Book Synopsis The Psychology of the Athenian Hoplite by : Jason Crowley
Download or read book The Psychology of the Athenian Hoplite written by Jason Crowley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the Classical period, the Athenian hoplite demonstrated an unwavering willingness to close with and kill the enemies of Athens, whenever and wherever he was required to do so. Yet, despite his pugnacity, he was not a professional soldier; he was an untrained amateur who was neither forced into battle nor adequately remunerated for the risks he faced in combat. As such, when he took his place in the phalanx, when he met his enemy, when he fought, killed and died, he did so largely as an act of will. By applying modern theories of combat motivation, this book seeks to understand that will, to explore the psychology of the Athenian hoplite and to reveal how that impressive warrior repeatedly stifled his fears, mustered his courage and willingly plunged himself into the ferocious savagery of close-quarters battle.

Book Synopsis The Symposium in Context by : Kathleen M. Lynch
Download or read book The Symposium in Context written by Kathleen M. Lynch and published by ASCSA. This book was released on 2011 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first well-preserved set of sympotic pottery which served a Late Archaic house in the Athenian Agora. The deposit contains household and fine-ware pottery, nearly all the figured pieces of which are forms associated with communal drinking. Since it comes from a single house, the pottery also reflects purchasing patterns and thematic preferences of the homeowner. The multifaceted approach adopted in this book shows that meaning and use are inherently related, and that through archaeology one can restore a context of use for a class of objects frequently studied in isolation. Winner of the 2013 James R. Wiseman Book Award given by the Archaeological Institute of America.

Book Synopsis The So-called Nonsense Inscriptions on Ancient Greek Vases by : Sara Chiarini
Download or read book The So-called Nonsense Inscriptions on Ancient Greek Vases written by Sara Chiarini and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first extensive survey of the ancient Greek painters’ practice of writing nonsense on vases, The So-called Nonsense Inscriptions on Ancient Greek Vases by Sara Chiarini provides a systematic overview of the linguistic features of the phenomenon and discusses its forms and contexts of reception. While the origins of the practice lie in the impaired literacy of the painters involved in it, the extent of the phenomenon suggests that, at some point, it became a true fashion within Attic vase painting. This raises the question of the forms of interaction with this epigraphic material. An open approach is adopted: “reading” attempts, riddles and puns inspired by nonsense inscriptions could happen in a variety of circumstances, including the symposium but not limited to it.
