Download or read book Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color, Volume 1 written by Jon Grahe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-10 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Psychological Research Contributions from Women of Color, Volume I, collects the dissertations of 20 cultural pioneers: women of color who were among the first to earn their doctorate degrees in psychology. Collectively, these chapters offer an important resource to diversify the history of psychology. This book is structured so that each chapter provides a biographical sketch of the woman, a summary of the dissertation, a reproducibility critique, a discussion about a modern alternative theory or methodological approach associated with the work (feminist theory, ethnopsychology, liberation psychology, etc.), and examples of how the dissertation can be used as instructional content in psychology and related disciplines offers suggestions for classroom use. The dissertations were completed as early as 1912 and as late as 1979 with the range reflecting differences in when women of certain groups could access education. The topics also range broadly across the breadth of the field of psychology, including physiological, cognitive, developmental, social, clinical, and more topics. The diversity of the work collected here will allow this book to be used to augment coursework either as a complete collection or as individual chapters. Instructors and students in undergraduate and graduate Research Methods courses will find this a crucial text in maintaining a true and inclusive historical perspective of psychological research. Additionally, due to the inclusion of research spanning the breadth of Psychology, this edited volume will appeal to scholars both across the discipline and in related fields, such as Women's Studies, Cognitive Science, Education, and Cultural Studies.

Book Synopsis Beyond Adolescence by : Richard Jessor
Download or read book Beyond Adolescence written by Richard Jessor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Adolescence traces the lives of adolescents and youth from the late 1960s into the late seventies and early eighties. It is unusual because of the period of time in which the study took place, as well as because of the portion of the lifespan it covers - early adulthood. Concerned with understanding the role of problem behaviour in young adulthood and the factors that influence it, the study also traces outcomes on young adulthood of earlier involvements in problem behaviour, with an emphasis on personality and social environment. The research extends and tests the theoretical framework that guided the study - Problem Behaviour Theory - and shows its usefulness for understanding young adult problem behaviour and development.

Book excerpt: There is a gap between the hope for improved social conditions in post-apartheid South Africa and the grim reality of black life there is especially striking for South African children who face serious threats to their health and development as a consequence of poverty, racism, violence, and residual social inequality. Mandela's Children presents the contrasting conditions of hope and peril that characterize life in South African families, schools, and communities. This discussion is balanced by one that considers the competence, health and resilience of South African children.

Book Synopsis Flourishing in Emerging Adulthood by : Laura M. Padilla-Walker
Download or read book Flourishing in Emerging Adulthood written by Laura M. Padilla-Walker and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flourishing in Emerging Adulthood highlights the third decade of life as a time in which individuals have diverse opportunities for positive development. There is mounting evidence that this time period, at least for a significant majority, is a unique developmental period in which positive development is fostered. Dr. Lene Arnett Jensen highlights the importance of this work in an engaging foreword, and chapters are written by leading scholars in diverse disciplines who address various aspects of flourishing. They discuss multiple aspects of positive development including how young people flourish in key areas of emerging adulthood (e.g., identity, love, work, worldviews), the various unique opportunities afforded to young people to flourish, how flourishing might look different around the world, and how flourishing can occur in the face of challenge. Most chapters are accompanied by first-person essays written by a range of emerging adults who exemplify the aspect of flourishing denoted in that chapter and make note of how choices and experiences have helped them transition to adulthood. Taken together, this innovative collection provides rich evidence and examples of how young people are flourishing as a group and as individuals in a variety of settings and circumstances. This unique resource will be useful to students, faculty, professionals, clinicians, and university personnel who work with young adults or who study development during emerging adulthood.
Book Synopsis The Challenges of Diaspora Migration by : Rainer K. Silbereisen
Download or read book The Challenges of Diaspora Migration written by Rainer K. Silbereisen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diaspora or 'ethnic return' migrants have often been privileged in terms of citizenship and material support when they seek to return to their ancestral land, yet for many, after long periods of absence - sometimes extending to generations - acculturation to their new environment is as complex as that experienced by other immigrant groups. Indeed, the mismatch between the idealized hopes of the returning migrants and the high expectations for social integration by the new host country results in particular difficulties of adaptation for this group of immigrants, often with high societal costs. This interdisciplinary, comparative volume examines migration from German and Jewish Diasporas to Germany and Israel, examining the roles of origin, ethnicity, and destination in the acculturation and adaptation of immigrants. The book presents results from various projects within a large research consortium that compared the adaptation of Diaspora immigrants with that of other immigrant groups and natives in Israel and Germany. With close attention to specific issues relating to Diaspora immigration, including language acquisition, acculturation strategies, violence and 'breaches with the past', educational and occupational opportunities, life course transitions and preparation for moving between countries, The Challenges of Diaspora Migration will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in migration and ethnicity, Diaspora and return migration.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Marriage and the Family by : Suzanne K. Steinmetz
Download or read book Handbook of Marriage and the Family written by Suzanne K. Steinmetz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 932 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lucid, straightforward Preface of this Handbook by the two editors and the comprehenSIve perspec tives offered in the Introduction by one ofthem leave little for a Foreword to add. It is therefore limIted to two relevant but not intrinsically related points vis-a-vis research on marriage and the family in the interval since the fIrst Handbook (Christensen, 1964) appeared, namely: the impact on this research ofthe politicization of the New RIght! and of the Feminist Enlightenment beginning in the mid-sixties, about the time of the fIrst Handbook. In the late 1930s Willard Waller noted: "Fifty years or more ago about 1890, most people had the greatest respect for the institution called the family and wished to learn nothing whatever about it. . . . Everything that concerned the life of men and women and their children was shrouded from the light. Today much of that has been changed. Gone is the concealment of the way in which life begins, gone the irrational sanctity of the home. The aura of sentiment which once protected the family from discussion clings to it no more .... We wantto learn as much about it as we can and to understand it as thoroughly as possible, for there is a rising recognition in America that vast numbers of its families are sick-from internal frustrations and from external buffeting. We are engaged in the process of reconstructing our family institutions through criticism and discussion" (1938, pp. 3-4).

Book Synopsis Politics, Work, and Daily Life in the USSR by : James R. Millar
Download or read book Politics, Work, and Daily Life in the USSR written by James R. Millar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics, work, and daily life in the USSR is designed to illustrate how the Soviet social system really works and how the Soviet people cope with it. This study is based on the first comprehensive survey of life in the USSR since the Harvard Project over thiry-three years ago. The essays contained analyze the variations in attitude and behaviour reflected in the findings of the Soviet Interview Project, a five-year investigation of contemporary daily life in the USSR. The survey involved interviewing thousands of recent emigrants from the USSR to the United States as a means of learning about their former day-to-day lives. Some aspects of this survey dealt with areas the Soviets themselves had never investigated, so the data were not, and indeed still are not, available even in unpublished Soviet sources. This study of a large volume of firsthand observations is extremely valuable to anyone interested in the inner workings and behavioural dynamics of the contemporary Soviet social system.
