Book excerpt: Most acculturation research has been focused on the direct relationship between acculturation and mental health (Yoon, Langrehr, & Ong, 2011; Salanta & Lauderdaleb, 2003; Koneru, Weisman de Mamania, Flynn, & Betancourt, 2007). However, less is known about the mechanisms for this relationship. Social-cultural resources such as friend and neighbor support may have a beneficial impact on mental health, and acculturative stress such as the level of family conflict and perceived racial discrimination would be expected to be risk factors (Kawachi & Berkman, 2001; Wolff & Agree, 2004; Gong et al., 2003; Kerr-Correa, Igami, Hiroce, & Tucchi, 2007). The present study investigated the mediating roles of acculturative stress and social-psychological resources in the relationship between acculturation and psychological distress among first generation Asian Americans. Data were from 1528 Asian Americans who participated in the National Latino and Asian Americans Study (NLAAS), a nationally representative study of the Asian immigrant population in the U.S. Using structural equation modeling with latent variables, direct and indirect influences on Asian immigrant psychological distress were examined. The findings indicate that higher acculturation was not directly associated with psychological distress for Asian immigrants, but there was an indirect pathway from higher acculturation to poorer mental health through acculturative stress. Asian immigrants with higher levels of acculturation experienced more acculturative stress, which contributed to more psychological distress symptoms. However, this finding was moderated by gender, holding only for women. On the other hand, while a higher level of acculturation was also associated with more perceived social resources, the expected protective effect of these resources was not present. The findings show the complex relationship between acculturation and psychological distress during the acculturative process of Asian immigrants.

This review found that these groups are exposed to risk factors for mental disorders before, during, and after migration. The prevalence of psychotic, mood, and substance-use disorders in these groups varies but overall resembles that in the host populations. Refugees and asylum seekers, however, have higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder. Poor socioeconomic conditions are associated with increased rates of depression five years after resettlement. Refugees, asylum seekers, and irregular migrants encounter barriers to accessing mental health care. Good practice for mental health care includes promoting social integration, developing outreach services, coordinating health care, providing information on entitlements and available services, and training professionals to work with these groups. These actions require resources and organizational flexibility.

A sample of 30 respondents was obtained from employees at a mental health agency. All respondents volunteered to participate in the study. The participants completed a self-administered questionnaire, which includes demographic questions, and surveys that measure acculturation and depression level. A quantitative design was used. Results indicated that there was no significant relationship between acculturation and depression level. The findings further indicated that there was no significant difference between acculturation and depression by gender. There was also no correlation between acculturation and depression and age, education, and income. Implications for future research and social work practice were addressed.

Book excerpt: Research examining mental health within South Asian populations indicates higher levels of psychological distress in this group. However, uptake of psychological services is low. This thesis explores factors that relate to well-being within South Asians, with a particular focus on barriers to accessing psychological services for Muslims. In section one, a systematic review of the literature examines the relationship between the process of acculturation and psychological well-being in South Asians in Westernised societies. This review suggests that acculturation affects a number of different constructs and correlates of well-being. However, factors such as age, gender and generational differences appear to affect the nature of the relationship. Section two reports findings from a quantitative study carried out using a sample of 94 adult participants from Britain who identify themselves as Muslims of South Asian origin. The relationship between shame/izzat surrounding mental health and intention to access psychological services is investigated. Other, more established variables, which predict intention to seek psychological services, are also examined. Findings indicate that shame/izzat and biological beliefs about the cause of mental health problems predict lesser intent to access psychological services, whereas higher levels of acculturation and education predict greater intention. However, results also suggest differences between individuals who have migrated to Britain and those that have been born in the country, with shame/izzat playing a more important role in intent for the migrant group. Personal and theoretical reflections are discussed in section three. In particular, the concepts behind conducting culturally appropriate research are considered and areas for future research are examined.

Book excerpt: Acculturation theories have recently been updated; perceived discrimination is now thought to influence the relationship between acculturation style and mental health. This study tested the hypothesis, along with gender differences in acculturation, perceived discrimination, and perceived discrimination as a moderator in the acculturation-distress relationship. It was thought that differences in gender role expectations for South Asian males and females would suggest possible differences in acculturation. It was also predicted that differential gender based cultural stereotypes would suggest differences in perceived discrimination and its role in the acculturation-distress relationship for South Asian males versus females. The results of the study found a moderate and significant direct relationship between perceived discrimination and psychological distress. Current acculturation theories may need revision in light of these findings. Therapists working with South Asian clients should also consider the role discrimination can play in impacting mental health, instead of focusing exclusively on acculturation difficulties.

Book excerpt: Even with the significant diversity between groups identified as Asian American, literature continues to place these numerous populations into one group. Combining such diverse groups into one category hides large differences and tends to defeat the purpose of much of the research (Durvasula & Mylvaganam, 1994). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between ethnic identity, acculturation, and self-esteem in second-generation Asian Indian adults based on the assertion that ethnic identity is crucial to self-esteem and psychological functioning of ethnic group members (Phinney, 1990). Using the Suinn-Lew Self-Identity Acculturation Scale (Suinn, Rikard-Figueroa, Lew, & Vigil, 1987), the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (Phinney, 1992), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965), correlational analyses were conducted. The results of this study indicate no significant relationship between the participants' ethnic identity and self esteem, ethnic identity and age, or self esteem and age. The data showed that the majority of participants endorsed an integrated level of acculturation. The results provide a preliminary understanding of the way in which this population views and processes its ability to develop a bicultural way of living in the United States.
