Book excerpt: Experiences of intergenerational family conflict are a prominent concern within the Asian American community. They are at a heightened risk of experiencing intergenerational family conflict compared to other immigrant families. Intergenerational family conflict occurs when an immigrant parent acculturates to a new mainstream culture at a slower rate than the offspring and as a result, an acculturation mismatch is created. Intergenerational family conflict is unique to this population because acculturation-based conflict involves cultural differences that tend to deepen over time, lasting beyond the adolescent stage. According to several findings, Asian American families are experiencing poorer psychological adjustment along with many other acculturative stressors they are simultaneously navigating. This dissertation includes a comprehensive review of the literature related to the psychological needs of Asian American interventions. The impact of current and historical acculturative stressors is explored to provide context to the occurrence of intergenerational family conflict. A primary aim of this study is to decrease the gap in the literature for interventions to treat Asian Americans struggling with family conflict and acculturative stressors and increase providers’ capability to deliver culturally congruent treatment.

In this process, individuals can maintain their culture of origin as well as adopting aspects of the dominant or heritage culture. Many researchers have examined the acculturation process; however, there has been little research on the impact of acculturation on a family, and more specifically Hindu Indian American families. The current study assessed if acculturation and religiosity were predictors of intergenerational family conflict for second generation Hindu Indian Americans. The Vancouver Index of Acculturation (VAI; Ryder, Paulhas, and Alden, 2000) was used to determine the levels of acculturation while the Family Conflict Scale, (FCS; Lee et al., 2003) was used to examine perceived family conflict for participants in terms of themselves and their families. The Brief Religiosity Scale (Dollinger, 1996) was used to assess religiosity as well as some questions about perceived religiosity of self, mother, and father.

The papers are organized in sections under subtitles which reflect three contextual frames through which these issues may be examined. The first section focuses on the relationship between economic factors and resources on the one hand and family relations as environments for development on the other. The next part focuses on family and peer networks and relations as contexts for the emotional and social development of adolescents. The last section takes neighborhood and school as contexts for and determinants of social and emotional adjustment in adolescence. Like much of the extant work and current thought concerning development in ethnic minority children and adolescents, the authors have highlighted the more stressful and negative aspects of these several contexts. There are a few explicit and several implicit references made to supportive and more positive contexts and manifestations of relationships which frame the developmental experiences of ethnic minority adolescents. These serve as a reminder that many ethnic minority adolescents do overcome the odds against success and grow into healthy and wholesome adults. However, in large measure, this book is a contribution to our understanding of the problematic circumstances under which a significant segment of the population exists, reminding us that life for ethnic minority adolescents is difficult. The fact that some of these young people manage to overcome the negative and stressful aspects of their experiences and defy the implicit prediction of failure to thrive is truly remarkable.

The current study was designed to understand the various factors that influence intergenerational family conflict including acculturation and religious values in Hindu Asian Indian families. This study is a qualitative group (family) interview investigation conducted in order to identify sources of intergenerational family conflict, understand the retention of cultural values within a family given the process of acculturation, understand if and how Hinduism (religious values) plays a role in intergenerational family conflict and family cohesiveness given acculturation, and find strategies families use to overcome identified sources of intergenerational family conflict. A grounded theory approach was used to study the different families (cases). Separate results for parents and siblings are presented and overall findings are discussed. A theory about understanding conflict for the Hindu Asian Indian family is presented.

The nature of the parent-child relationship begins with parenting—the practices and strategies that parents engage in as they raise their children. Parenting during childhood sets the stage for parent-adolescent relati- ships. These relationships make a critical difference during the teenage years: we know that when parent-adolescent relationships are healthy and strong, adolescents are more likely to have high aspirations and achievement, and to make healthier choices when it comes to risk-taking. Most of the research in this ?eld has been based in the United States and has been conducted through studies of European American families. Yet a growing body of research suggests important ethnic differences in styles of parenting and the qua- ties characterizing the parent-adolescent relationship. In this area of research, most existing studies have examined ethnic and cultural group differences using widely accepted measures and concepts of parenting. Comparative studies assume that dimensions of parenting such as parental warmth or control have the same meaning across cultures; however, given that conceptualizations of adolescent-parent re- tionships have been developed and tested on samples comprised largely of European Americans, we cannot rule out the possibility that the way we understand parenting has been shaped by the predominantly Western- and U. S. -focused research in this ?eld.
