This book was released on 2016 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, it is aimed to determination of the relationship between learning styles and TIMSS mathematics achievements of eighth grade students. Correlational research design that is one of the quantitative research methods, was used in this study. The sample of the research consists of 652 8th grade students 347 are male and 305 are female and the students continue their education in 11 different middle schools in the centre of Bayburt in Turkey. In the research, two data collection tools were used. The first tool is Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire (PLSPQ) that was developed by Reid (1987) and translated by Bengi ̇(2008) into Turkish. The second tool is 45-questions achievement test that selected from TIMSS 2011 mathematics questions according to experts' opinions. Frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, ANOVA and correlation analysis were applied through SPSS for data analysis. The most dominant learning style of the students is auditory and the second one is kinaesthetic learning style. Students' general TIMSS scores vary between 11 and 94 and the average TIMSS achievement score is 43.38. Additionally, it was seen that there is no significant relationship between TIMSS mathematics achievement and learning styles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death and taxes come later; what seems inevitable for children is the idea that, after spending the day at school, they must then complete more academic assignments at home. The predictable results: stress and conflict, frustration and exhaustion. Parents respond by reassuring themselves that at least the benefits outweigh the costs. But what if they don't? In The Homework Myth, nationally known educator and parenting expert Alfie Kohn systematically examines the usual defenses of homework--that it promotes higher achievement, "reinforces" learning, and teaches study skills and responsibility. None of these assumptions, he shows, actually passes the test of research, logic, or experience. So why do we continue to administer this modern cod liver oil -- or even demand a larger dose? Kohn's incisive analysis reveals how a mistrust of children, a set of misconceptions about learning, and a misguided focus on competitiveness have all left our kids with less free time and our families with more conflict. Pointing to parents who have fought back -- and schools that have proved educational excellence is possible without homework -- Kohn shows how we can rethink what happens during and after school in order to rescue our families and our children's love of learning.

Book excerpt: This study investigated differences among students' preferential learning styles and their academic achievement. The hypothesis was tested for the total sample population and the subgroups of: gender and ethnicity (Anglo, Hispanic, Asian). Two self-reporting assessment instruments were administered to 200 eighth graders to determine learning style and modality preferences: abstract-sequential (AS); concrete-sequential (CS); abstract-random (AR); concrete-random (CR); auditory (A); visual (V); kinesthetic-tactual (KT). Using GPA categories, the sample population was selected through by stratified-random and systematic sampling. Gifted, special education and ESL students were excluded. Academic performance was measured by GPA and CTBS standardized scores. One way ANOVA with Tukey-Kramer, two-tailed test at.05 was used to determine statistical significance. Significant academic variances were found among students' preferential learning styles and modality groups within the total population and within specific subgroups. Significant variances were observed between the highest achievers (left-brain dominant, AS/A learners) and the lowest achievers (right-brain dominant, CR/KT learners). The men score achievement pattern ranged from highest to lowest: learning styles (AS, AR, CS, CR); modalities (A, V, KT). Students preferring abstract learning strategies demonstrated higher achievement levels than those who preferring concrete. Among subgroups, the highest scores were earned by: Asians, Anglos, and AS/A females, respectively. The lowest scores were demonstrated by: Anglo males and CR/KT Hispanic. Females preferred left-brain dominant/sequential learning styles (AS, CS) while the males preferred right-brain dominant/random styles CR, AR). Females preferred abstract learning styles (AS, AR) to concrete ones. Males preferred concrete styles (CR, CS) to abstract ones. Females preferred auditory modality while males preferred visual. This research confirms that there are significant variances in academic achievement among students with differing learning style and instructional modality preferences. The concern raised is whether or not some students are advantaged or disadvantaged in the learning environment by congruency or incongruency of teaching/learning styles. Additional research is needed in order to determine to what degree matching teaching/learning styles may improve academic achievement among learners now identified at risk.
