Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The study was designed to compare self-perceptions of youth athletes and youth nonathletes. The components of Self- Perception include Scholastic Competence, Social Competence, Athletic Competence, Behavioral Conduct, Physical Appearance, and Global Self-Worth. The participants (N = 85) were eighth-grade students from a public magnet middle school in New England. The participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Self-Perceptions Profile for Children (SPPC; Harter, 2012), a 36-item 4-point Likert-style scale designed to measure the six components of self-perception. Six independent group t-tests were used to determine if differences existed between athletes and nonathletes for each of the six subscales of the SPPC. Additionally, a Spearman's Rho correlation test was used to determine the relationship between length of time spent in organized sport and selfperception scores of athletes. The researcher found that a difference in Athletic Competence existed between athletes and nonathletes. A positive relationship also existed between the length of time spent in sport and Social Competence scores of athletes.

Book excerpt: This study examined physical self-concept, global self-esteem, and athletic identity among former collegiate athletes. 308 former Division 1 NCAA collegiate athletes participated in the study. This study replicated findings that physical self-worth demonstrates a positive relation with global self-esteem. Athletic identity was shown to mediate the relation between physical self-concept and global self-esteem for former collegiate athletes. Athletic identity was also shown to mediate the relation between physical activity and physical self-concept. Athletic identity did not serve as a moderating variable for the entire sample, but was shown to moderate the relation between physical activity and physical self-concept for those no longer participating in their collegiate sport and those no longer identifying as an athlete. Athletic identity and global self-esteem demonstrated age-related differences. These findings suggest that there is some maintenance of athletic identity for many former collegiate athletes, and that identity remains influential in its association with physical self-concept.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to explore the role of athletic program participation in middle and junior high school students' self-perceptions of body image, body satisfaction and apparel fit satisfaction. A survey was used to assess the students' self-perception of individual body image, satisfaction with different areas of the body and satisfaction with apparel fit. The research also assessed the accuracy between the students' perceived body image on a body image scale and their 3D body scan image. By using 3D body scanning technology, body scan images were obtained to accurately determine the size and shape for male and female athlete and non-athlete middle and junior high school students. A total of 120 middle and junior high school students participated in this study; 81 were athletes and 39 were non-athletes. No statistically significant differences between athletes and non-athletes were discovered for self-perception of body image, body satisfaction, self-perception of body image using a body image scale and 3D body scan, apparel fit satisfaction, frequency of apparel alterations and difficulty purchasing apparel. Overall, the sample reported scores indicating important self-ideal congruities across all physical attributes as well as satisfaction with their bodies. Additionally, both athletes and non-athletes indicated overall dissatisfaction with the fit of their apparel. Neither athletes nor non-athletes reported a high frequency of apparel alterations or difficulty purchasing clothing in retail stores.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study was undertaken to assess body image and self-concepts in male and female adolescent cross-country runners. Runners were chosen as the study population because cross-country is a lean sport whereby the size of the body can impact performance. Participants were 175 high school runners including 93 boys (mean age 16 ±1.3 years; body mass index 20.4 ± 1.9) and 82 girls (mean age 15.7 ± 1.3 years; body mass index 20.3 ± 1.9). Participants completed a questionnaire packet comprised of a demographic questionnaire (including self-report of height and weight), the Body-Selflmage Questionnaire (BSIQ) to assess body image in nine different factors, and the Self- Perception Profile for Adolescents (SPPA) to assess self-concept in eight domains, plus global self-worth (self-esteem). The results showed that females were significantly less satisfied with a number of body image factors than males. Females also scored significantly less than males in the self-concept domains of athletic competence and physical appearance. Males and females rated different self-concept domains as the most important to them: Females valued close friendships as most important, while males valued job competence as nost important. Physical appearance and athletic competence were ranked relatively lower for both genders. On the other hand, the relationship of self- esteem to appearance-related factors or domains was stronger for females than for males; the females' self esteem was most closely related to physical appearance of all the eight domains. This correlation was significant for both sexes. The physical appearance domain ofthe SPPA correlated with the overall appearance factor ofthe BSIQ, with the association being stronger for females than for males. The females demonstrated more negative discrepancies than boys in many self-concept domains, suggesting that they were failing at aspects that were important in their lives. In spite of the sex differences, absolute scores obtained on the two instruments demonstrated favorable psychological profiles, not indicative of severe body image problems or eating disorders. However, these results question the different motives of the cross-country runners since athletic competence and physical appearance were ranked relatively low. These runners may not have been representative of serious distance runners. Implications from this study include that the gender differences between males and females, particularly with respect to appearance, need to be handled sensitively by coaches. Furthermore, the discrepancies in the female runners' self-concepts were present yet the females' competencies in the self- concepts were fairly high. This suggests that the girls in the study demonstrated perfectionist-like qualities in having high expectations in all aspects of their lives. Future research should address this notion further, since perfectionism has been recognized as a risk factor for eating disorders"--Document.
