Book excerpt: Global in scope, this original and thought-provoking collection applies new theory on legitimacy and legitimation to urban life. An informed reflection on this comparatively new topic in anthropology in relation to morality, action, law, politics and governance is both timely and innovative, especially as worldwide discontent among ordinary people grows. The ethnographically-based analyses offered here range from banking to neighbourhoods, from poverty to political action at the grassroots. They recognize the growing gap between the rulers and the ruled with particular attention to the morality of what is right as opposed to what is legal. This book is a unique contribution to social theory, fostering discussion across the many boundaries of anthropological and sociological studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, service quality, trust, corporate image and switching cost are mainly viewed as the primary determinants of repeat choice behavior. In the literature, according to many authors, switching costs have (1) financial switching cost, (2) procedural switching cost and (3) relational (psychological) switching cost. Each type also composed of multiple facets. The aim of this study is to determine customer switching costs the credit card market and to form a third-order measurement model and to examine the associations among switching cost., loyalty, service quality, trust and corporate image. Firstly we examined the concept of switching cost and determined all the facets. Secondly, the relationships among all the variables were analyzed by the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The findings from CFA show that the switching cost is explained by monetary loss, benefit loss, evaluation, learning, set-up, uncertainty and relationship loss cost. Also there is no significant association between customer loyalty and monetary loss and learning cost because of the competition in the Turkish credit card market. Uncertainty and relationship loss cost are associated with customer loyalty. On the other hand, the most important factors affecting customer loyalty are trust, perceived service quality and corporate image, respectively.

Book excerpt: Nowadays, protecting market share against rival firms is more important than ever due to the decline in market growth rate and the increase in the competition. The main requirement for protecting market share is to create loyal customers. Switching costs are one of the strategies for reaching this goal. Switching costs are important factors in terms of both banks and customers. Switching costs occur, when a customer prefers a different brand in his new purchasing decision process and they contain financial, procedural and psychological dimensions. In this study, the aim is to develop a third-order measurement model with all the dimensions. Such dimension as multi-dimensional switching costs is used to determine switching costs value of subscribers in Turkish credit card market. We also examined the existing studies in literature on switching costs with regard to credit cards. It may have been previously studied but in the literature we didn't come across any metrics for measuring the switching costs and perception costs of the customers in considering three dimensions of this structure or model. We developed a third-order measuring model and tested the third-order measurement model's validity and reliability and it was verified using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. We used a survey of switching costs and perception costs associated with the banks and credit card users. The survey was sent to 1020 credit card users. 450 users responded to the survey. A return rate of the survey was 45%. Psychological switching costs were found to be the most important factor.

Book excerpt: This book explores various approaches around the world regarding price term control, and particularly discusses the effectiveness of two major paths: ex ante regulatory and ex post judicial intervention. Price control and its limits are issues that affect all liberal market economies, as well as more regulated markets. For the past several years, courts in many different countries have been confronted with the issue of whether, and to what extent, they should intervene regarding price-related terms in standard form contracts – especially in the area of consumer contracts. Open price clauses, flat remunerations, price adjustment clauses, clauses giving the seller/supplier the right to ask for additional payments, bundling or partitioning practices, etc.: a variety of price related terms are used to manipulate customers’ choices, often also by exploiting their behavioral biases. The result is an unfavorable contract that is later challenged in court. However, invalidating a given price term in standard forms e.g. of a banking or utilities contract only has an inter partes effect, which means that in thousands if not millions of similar contracts, the same clauses continue to be used. Effective procedural rules are often lacking. Therefore, pricing patterns that serve to hide rather than to reveal the real cost of goods and services require special attention on the part of regulators. The aim of this book is to determine the various approaches in the world regarding price term control, and particularly to discuss the efficiency of both paths, ex ante regulatory and ex post judicial intervention. Thanks to its broad comparative analysis, this book offers a thorough overview of the methods employed in several countries. It gathers twenty-eight contributions from national rapporteurs and one supra-national rapporteur (EU) to the 2018 IACL Congress held in Fukuoka. These are supplemented by a general report presented at the same IACL Congress, which includes a comparative analysis of the national and supranational reports. The national contributors hail from around the globe, including Africa (1), Asia (5), Europe (17), the European Union (1) and the Americas (5).

Book excerpt: Since the Gezi uprisings in June 2013 and AKP's temporary loss of parliamentary supremacy after the June 2015 general elections, sharp political clashes, ascending police operations, extra-judicial executions, suppression of the media and political opposition, systematic violation of the constitution and fundamental human rights, and the one-man-rule of President Erdogan have become the identifying characteristics of Turkish politics. The failed coup attempt on 15th July 2016 further impaired the situation as the government declared emergency rule at the end of which a political regime defined as the “Presidential Government System” was established in July 2018. Turkey's New State in the Making examines the historical specificities of the ongoing AKP-led radical state transformation in Turkey within a global, legal, financial, ideological, and coercive neoliberal context. Arguing that rather than being an exception, the new Turkish state has the potential to be a model for political transformations elsewhere, problematizing how specific policies the AKP adapted to refract social dispositions have been radically redefining the republican, democratic and secular features of the modern Turkish state.
