Book Synopsis The Decline of Sterling by : Catherine R. Schenk
Download or read book The Decline of Sterling written by Catherine R. Schenk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The demise of sterling as an international currency was widely predicted after 1945, but the process took thirty years to complete. Why was this demise so prolonged? Traditional explanations emphasize British efforts to prolong sterling's role because it increased the capacity to borrow, enhanced prestige, or supported London as a centre for international finance. This book challenges this view by arguing that sterling's international role was prolonged by the weakness of the international monetary system and by collective global interest in its continuation. Using the archives of Britain's partners in Europe, the USA and the Commonwealth, Catherine Schenk shows how the UK was able to convince other governments that sterling's international role was critical for the stability of the international economy and thereby attract considerable support to manage its retreat. This revised view has important implications for current debates over the future of the US dollar as an international currency.

Book Synopsis Picturing Reform in Victorian Britain by : Janice Carlisle
Download or read book Picturing Reform in Victorian Britain written by Janice Carlisle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did Victorians, as creators and viewers of images, visualize the politics of franchise reform? This study of Victorian art and parliamentary politics, specifically in the 1840s and 1860s, answers that question by viewing the First and Second Reform Acts from the perspectives offered by Ruskin's political theories of art and Bagehot's visual theory of politics. Combining subjects and approaches characteristic of art history, political history, literary criticism and cultural critique, Picturing Reform in Victorian Britain treats both paintings and wood engravings, particularly those published in Punch and the Illustrated London News. Carlisle analyzes unlikely pairings - a novel by Trollope and a painting by Hayter, an engraving after Leech and a high-society portrait by Landseer - to argue that such conjunctions marked both everyday life in Victorian Britain and the nature of its visual politics as it was manifested in the myriad heterogeneous and often incongruous images of illustrated journalism.
Book Synopsis Downhill from Devaluation by : Michael J. Oliver
Download or read book Downhill from Devaluation written by Michael J. Oliver and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The devaluation of 1967 and the float of 1972 have become two of the key cornerstones in the analysis of sterling under the Bretton Woods system. Sterling's fortunes between 1968 and 1972 have not been so well documented. This article uncovers new evidence about the pound for this period, including the British governments contingency plans for blocking the sterling balances as a means to negate the weakness of sterling following the 1967 devaluation, the discussions with the United States on the reform of the international monetary system, and the preparations made for floating the pound.

Book Synopsis British Weapons Acquisition Policy and the Futility of Reform by : Warren A. Chin
Download or read book British Weapons Acquisition Policy and the Futility of Reform written by Warren A. Chin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 2004. This incisive work reveals the causes of escalating costs and delays in British defence procurement from 1945 to the present. Tackling a complex subject in a straightforward and readable manner, it considers how successive British governments reacted to this problem, why they adopted the reforms they did and why these reforms failed to have any meaningful effect on the operation of this process. The study draws upon a number of disciplines such as economics, politics and science and engineering to provide a broad synthesis that allows the reader to understand the technicalities of the process. The conclusion reached is that there is no apparent solution to the problem of intergenerational costs of weapons, but that a key to controlling the growing cost of projects during their development lies in the construction of a more effective research and development strategy, a path followed by Margaret Thatcher's predecessors and one that is also being advocated today.
