Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine how accurately student achievement in reading could be predicted by student perceptions of certain school climate domains (student support, disciplinary structure, academic expectations, student engagement, and the prevalence of teasing and bullying). Research demonstrated a predictive relationship between school climate domains and student academic achievement. This study applied a quantitative, correlational design to determine the predictive ability of school climate domains on student achievement in reading in rural schools. Rural school outcomes were measured by student responses for each climate domain on the 2018 Virginia School Climate Survey while academic achievement in reading was measured by school pass rates on the 2018 Virginia reading end-of-course standards-of-learning assessment. All 102 rural Virginia high schools were included in this study. Results indicated that while a weak association existed between student perceptions of school climate domains and student achievement in rural schools, a linear combination of student perceptions of school climate domains was not significantly predictive of student achievement in rural schools.

Using survey methods, data were collected using the Organizational Climate Descriptive Questionnaire Revised for Elementary Schools (OCDQ-RE) from 599 teachers in 33 schools located within the Region VII Education Service Center area. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational analysis method and descriptive statistics to determine the relationship between teachers' perceptions of school climate and student achievement. Findings revealed a moderate relationship between teachers' perceptions of teacher openness when compared to standardized test scores and a small association among teachers' perceptions of principal openness and standardized test scores. By examining the overall campus climate evidence was found that campuses having an open or engaged climate typically had a higher percent of students meeting the TAKS standard when compared to campuses with a closed or disengaged climate.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between the teachers' perceptions of the school climate in three urban high schools in a southwest district of Houston, Texas, and the TAKS test scores for 5,625 10th and 11th grade students during the 2010-2011 school year in mathematics and English. The study analyzed the relationship between the teachers' perceptions of school climate and the number and severity of students' office discipline referrals, ranging from offenses Level I such as not following the appropriate school dress code, to offenses level IV such as use or possession of drugs or alcohol, during the same school year. Three hundred and eighty four teachers in the three high schools were invited to complete the Classroom & School Climate Survey for Secondary School Teachers, developed by Freiberg and Stein (2003). Student achievement was measured by the 10th and 11th grade TAKS tests scores generated during the 2010-2011 school year. Number and type of students' office discipline referrals for the 2010-2011 school year were collected using the district's archival data. The relationship between the teachers' perceptions of the school climate and students' achievement and discipline infractions was inconclusive due to the limitations of the data and the fact that the survey results on the three campuses were similar. While not statistically significant, a negative correlation was clearly noted between achievement and the number of discipline infractions. The negative correlations indicate that as the major/minor infractions increase, the English and mathematics TAKS test performance decreases.

There have been many research studies dedicated to determining if a school's culture and climate had an effect on student achievement. This study sought to determine if teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate had an impact on student achievement at the elementary and secondary level. In 1963, Halpin and Croft began their research on the organizational climate of schools and suggested that further research be conducted based on their findings. This research sought to determine if there was a relationship between teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate and students' marking period/trimester 1 grades, teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate and students' Start Strong scores, and teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate and school leadership. The New Jersey School Climate Survey was distributed to teachers in four small school districts in Warren County, NJ. Survey data was collected from a total of 62 respondents, and academic data was provided to the researcher on coded spreadsheets. Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation tests and independent sample t-tests through the use of the SPSS program in order to determine if any potential relationships existed. The data revealed that teachers' perceptions of school culture and climate did not have an impact on student achievement. Additionally, there were a number of relationships that existed with regard to teachers' perceptions of culture and climate and school leadership. The results indicated that the high school respondents answered less favorably compared to the elementary school respondents on the school leadership survey questions. This study may help school leaders have constructive conversations with their staff with regard to the school's culture and climate.(ProQuest abstract).

Survey research methodology was used to identify school climate. The school environment survey was administered to students in the 20 elementary schools in grades three and five. The survey measured 5 dimensions of climate: welcoming environment; physical environment; discipline; nurturing learning environment; and diversity and commonality. In a setting where the median household income is above {dollar}90,000, where resources are abundant in the schools, and where 90% of the students who graduate continue with their education, the findings of this research showed support for the following conclusions. Despite the affluence in this school system: (1) There is a difference in the academic achievement of students, as measured by the state criterion-referenced reading and/or math sections of the MSA test in Title I elementary schools in comparison to non-Title I elementary schools, (2) There is a difference in the academic achievement of students, as measured by a state criterion-referenced reading and/or math sections of the MSA test based on gender, (3) There is a difference in the academic achievement of students, as measured by a state criterion-referenced reading and/or math sections of the MSA test based on ethnicity, (4) There are differences in the perceptions of school climate among students in Title I elementary schools versus non-Title elementary schools, (5) There are differences in the perceptions of school climate among students based on gender, and (6) There are differences in the perceptions of school climate among students based on ethnicity. -- Abstract.

Research shows aspects of school climate impact students, parents, teachers and administrators. Climate is global to the school yet exists as a microclimate in the classroom. The influencers of climate and reaction to climate are intertwined; as one influences the others, a variety of perspectives contribute to the overall picture. This study considers the teacher perspective as an indicator of climate as part of overall organizational health. As one must consider organizational health as a pertinent part of overall school climate, this research study utilized a reduced form of the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire designed by Bentley and Rempel to measure teacher morale (1980). Teachers from two schools within one district voluntarily and anonymously answered questions on ten subtopics reflecting their experiences as a teacher in the school environment. This organizational health inventory provided feedback from participants on 10 factors indicating levels of agreement or disagreement on a four point Likert scale (from 4 = strongly agree to 1= strongly disagree). Teachers were also asked to indicate years of experience on the presurvey question, as this study also considered if factors such as teacher years of experience had any impact on teacher perspective of climate. School climate data and data from the averages of standardized PARCC test scores per school and subject area were analyzed using Bivariate Correlation tests, revealing no significant relationship between school climate and student achievement. Although survey data provided potential consideration for areas of improvement for the district in the study, recommendations by the researcher are for further study in a wider scope to increase generalizability. Principals and teachers from four south central Pennsylvania high schools were questioned using an online survey consisting of both Likert-scale statements and open-ended questions. Participants were also provided the opportunity to participate in an interview to provide more in-depth responses. Data instruments were used to access the school climate perceptions of principals and teachers to identify specific school climate characteristics that affect the SPP score. Principals and teachers identified instruction and assessment, the physical appearance of the building, and leadership and decision-making as significant school climate characteristics. Principals and teachers perceived that a positive school climate does have an impact on student achievement, however results of this survey were unable to identify a relationship between school climate and a school's SPP score. Results found evidence to support previous school climate research supporting the establishment of a positive school climate, including maintaining a safe learning environment, a focus on academics, positive student-teacher relations, and effective leadership abilities can positively impact student achievement. Study data showed school climate to be an important multidimensional concept and that study participants were leveraging school climate characteristics to affect student achievement outcomes.

Data was collected from 75 teachers in three high performing schools and 75 teachers in three low performing schools from one school district. The Revised School Level Environment Questionnaire (Revised SLEQ) was the instrument utilized in the study to measure teachers' perceptions of overall school climate in addition to the five aforementioned subscales. The results obtained from the 150 surveys were analyzed using a multiple independent samples t tests to identify if there was a statistical difference between group means on the Revised SLEQ. This study is significant because it provide individuals in the field of education with evidence that their perceptions might be impacted by the academic achievement in their schools. The study was also intended to provide evidence that perceptions play a very important role in the overall effectiveness of an educational institution. The study revealed that there was a significant difference between the two populations with regards to overall school climate, student relations, school resources, instructional innovation while there was not a significant difference with regards to decision making and collaboration. Future research is recommended to investigate teachers’ perceptions of school climate with the incorporation of a larger population and the incorporation of more recent data.
