Book excerpt: The author writes this book with a concentration and an almost ascetic discipline which result in a clarity and purposefulness rare in any work and especially in a history. The book primarily tells what happened to English ecclesiastical life with 1509 and 1547, and how it happened. Reformation and schism are separated, and the 'supreme head of the Church of England' is separately explained. The division into chapters and the organization of the whole material is planned to clarify individually these three contrasting motives, which, during the reign of Henry VIII, maintained individuality. The chapters on the divorce, royal supremacy and the champions of Catholic unity, and the discussions of international policy build up with great interest and authority the role of the king. The chapters on the advanced party, on the Henricians and on dogma, with liberal but most purposeful use of biography, distinguish the heretical and schismatical strands. -- Back cover.

Book excerpt: The beginning the sixteenth century brought growing pressure within the Western Church for Reformation. The popes could not hold Western Christendom together and there was confusion about Church reform. What some believed to be abuses, others found acceptable. Nevertheless over the years three aims emerged: to reform the exactions of churchmen, to correct errors of doctrines and to improve the moral awareness of society. As a result, Western Europe divided into a Catholic South and Protestant North. Across the no man's land between them were fought the bitterest wars of religion in Christian history, until, gradually, the modern religious map of Europe took shape. In this, the third volume of the Penguin History of the Church, Professor Chadwick deals with the formative work of Erasmus, Luther, Zwingli and Calvin, and analyses the special circumstances of the English Reformation as well as the Jesuits and the Counter-Reformation. Previously published in the Pelican History of the Church series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you missing half the story about the last days? Virtually all attention these days is focused on the coming Antichrist—but he is only half the story. Many people are amazed to discover in Revelation 17 that there is also another mysterious character at the heart of prophecy—a woman who rides the beast. Who is this woman? Tradition says she is connected with the church of Rome. But isn’t such a view outdated? After all, today’s Vatican is eager to join hands with Protestants worldwide. “The Catholic church has changed” is what we hear. Or has it? In A Woman Rides the Beast, prophecy expert Dave Hunt sifts through biblical truth and global events to present a well-defined portrait of the woman and her powerful place in the Antichrist’s future empire. Eight remarkable clues in Revelation 17 and 18 prove the woman’s identity beyond any reasonable doubt. A provocative account of what the Bible tells us is to come.
