This volume redresses that balance. In Stone Tools, renowned lithic analysts employ explicitly theoretical constructs to explore the archaeological record and use the lithic database to establish its points. Chapters discuss curation, design theory, replacement of stone with metal, piece refitting, and projectile point style.

Book excerpt: As the world’s population continues to grow and economic conditions continue to improve, more solid and liquid waste is being generated by society. Improper disposal methods can not only lead to harmful environmental impacts but can also negatively affect human health. To prevent further harm to the world’s ecosystems, there is a dire need for sustainable waste management practices that will safeguard the environment for future generations. Waste Management: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications is a vital reference source that examines the management of different types of wastes and provides relevant theoretical frameworks about new waste management technologies for the control of air, water, and soil pollution. Highlighting a range of topics such as contaminant removal, landfill treatment, and recycling, this multi-volume book is ideally designed for environmental engineers, waste authorities, solid waste management companies, landfill operators, legislators, environmentalists, policymakers, government officials, academicians, researchers, and students.

Book excerpt: This practical guide shows how to reduce consumption and fight waste through recycling, and how to create new from old. With the help of this book, the concept of conservation through recycling can become a natural part of everyday life. The book is divided into three sections—"Action and Ideas" looks at policy issues and legislation; "The World of Recycling" examines other countries' recycling practices, and serves as a resource of ideas to share worldwide; and the "Recycler's A-Z" contains up-to-date information on a wide range of household and office items. It stresses the need to reduce the quantity of materials bought, and gives creative ideas for their reuse. A resource section lists suppliers, equipment organizations, and contacts. The book is endorsed by the National Recycling Forum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concurrent Engineering (CE) is based on the premise that different phases of a product’s lifecycle should be conducted concurrently and initiated as early as possible within the Product Creation Process (PCP). It has become the substantive basic methodology in many industries, including automotive, aerospace, machinery, shipbuilding, consumer goods, process industry and environmental engineering. CE aims to increase the efficiency of the PCP and reduce errors in later phases while incorporating considerations for full lifecycle and through-life operations. This book presents the proceedings of the 22nd ISPE Inc. (International Society for Productivity Enhancement) International Conference on Concurrent Engineering (CE2015) entitled ‘Transdisciplinary Lifecycle Analysis of Systems’, and held in Delft, the Netherlands, in July 2015. It is the second in the series ‘Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering’. The book includes 63 peer reviewed papers and 2 keynote speeches arranged in 10 sections: keynote speeches; systems engineering; customization and variability management; production oriented design, maintenance and repair; design methods and knowledge-based engineering; multidisciplinary product management; sustainable product development; service oriented design; product lifecycle management; and trends in CE. Containing papers ranging from the theoretical and conceptual to the highly pragmatic, this book will be of interest to all engineering professionals and practitioners; researchers, designers and educators.

This book was released on 2007-07-31 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The procurement of public ICT equipment is forecast to increase from £2.7 billion in 2005-06 to £4.1 billion by 2010-11 (an increase in volume from 1.7 to 2.6 million units). It is therefore important that public bodies understand how they can generate value from disposals, whilst being clear about their statutory and ethical responsibilities. However best practice in this area is unclear. This report is the first attempt to identify the potential for getting value from ICT disposal, whilst considering the wider environmental costs. One of the findings is that on average the public sector keeps equipment for just under 5 years old when disposal becomes a net cost. The commercial sector typically disposes of equipment after 3 years when there is still some residual value. If this had been done by public bodies the estimated saving in 2005-06 would have been £70 million.
