Book Synopsis The Keats Brothers by : Denise Gigante
Download or read book The Keats Brothers written by Denise Gigante and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John and George Keats—Man of Genius and Man of Power, to use John’s words—embodied sibling forms of the phenomenon we call Romanticism. George’s 1818 move to the western frontier of the United States, an imaginative leap across four thousand miles onto the tabula rasa of the American dream, created in John an abysm of alienation and loneliness that would inspire the poet’s most plangent and sublime poetry. Denise Gigante’s account of this emigration places John’s life and work in a transatlantic context that has eluded his previous biographers, while revealing the emotional turmoil at the heart of some of the most lasting verse in English. In most accounts of John’s life, George plays a small role. He is often depicted as a scoundrel who left his brother destitute and dying to pursue his own fortune in America. But as Gigante shows, George ventured into a land of prairie fires, flat-bottomed riverboats, wildcats, and bears in part to save his brothers, John and Tom, from financial ruin. There was a vital bond between the brothers, evident in John’s letters to his brother and sister-in-law, Georgina, in Louisville, Kentucky, which run to thousands of words and detail his thoughts about the nature of poetry, the human condition, and the soul. Gigante demonstrates that John’s 1819 Odes and Hyperion fragments emerged from his profound grief following George’s departure and Tom’s death—and that we owe these great works of English Romanticism in part to the deep, lasting fraternal friendship that Gigante reveals in these pages.
Book Synopsis Wives - Mothers - Daughters - Widows by : Sue Appleby

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Cornwall has for centuries been the source of migrants to all parts of the world. This has generated a broad literature on Cornish emigration and the Cornish abroad, much of it concentrated on the better-known destinations of the USA, Australia, and South Africa; related to the international mining industry of the 19th century; and dominated by men and their stories. Appleby breaks the mould by examining the lives of female indentured servants, wives of mariners, miners, and missionaries, and ‘ladies of quality’, who, for many different reasons, spent time in the Caribbean. There has been a gathering tide of research and literature into the lives of Cornish women in recent years but, so far, less work has concentrated on the women of the Cornish diaspora, so this new book is a very welcome addition to that literature.” Dr Lesley Trotter, Honorary Research Fellow, Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter. Wives - Mothers - Daughters - Widows is the first book to examine the lives of Cornish women who left their homes to spend time in the Caribbean colonies.

Book Synopsis My Dearest Martha: The Life and Letters of Eliza Hillier by : Andrew Hillier
Download or read book My Dearest Martha: The Life and Letters of Eliza Hillier written by Andrew Hillier and published by City University of HK Press. This book was released on 2021-07-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For this brief moment, the two sisters could be ‘together in heart and affection’, and through such letters bridge the distance of empire.” We often learn about the commerce, diplomacy, and military campaigns of the British empire without reference to the intimate side of life in these times—the development of self, the position of women, and the importance of family. In this book, the story of empire, so often told from a man’s perspective, is given a unique vantage point through Eliza Hillier’s letters to her younger sister, Martha. Written largely from Hong Kong, Shanghai, England, and Siam, the letters allow us to become a member of her family and follow the daily tribulations associated with the life of a young British woman in the port cities of Asia. We are thus able to share Eliza’s experiences as she leaves home to embark on married life, starts and raises a family, grieves at the abrupt and tragic loss of her husband, Charles Batten Hillier, and then sets about re-building her life. At once a reflection on the daily components of empire, an entertaining narrative of familial relationships, and the story of one woman’s inner feelings, My Dearest Martha guides us through the vagaries of life for a family who were very much a part of imperial careering and missionary circles in East and Southeast Asia. The letters are complemented by images and commentary from the author, a descendant of Eliza, providing context and depth, which together give us a fuller picture of British colonial life in the mid-1800s from a perspective that will resonate with readers around the world.
