Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the shortened, English-language version of the German volume published in 1989 and omits those contributions and passages that refer only to German laws, or which have little relevance outside Germany. It includes additional texts, especially on the relevant European norms and the canon of the Abwassertechnische Vereinigung [German Waste Water Technology Association] as well as the latest research and development reports. The result is a comprehensive overview of the technology currently available for wastewater management and systems plus the relevant norms, with special emphasis on maintenance, cleaning, inspection and reconstruction. A number of European systems are used to describe in detail pipe materials and connections, pipework-specific framework conditions and their changes since the development of modern drains and sewers in the 19th century. The book also lists causes and effects of various types of damage, and their assessment in terms of hydraulics, environmental relevance and construction, since this is a basic prerequisite for the choice of suitable rehabilitation measures and their implementation. Readers are thus not only provided with a comprehensive presentation of all internationally practised rehabilitation processes and their fields of application, but are also given advice on their selection, on the formulation of tenders, cost and cost efficiency.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the first of two volumes, gives a comprehensive treatment of the civil engineering work relating to sewers and emphasises the practical aspects of repair and renovation. A considerable amount of theoretical work already exists on this subject. However this book is unique in meeting the engineer's need for up-to-date information on the application of theory and incorporates some important recent developments in the field. The technical aspects of survey and access are dealt with in some detail and the book also provides fundamental data on hydraulics, structural assessment and the use of the Wallingford Storm Sewer Package.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE PREFACE Wastewater collection systems are dynamic, not static. There is no single maintenance method, equipment, or technique that works best. Keeping an open mind, trying new techniques and technologies benefits sewer system operators. No two collection systems are alike. Maintenance staffing, skill levels, equipment, budgets, age and complexity of the system make each agency unique. However, collection systems do have many traits and problems in common. Based on inventory and analysis, problems are identified. Defects may then be prioritized, and corrective maintenance operations put into effect. Preventive maintenance techniques can be applied to all collection systems. Preventive maintenance is cost-effective; it strives to prevent problems from occurring rather than reacting to difficult situations and "putting out fires." This book examines problems shared by all agencies: roots, grease, deterioration, hydraulic inefficiencies and structural defects. New solutions to age-old problems are applied: TV inspection and video interpretation, rehabilitation analysis and trenchless technologies. Computerized maintenance management and GIS softwares are discussed. Jetting, line cleaning and exciting developments in nozzle technology are included. Roots and chemical root control foam, wastewater control and grease are major topics as well. Wastewater Collection System Maintenance shares insights drawn from operator experience, trial and error, successes and failures in the field, interviews and years of research and studies. A user-friendly rating and evaluation system is explained and applied to field conditions. Equipment operation and maintenance, and "tricks of the trade" are also discussed. As cities grow, new systems are extended upstream from older sewers. Many of these core drainage basins are now under capacity and in need of capital improvement projects. There are approximately 600,000 miles of sanitary sewers in the country. Nationwide, there exists a huge backlog of sewer pipes that need rehabilitation. Replacement would cost many billions of dollars. Maintenance operators are entrusted with the care and feeding of an aging sewer infrastructure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual, Existing Sewer Evaluation and Rehabilitation, Second Edition, provides general guidance and serves as a source of information in the evaluation and rehabilitation of existing sewers. Recent technological advances, such as high resolution closed-circuit television, in addition to improved analytical methods and materials, make rehabilitation of existing sewers a cost-effective alternative to relief sewer construction. With these advances in mind, this manual explores three major topics: sewer evaluation and monitoring, sewer rehabilitation-methods and materials, and quality assurance. After a short explanation of the purpose and scope of the manual, chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 discuss techniques used for evaluation of existing sewers. The techniques covered are the general approach, methods of structural evaluation, and methods of infiltration and inflow evaluation. In addition, the impact of combined sewer overflow on pollution are described. Chapter 6 discusses sewer flow, quality monitoring, and sewer system hydraulics. Methods and materials used for pipeline rehabilitation are presented in chapters 7 and 8. The final chapter discusses the quality assurance of long-term performance in sewer rehabilitation. A general formulae section and glossary are appended.

Brauer, Ansgar: Bauingenieur, 18.09.1972-. Weitere Angaben Verfasser: Born on 3 November 1938 in Ströbitz/Cottbus and after graduating from the University for Civil Engineering in 1962, University-Prof. Dr.-Ing. D. Stein gathered practical and scientific experience in dam- and storage construction in Dresden, Gersdorf and Berlin. From 1975 to 1977 he gathered university-educational experience at the University for Engineering in Cottbus on the sector of "pre-fabrication and technikum". In 1970 he was awarded a doctorate externally at the University for Transportation "Friedrich List" in Dresden. In 1979, after emigrating to the Federal Republic of Germany, he found another working sphere at the Ruhr-University Bochum, where he was promoted as a professor on the sector of construction method technique in 1981; and in 1991 he was appointed to a professorship for the new teaching sector "pipeline construction, rehabilitation and maintenance", which had been founded by him. The research works supervised by him and the international expert's opinions created as a sworn technical expert deal with the planning, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation of all urban supply and disposal networks in the broadest sense. Since having been given his emeritus status in spring 2004, Prof. Stein now applies himself intensively to his engineering consultant office Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stein & Partner GmbH (www.stein.de), which was founded in 1993. The Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stein & Partner GmbH - in short S & P or Stein & Partner - is an innovation-orientated enterprise. Situated near the Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany), it operates successfully on the sectors of pipeline construction, pipeline maintenance and rehabilitation as well as environmental technology. Among S & P's fields of activity are: engineering (e.g. planning, structural calculation, operation and maintenance concepts, expert reports and consulting), research and development, new media (www.unitracc.de) as well as training and education. More than 150 publications, articles and especially the standard manual "Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Drains and Sewers", which has been published in its third edition, as well as the technical books "The Accessible Utility Tunnel" and "Trenchless Technology for Installation of Cables and Pipelines" prove his international scientific commitment.

Book excerpt: The aim of these recommendations is to harmonize and further develop the methods, according to which excavations are prepared, calculated and carried out. Since 1980, these have been drawn up by the working group for excavations at the German Society for Geotechnics (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Geotechnik) under the name EAB and are similar to a set of standards. All the main software programs in Germany are based on these recommendations. The recommendations help in designing and calculating excavation constructions, unifying approaches to loads and methods of calculation. Since they are based on an approved global safety concept, following these recommendations ensures the stability and usability of excavations and their individual components. Furthermore, they help to improve the profitability of excavation constructions. The result is a work of major importance for all experts concerned with the planning and calculation of excavations.
