First published in 1950, it has been out Of print for several years. For the new edition, I have thoroughly revised the whole volume and have added three new chapters. The longest of these deals with the ministry at the time Of the Reformation. It supplements happily the interpretation of the Reformation Offered in the several chapters Of the first section. The two Others treat the contribution to Protes tant thought by Harnack and Barth. These chapters also will be we] comed, I hope, by the readers of this volume. They will strengthen, I trust, my argument on behalf Of theological liberalism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The ground which he has traversed has been often covered by scholars who have given it far greater research and more careful investiga tion. It is not for the critical reader that these pages are prepared, but to tell plainly and as concisely as possi ble the story of the great protest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reformation and Renaissance: Circa 1377-1610 Having been asked to give some account of the two great revolutionary movements of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries from the standpoint of the old religion, I have attempted in the following pages to represent the various aspects of the Reformation and the Renaissance in their relation to the Catholic Church and to the world at large, endeavouring also to show that while they remained distinct forces they sometimes joined issues and played each other's game. In the term Reformation I have included not only the Violent measures employed by the enemies of the Church to overthrow authority that was coeval with Christianity, but also the long and more or less effectual efforts within the Church, prior to the Protestant schism, to combat existing abuses; and finally the universal post-tridentine revival of Catholic life and work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Leaders of the Reformation The Reformation of the Sixteenth Century is the principal source of our civil and religious freedom. We are living in the era which it inaugurated, and are moulded by its influence. For this reason it deserves to be studied by all who are interested in the development of the Church and State. The author has not ventured to write a history of this eventful period. He has, however, made it the subject of many lectures, and of these a series is here presented. Though the best authorities have been consulted and freely quoted, the general purpose has been popular rather than scholastic. It has not been deemed necessary to burden the text with proofs and references. Of the work of the most distinguished leaders of the Reformation no more than a brief sketch has been attempted but men of less celebrity have been assigned to the position which is believed to be their due. It will be observed that there has been no dispo sitiou to exalt some men at the expense of others, and that subjects of controversy have not been prominently presented. It is believed that calm and dispassionate study of the lives of the Reform ers will prove that they were all pervaded by a common life; and that though their errors were numerous their purposes were exalted. When these facts are fully recognized, prejudice and ex elusiveness must pass away; and in the fullest sense of the prophecy, there will be one fold and one Shepherd.
