowledge and understanding concerning the motivations of RNs and the determinants of nursing turnover, so as to facilitate the development of initiatives that work towards improving nursing retention. Methods: This mixed-methods study involved three distinct phases. The semi-structured interviews in the first phase were analysed using a general inductive method of enquiry to develop key themes, which informed the national structured e-survey in the second and third phase. A total of 3,500 e-surveys were distributed via the New Zealand Nurses Organisation and a link to the e-survey was advertised in the Nursing Council of New Zealand's newsletter. Regression analysis explored the research questions and structural equation modelling was used to confirm the research hypotheses. Participants: The qualitative phase involved purposive sampling of nurse leaders and RNs working in clinical practice (n=22), as well as key stakeholders including Health Workforce New Zealand and Nursing Council of New Zealand (n=2). The quantitative phase involved RNs (n=2910) from across New Zealand. Results: Over 50 percent of RNs reported intention to leave the organisation (ITLO) and 15 percent reported intention to leave the profession (ITLP). Statistically significant factors that affected ITLO were burnout, work-life interference, job satisfaction and work engagement. Statistically significant factors that affected ITLP were career orientation, job satisfaction and work engagement. Conclusion: Results highlight the significance that burnout and work engagement play in RN motivation and strengthen the evidence around initiatives that work to reduce burnout and improve work engagement to encourage RNs to remain in the workforce longer despite their changing circumstances

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) (AACN) role with the variables of work related stress, quality of life, job satisfaction and anticipated turnover of acute care nurses. Participants included registered nurses (RNs) (N= 94) in Florida recruited from 3 (not for profit) Magnet hospitals in the Tampa Bay Florida area. An ex post facto design was used to test the hypotheses of this study; independent t-tests compared RN's responses on survey tools measuring work-related stress, quality of life, job satisfaction, and anticipated turnover. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the interrelationships among these variables. RNs (N=94) completed five survey instruments, including a researcher-developed demographic form. The results of the study showed Aim1 which explored work- related stress did not show any statistical difference between the two groups. Aim 2 which explored job satisfaction and quality of life did not show a difference in the two groups when total scores were analyzed. However, the mental health subscale of the Sf-36(quality of life) was significant (p=.021), and the general health subscale of the Sf-36 trended toward the CNL group reporting better general health (p=.080). This study revealed that Aim 3 which explored anticipated turnover was statistically significant (p=.047). Standard multiple regression showed a significant relationship existed between CNLs, work related stress and anticipated turnover. The significance of implementation of the CNL role in decreasing turnover through a relationship with these variables may have an important impact on the nursing profession. Specifically, economic implications vii in reducing turnover that bear further exploration and improving the nursing work environment. This research is the first study to explore the CNL role in relation to these variables.

Book excerpt: The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected a shortage of registered nurses (RNs) growing to an estimated 581,500 by the year 2025 (an increase of 22 percent since 2008). Recent economical downturns have found many healthcare organizations experiencing a positive effect with the stabilization of nursing turnover. Once the economy begins to recover, however, experts predict the profession of nursing will still face the largest shortage in history according to projections by the American Nurses Association. Because lack of job satisfaction is a precursor to resignation, additional research regarding the identification of interventions that increase RN job satisfaction may result in retaining professionally qualified and prepared staff. This study proposed to identify through focus groups, staff nurse perceptions of nurse manager behaviors that influence RN staff nurse job satisfaction. A sample of 28 RNs, each participating in one of five focus groups, answered questions related to satisfaction with nurse manager behaviors. The investigator used qualitative content analysis to identify patterns within and across focus group data. Major findings of the study resulted in the identification of two conceptual categories (manager behaviors supportive of RNs and RN's perceived disconnect of work issues from the manager's role) and three major themes related to supportive behaviors (communication, respect, and feeling cared for). The results suggest the following as staff nurse preferences for nurse manager behaviors: open and honest communication that involves listening, consistency, and confidentiality; an increased level of respect including fairness and recognition of a job well done; and the sense of feeling cared for as when a manager meets individual needs and supports staff as professionals. The investigator compared the categories and themes to previous tools used in healthcare, which indicate the need for further item and/or tool development as well as further research regarding RNs' perceived disconnect of work issues from the manager's role.
