A correlational design was used with a sample of 302 students from three South Carolina Title I schools. The students’ oral reading fluency (DORF) and overall, informational, and literary comprehension scores (MAP) were recorded. The researcher completed three bivariate linear regression analyses to determine if overall, informational, and literary comprehension could be predicted by students’ oral reading fluency rates. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Data were collected using the spring 2008 Grade 4 Reading Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) and the 2007-2008 System to Enhance Educational Performance (STEEP) oral reading fluency assessments. The Pearson r was used to analyze the data. The .05 level of significance was accepted. The results showed a significant correlation between the reading CRCT scores and the corresponding oral reading fluency STEEP scores for these students. The findings indicated that students who read fluently comprehend better and they perform better on state-mandated tests.

Book excerpt: Current emphasis on adequate academic progress monitored by standardized assessments has increased focus on student acquisition of required skills. Reading ability can be assessed through student achievement on Oral Reading Fluency (ORF) measures. This study investigated the effectiveness of using ORF measures to predict achievement on high stakes tests. Study participants included 312 students across four Title 1 elementary schools in a Southwestern United States school district utilizing the Response to Intervention (RTI) model. Participants' ORF scores from first through third grade years and their third grade standardized achievement test scores were collected. In addition, information regarding reading interventions was obtained. Pearson product-moment correlations were used to determine how ORF scores and specific reading skills were related. Correlations were also used to assess whether the ORF scores from the fall, winter, or spring were most related to high stakes test scores. Additionally, the difference between computer-based versus instructor-led interventions on predicting high stakes test scores was assessed. Results indicated that correlation coefficients were larger between ORF and reading comprehension scores than between ORF and basic reading skills. ORF scores from spring were more highly related to high stakes tests than other times of the year. Students' ORF scores were more strongly related to high stakes tests when in computer-based interventions compared to instructor-led interventions. In predicting third grade high stakes test scores, first grade ORF scores had the most variance for the non-intervention sample, while third grade ORF scores had the most variance for the intervention sample.

The purpose of this study was to investigate third grade archival data of students over a 2-year period at one school to determine if a relationship existed between the DIBELS 3rd grade oral reading fluency scores and the reading scores on Stanford Achievement Test and the reading scores on the Alabama Reading and Math Test. Archival data from 80 third grade African American students who were assessed with all three assessments was used to conduct this study. Pearson and Spearman statistical tests were performed on the data to examine the relationship between DIBELS (oral reading fluency) and the reading section of the Stanford Achievement Test and the reading section of the Alabama Reading and Math Test. The results indicated a relationship existed between DIBELS oral reading fluency scores and the reading scores on Stanford Achievement Test and the reading scores on the Alabama Reading and Math Test during the 2009-2010 school years.

Since the growth on these assessments are used in calculating teachers and administrators' yearly job evaluations, the significance of these measures has never been higher. Teachers and administrators want to know if the time spent on measures such as reading fluency is worth the sacrifice in the instructional day, when this time could be spent on teaching state mandated standards. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental correlational study was to examine the relationship of reading fluency, the predictor variable, and reading comprehension, the criterion variable, among third, fourth, and fifth grade students from a rural, Title 1 school district in southwest Georgia. A Pearson product moment correlation was used to answer the following research question: Is there a relationship between a third, fourth, or fifth grade student's oral reading fluency score, as measured by Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills, and their reading comprehension score, as measured by Scholastic Reading Inventory? The results of this study have determined a strong positive correlation exists between reading fluency and reading comprehension in grades three, four, and five. The inclusion of Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension did not diminish the relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension. Further research is needed using Lexile as the measure for reading comprehension to broaden the generalization of this study.

A Pearsons R was used to analyze the data to see if there was a significant correlation. After the data was evaluated, the results proved that there is not a statistically significant correlation between DIBELS ORF scores and the Reading Comprehension scores. Recommendations for further research includes collecting data from a larger number of students, collecting data from another school system, analyzing specific demographics within the data collected, etc.

Research has shown a significant positive relationship between reading fluency and reading comprehension. However, little is known about writing fluency and its connection with reading comprehension. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between reading fluency, writing fluency, and reading comprehension. First, using the principles of assessing reading fluency, I designed a writing assessment and measured the writing fluency of 54 3rd graders. I examined the writing assessments as they related to the students' reading fluency and reading comprehension scores. Secondly, I performed a quasi-experimental scientific study with 3rd grade students. The control group (n=36) were taught the board-adopted language arts curriculum, while the experimental group (n=18) had systematic direct instruction in reading and writing fluency in addition to the regular language arts curriculum. The research questions were: What is the relationship between students' reading comprehension and reading fluency among a group of third graders? What is the relationship between their reading comprehension and writing fluency? What is the relationship between their reading fluency and writing fluency? Will the experimental group of students with direct instruction in reading and writing fluency outperform the control group in reading comprehension? What other factors are involved in increasing reading comprehension? Pearson's correlation statistic, paired t-tests, independent samples t-tests, and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyze the data. All statistical analyses were performed using PASW (formerly SPSS) for Windows. Consistent with reading research, the results showed there was a strongly positive correlation between reading comprehension and reading fluency. This study also found a correlation between reading comprehension and writing as well as a correlation between reading comprehension and writing fluency. However, the link between reading comprehension and writing fluency was not found in pretest measurement, or the posttest-pretest measurement. The ANOVA results showed that reading and writing fluency explained a statistically significant 50% of the total variance in reading comprehension scores. This study also showed a strong positive correlation between reading fluency and writing fluency in the posttest measurement. In the quasi-experimental study, the experimental group did not outperform the experimental group: both groups made significant progress. The major implication of this study is that writing could help increase reading comprehension, which results in another tool for teachers to use in teaching reading comprehension. This could result in an additional emphasis in teaching writing skills in the classroom.
