Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship between high school principals' leadership style and teacher efficacy. A mixed method study was conducted using an online survey of current public high school teachers in southeastern Michigan. The quantitative portions of the survey consisted of the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale TES, short form (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk-Hoy, 2001) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Avolio & Bass, 2004). Investigation of correlations, if any, were calculated by using Pearson's "r" to understand the aspects of a transformational leadership style that were correlated to high teacher self-efficacy. A factor analysis and reliability investigation indicated that the data generated with the chosen instruments was highly reliable for measuring principals' leadership style and teacher efficacy. Finally, in the qualitative part of the survey, study participants provided answers to an open-ended question about the single most negative factor impacting teacher self-efficacy in today's schools. All teachers' self-efficacy mean scores on a Likert-type scale of 1 to 5 on the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TES), short form, ranged from 3.25 to 5, indicating relatively high to high sense of self-efficacy. There were no participants whose self-efficacy mean scores ranged from 1 and>3.25, indicating a relatively low to low self-efficacy rating. Weak to moderate positive correlations were found between teachers with relatively high to high self-efficacy ratings and principals who have transformational leadership styles, especially the characteristic of Intellectual Stimulation. Because all teachers rated their sense of self-efficacy to be relatively high to high, and with no data available to compare relatively low to low scores and principals' leadership style, the data regarding the existence of a relationship between the variables was inconclusive, and the null hypothesis was accepted. No significant relationship exists between high school principals' leadership styles and teacher self-efficacy. In the qualitative portion of the survey instrument, teachers responded to an open-ended question about negative impacts on their sense of efficacy in schools. Comments were analyzed and grouped into themes that included governmental mandates, regulations, and budget cuts; quality of school administration; and parent and community perceptions of education. In general, teachers want to feel valued by parents, the community and the public; they look to their principals for support, guidance, consistency, and acknowledgement. Finally, the mandates and legislative changes that have taken place in Michigan have had a negative impact on teachers' self-efficacy. These responses provided greater understanding of the opinions of the teacher participants in this study. The results of this study have implications for leadership at the district and building level. Building principals who have a transformational leadership style are more likely to foster teachers with high self-efficacy ratings; this, in turn, creates an environment for higher levels of student achievement. It is important that district-level leaders hire transformational leaders and encourage such approaches in existing principals through focused professional development. This study's results have implications for principal preparation programs, encouraging courses that support the development of transformational leadership skills and recognizing the research-based connection to leadership style and high teacher self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study addressed the idea that a middle school principal could possibly impact teacher effectiveness in the classroom through the relationship of the teacher- perceived leadership style of the principal to teacher job satisfaction and efficacy. The sample consisted of 142 certified teachers from 8 public middle schools in an East Tennessee school district. Teachers completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, (Bass & Avolio, 2004) and the Job Satisfaction Survey, (Spector, 1994). Findings from this study suggest that the middle school teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership did not have a statistically significant relationship to teacher job satisfaction. A new insight from this study suggests that principals should find ways to lead beyond teacher perceptions to address the needs of teachers in order to promote and encourage higher levels of teacher job satisfaction. Furthermore, findings from this study suggest that the middle school teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership style had a statistically significant relationship to teacher efficacy. Findings from the exploratory question at the end of the surveys further validated this study by indicating teachers perceived their need for principal leadership to help them become more effective in the classroom by incorporating elements of both transformational and transactional leadership. This research may assist in developing leadership style training for principals desiring to indirectly influence academic achievement by influencing teacher job satisfaction and efficacy within their schools.

Book excerpt: This qualitative study examined middle school teachers' perceptions of (a) factors of school climate, (b) teacher efficacy in the workplace, and (c) school climate's effects on teacher efficacy. Participants in the study included 151 teachers from four middle schools, grade six through eight, located within the same school district in south central Pennsylvania. Qualitative data were gathered from 151 teachers who completed two survey instruments and three open-ended questions. Individual interviews were conducted with 20 teachers and observations were conducted at each study site. Findings of the data showed that three factors of school climate were consistently evident throughout the various data collection methods: (a) Academic Emphasis, (b) Teacher Affiliation, and (c) Collegial Leadership. Participants perceived the four middle schools to be orderly and serious, and teacher relationships were determined to be positive and supportive. The relationship between the principal and teachers was also perceived as friendly and helpful. Participants reported that an adequate supply of resources and materials were available for classroom use. The relationship between the principal and the superintendent was perceived as cordial. However, mixed perceptions were reported about the ability of the principals to secure resources and support for their individual schools. The survey data revealed that teachers perceived students to be (a) unmotivated to ask for help, (b) disinterested in completing assignments, and (c) disrespectful of those who succeed academically. Teacher efficacy was perceived to be high in regard to (a) student engagement, (b) instructional strategies, and (c) classroom management. The majority of the participants perceived the climate of their school to have an impact on their teaching efficacy and cited such factors as (a) an orderly environment, (b) academic focus, (c) students, (d) teacher relationships, (e) principal relations with teachers, (f) home influences, (g) instructional strategies, and (h) teacher motivation.

Multiple regression analysis found that only years at current school that was significant in how they perceived their principal's transformational or passive avoidant leadership style. No demographic variables were significant for transactional style or school status. Overall, teachers were satisfied with the principal's leadership style and effectiveness. Teachers most often cited school culture as having an influence on student achievement in both improving and non-improving schools. Limitations of the study included self-reported teacher perceptions of principal leadership style from 16 schools in one school district which limits generalizability; no controls for teacher classroom performance and no verification of respondents actually observing principal behaviors; time of year survey was given; and, the use of one instrument to measure leadership style may not reflect the actual leadership style of the principal.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the relationship between teachers' perceptions of their principals' instructional leadership behaviors and transformational leadership behaviors. In addition, the study examined the relationship between teachers' perceptions of their principals' instructional leadership and a principals' level of degree and principals' teaching area background. This quantitative study was driven by two teacher questionnaires: the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). The subscales examined in the PIRMS include framing the school goals, communicating the school goals, supervising and evaluating instruction, coordinating the curriculum, monitoring student progress, protecting instructional time, maintaining high visibility, providing incentives for teachers, promoting professional development, and providing incentives for learning . The subscales utilized for the MLQ include idealized influence (attributes), idealized influence (behaviors), inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration. In addition to the teacher questionnaires, the principals answered two demographic questions about their level of education and their principal teaching area background. A multiple regression analysis was used to determine if the transformational 2 leadership subscales, principals' level of degree, or principals' teaching area background are predictors of effective instructional leadership. The findings from this study depicted a strong relationship between instructional and transformational leadership behaviors. In addition, "intellectual stimulation," "idealized influence (behavior)," and "individual consideration" are the three best predictors of instructional leadership behaviors as identified by the regression analyses. The findings from the study did not find that a principals' level of education or a principals' teaching area background are predictors of effective instructional leadership as perceived by teachers.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the individually considerate transformational leadership practices of school leaders and peer cohesion among teachers in high performing schools. Specifically, the study explores the relationship between teachers' perception of the importance of the individually considerate transformational leadership practices of school principals (support of school staff members and development of staff members' leadership potential) and teachers' perception of the importance of a collegial, cohesive climate among the teaching faculty at successful schools in North Carolina. Survey data were collected from 53 teachers from 26 high performing elementary schools under the North Carolina ABCs accountability program. The method of analysis is multiple regression. An F statistic is used to determine if there is a significant relationship between the dependent variables and the independent variable. The purpose of this study was to better understand how principal leadership behaviors affect teacher collective efficacy beliefs. The study was designed around Goddard, Hoy, and Hoy's construct of teacher collective efficacy, which is grounded on Bandura's efficacy constructs. The sequential mixed-methods study was designed to examine the perceptions of teacher participants from one Texas Title I middle school regarding principal leadership behaviors. A case study approach was used to construct meaning from teachers' perceptions about the effects of principal behaviors on teachers' beliefs regarding the components of collective efficacy. The quantitative portion of the study (a survey) examined teacher perceptions of their collective efficacy beliefs regarding various facets of the school organization. The qualitative portion (focus group and individual interviews) centered on what teachers perceive to be the impact of principal leadership behaviors on their teacher collective efficacy. Findings from the quantitative portion of the study suggest that teachers perceive their levels of collective efficacy to be higher when reflecting on factors that are primarily connected to school, like learning, motivating students, and handling student discipline issues. Findings from the qualitative portion of the study suggest that when principals exhibit collaboration, empowerment, relationship building, and trust, teachers perceive the leader to be effective. The study was limited to one Title I middle school so an extension to the study which would include other middle or additional high schools is recommended.
