Download or read book The Brilliant Deep written by Kate Messner and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brilliant Deep is the proud recipient of the ALA Notable Children's Books Award, the NSTA-CBC Best STEM Trade Books Award, the Junior Library Guild Selection and the ILA Teacher's Choices. All it takes is one: one coral gamete to start a colony in the ocean, one person to make a difference in the world, one idea to help us heal the earth. The ongoing conservation efforts to save and rebuild the world's coral reefs—with hammer and glue, and grafts of newly grown coral—are the living legacy of environmental scientist Ken Nedimyer, founder of the Coral Restoration Foundation. In telling the story of this sea conservation pioneer and marine life protector, Kate Messner and Matthew Forsythe create a stunning tribute to the wonders of nature and the power of human hope—a power even the smallest readers can access in their quest to aid our extraordinary planet. Recommended by experts for children who are reading independently and transitioning to longer books, The Brilliant Deep is perfect for the following reading categories: • Books for Kids Ages 5-9 • Children's Books for Kindergarten – 3rd Grade • Nonfiction Science Studies Education • Summer Reading

Download or read book Lasseter’s Reef written by Bill Decarli and published by Boolarong Biographies. This book was released on 2021-09-02 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fact or myth? Harold Bell Lasseter and his claim of finding a vast gold-bearing reef in Central Australia has continually been surrounded in mystery. Yet his ill-fated death in the Australian outback, where the land is unforgiving to the careless and the foolhardy, is relatively undisputed. Despite Lasseter taking secrets to a lonely desert grave in 1931, the story of the elusive gold reef has become a holy grail for explorers from near and far. One such explorer is Vietnam veteran Bill Decarli, who has spent the best part of forty years unravelling one of Australia’s greatest mysteries. On his maiden voyage to the outback in 1991, instead of heading towards Western Australia like other diehard explorers, Bill reversed his map and headed east towards Queensland. It was there that he struck upon the infamous gold reef, one that Lasseter had never laid eyes on, yet some how had been made aware of its existence. Based on significant new insights, and with a further nine trips to the reef, the key to putting all the pieces together, for Bill, was a man who barely left any trace of his own existence — until now. A story of adventurous hearts, honesty and resolve, in this new twist, Bill unearths how Lasseter’s claim was another man’s story, the exact location of the reef and how the reef stands to have a bright future.

Book excerpt: Major Sam Call, now retired from the Army, has joined LNMB Investigations owned by his friend David Lytle. David was instrumental in helping Sam uncover the identity of an escaped German POW, solve a war crime that had remained hidden for 45 years, and also bring home a soldier missing since 1945. IdentityPoint, a public records company, is a major player in the relatively new world of computerized public records; providing the government and private companies with reports on an individual's data; data which revealed everything from the person's birth to their death, and everything in between. One corporate officer believes others in IdentityPoint have been illegally benefiting from a string of acquisitions and hires LNMB to go undercover to seek the financial data to prove her suspicions. Along with David's long-time associate Bob, a small, unassuming but extremely resourceful man, Sam is immersed in a mesmerizing world of data and computers and quickly discovers the immense power the company and the data have over the lives of typical citizens. While using the company's powerful reporting tools, Sam unknowingly alerts the F.B.I., and Sam once again finds himself the target of those who would wish to silence anything Sam has to say, as well as silencing Sam-permanently. Set in Georgia, British Virgin Islands, and Washington D.C., Very Public Data, explores the world of public records, secret organizations, world of personal identity systems and those that build them and those who abuse them. Very Public Data unveils both the positive and negative power of public data, and while this is a tale of corruption, murder, and deception, it is also a celebration of the love of a man and a woman, the unbreakable bond of soldiers, and the undying strength that honor brings to the human spirit.
Book Synopsis Leave No Man Behind by : George Galdorisi
Download or read book Leave No Man Behind written by George Galdorisi and published by Zenith Press. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the birth of combat aircraft in World War I and the early attempts to rescue warriors trapped behind enemy lines, Leave No Man Behind chronicles in depth nearly one hundred years of combat search and rescue (CSAR). All major U.S. combat operations from World War II to the early years of the Iraq War are covered, including previously classified missions and several Medal-of-Honor-winning operations. Authors George Galdorisi and Tom Phillips (both veteran U.S. Navy helicopter pilots) highlight individual acts of heroism while telling the big-picture story of the creation and development of modern CSAR. Although individual missions have their successes and failures, CSAR, as an institution, would seem beyond reproach, an obvious necessity. The organizational history of CSAR, however, is not entirely positive. The armed services, particularly the U.S. Air Force and Navy, have a tendency to cut CSAR at the end of a conflict, leaving no infrastructure prepared for the next time that the brave men and women of our armed forces find themselves behind enemy lines. The final chapter has not yet been written for U.S. combat search and rescue, but in view of the life-saving potential of these forces, an open and forthright review of U.S. military CSAR plans and policies is long overdue. Beyond the exciting stories of heroic victories and heartrending defeats, Leave No Man Behind stimulates debate on this important subject.
