Twenty-eight Junior and 33 Senior nursing students--from a Bachelor degree program completed the Beck Srivastava Stress Inventory--(BSSI) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). Data were analyzed using--frequency distribution, t-tests, content analysis, measures of correlation, and analysis--of variance.--Results showed that the students experienced high stress levels in Junior and--Senior years, however, the stress scores were consistent across the two years.--Findings also showed that the students experienced high levels of physiological and--psychological symptoms. The main sources of stress identified in this study were--related to academic expectations, clinical experience, and interpersonal relationships.--The study findings suggest that nurse educators need to look at the stress--experienced by students and plan appropriate intervention strategies. Areas of--consideration include adequate planning of course assignments, providing timely--feedback on performance, and providing a supportive environment during clinical--experiences.

Past research has shown high levels of stress can lead to decreased learning, affect clinical performance, increase clinical errors, and threaten physical or psychiatric wellbeing. The primary responsibilities of nurse educators are to help students effectively cope with their initial stress and facilitate student learning by applying the knowledge they gain in the classroom to the clinical environment. To allow students the opportunity to integrate theory into practice, the use of high-fidelity human patient simulation is becoming more widely accepted in nursing education as an instructional methodology. This study demonstrated a relationship between the use of high-fidelity human patient simulation and the reduction of stress levels in novice nursing students that has not been previously reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of high-fidelity human patient simulation on the stress levels of associate degree novice nursing students prior to their first clinical experience. Fifty-five associate degree nursing students from one technical college tested the hypothesis that novice nursing students who receive practice on a high-fidelity simulator prior to their first clinical day will experience less stress and increased client system stability than those novice student nurses who do not. This study used a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest comparison group research design to examine self-reported stress levels on the Student Stress and Coping Inventory Clinical Experiences subscale (SSCI). Control group participants attended two clinical days in a skilled nursing facility on a long-term care unit. Intervention group participants attended a simulated clinical experience with a high-fidelity human patient simulator followed by a clinical day at the same skilled nursing facility as the control participants. The Betty Neuman Systems Model was used to investigate whether a simulated first day clinical experience will perform as a primary prevention as intervention method on system stability to reduce stressor reaction and protect the flexible line of defense for associate degree novice nursing students. Study results confirmed the hypothesis and revealed that intervention participants who did not report any experience in healthcare and participants who reported no employment in healthcare identified significantly lower levels of stress on their SSCI posttests compared to control group participants whose posttest stress scores increased. Preparation using a simulated first day clinical experience with a high-fidelity mannequin demonstrated to be a primary prevention as intervention method and increased novice nursing student system stability. Research findings confirmed a significant difference in overall mean stress scores between the intervention and control group participants who did not report any experience in healthcare and those who were not employed in healthcare. Control group participants reported higher stress scores following their initial clinical experience whereas intervention participants reported a decrease in stress following a simulated first day clinical experience and their first clinical day.

The highest scores domain was students' perception of learning and the lowest was for students' social self- perception. Educational environmental and styles of coping strategies were noted to be linked to evidence of distress. The lower percentage of stress level also may be associated with more positive perception in their educational environment and coping strategies that this population used. Therefore although the overall educational environment score of this college was observed to be one step below 'excellent', faculty should intensely study the deficiencies that had been identified in this report and improve the situation.

Guided by Tsai’s Theory of Caregiver Stress, this study examines whether a relationship exists between stress level and intensity of life experiences in 84 nursing students in Clarion University’s RN to BSN (n=51) and MSN programs (n=33). Participants were asked to complete the Perceived Stress Scale and Survey of Recent Life Experience reporting their stress levels and perceived stressors over the course of the previous month, as well as a short demographic survey. The six student participants were in the last semester of a three-year nursing program in a Montreal CEGEP. Three students reported this experience to be stressful, two described their experience as very positive and one described it as average. Despite different perceptions, all of the study participants identified a variety of stressors. These were classified under four thematic areas: 1) Learning environment, 2) Preparation for clinical and perception of self, 3) Effects of stress and anxiety, and 4) Coping skills. Participants felt that communication and the development of relationships with nurses and medical staff was difficult and stressful. Therefore, as students, they felt they did not belong on the team. Although participants described most of their teachers as approachable, several reported that the constant evaluation process, high and unrealistic expectations teachers had regarding students' knowledge and performance, and lack of autonomy to practice led to heightened states of stress and anxiety. Stress did not have an adverse effect on the performance of the clinical skills as reported by the students, but they acknowledged that it did affect their memory, retention and thinking process negatively. The study yielded new qualitative data on coping methods which students use in special situations in the clinical environments: a combination of emotion-focused and problem-focused coping methods. Emotion-focused methods were used more often. The findings have implications for improving learning and teaching practice and the environment of clinical experience for all concerned: nurse educators, nursing staff and teams, medical and management team and the students.

It is also a place where nursing students can experience stress which can have a negative impact on their learning. The purpose of this study was to explore nursing students' perceptions of and experiences with their coping efforts as they face stress associated with clinical practice. Lazarus and Folkmans' theory of stress and coping guided this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 undergraduate nursing students. Qualitative thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Four major themes emerged upon analysis: Learning about self, Social Support, Self-Care, and Clinical Instructors. Nursing students need clinical environments which let them face challenges and meet the responsibilities of nursing practice with support from clinical instructors (Emerson, 2007; Parker & Myrick, 2010). A non-punitive and respectful environment is essential for a student to learn and cope effectively with stressful situations. Clinical instructors play a significant role in the clinical practice of nursing students. Clinical instructors facilitate learning by helping students to overcome situational, knowledge-related or emotional stressors. Negative relationships with them can increase the amount of stress in students in their clinical practice. Whereas positive relationships with the instructors and the staff on the unit increase students' comfort, decrease stress, and enhance learning. This study yielded qualitative data on nursing students' views about and experiences with coping with the stress from their clinical practice. This study also provided valuable information regarding the clinical instructor's role in the coping process. The findings have implications for improving the clinical instructor's role in enhancing coping among nursing students with the stress that arises from clinical practice.

Book excerpt: Statement of Problem Nursing students experience high levels of stress (Beck, Hackett, Srivastava, McKim, & Rockwell, 1997), have been shown to be at increased risk for physical and psychiatric illnesses (Beck & Srivastava, 1991) and stress has been shown to increase dropout rates (O'Regan, 2005). No prior published studies that focus on the relationship between demographic variables and reported stress levels in nursing students have been published. Sources of Data Data was collected from a convenience sample of all nursing students currently enrolled at California State University San Marcos. Students completed an online survey that included demographic data, the Student Nurse Stress Index (SNSI) (Jones & Johnston, 1999), and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (Strahan & Gerbasi, 1972). Conclusions Reached Two independent variables, GPA (p=.001) and Study Time (p=.013) showed statistical significance in affecting the self-reported stress levels as measured by the SNSI.

Academic coaching can be implemented to reduce stress experienced by nursing students and aid students in attaining successful academic outcomes and a positive educational experience. The purpose of this descriptive comparative and correlational study was to explore the impact of academic coaching on junior-level baccalaureate nursing students’ perceived stress, students’ perceptions of the coaching relationship, the relationship between perceptions of the coaching relationship and perceived level of student stress, and the impact of academic coaching on students’ perceptions of academic success. Faculty coaches and student participants met bi-weekly for one academic semester. Students’ perceived stress was measured pre- and post-coaching. Student perceptions of the coaching experience and perceptions of the influence of academic coaching on academic success were evaluated post coaching. Survey data was analyzed to identify associations between academic coaching and perceived stress and student perceptions of the coaching relationship. Examination of survey data included analysis of themes and similarities between student perceptions of academic coaching and its influence on perceived academic success. Correlational data analysis was used to identify relationships between student perceptions of academic coaching and perceived stress. Students had positive perceptions of the coaching relationship and the majority of students perceived academic coaching as contributing to and/or influencing academic success. There was no significant change in perceived student stress after academic coaching. The relationship of students’ perceptions of the coaching relationship and level of stress was not statistically significant. The results of this research study broaden understanding of the impact of academic coaching on nursing students and potential interventions to assist nursing students to have a positive educational experience.
