This book was released on 1988 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to explore the reception of German literature in the United States from 1864 to 1918, a period of great significance for both the U.S. and Germany in terms of sociopolitical developments that exerted their influence upon the production of literature. However, it is not intended to account for the entire scope of the reception of German belles lettres; rather, the book confines itself to exploring the use of those texts that were read in the classrooms of U.S. high schools and, above all, institutions of higher learning. An introductory chapter offers statistical surveys of textbooks published in the U.S., as such statistics are absolutely essential to ascertain both the availability and degree of popularity of certain texts that were exclusively intended for perusal in the classroom. The following chapters present texts dating from the late Middle Ages to the first decades of our century. Apart from establishing which texts were most frequently used, the chapters endeavor to evaluate the respective texts in terms of their intrinsic and extrinsic literary qualities.

Book excerpt: Whereas the cultural and political influence of the U.S. on Europe and Germany has been researched extensively, the impact of more than 6 million German immigrants on U.S.-American history and culture has received far less scholarly attention. Therefore this volume addresses a wide range of areas in which a German presence has been manifesting itself in the U.S. for more than three centuries. Among the disciplines involved in this broad analysis are linguistics, literary studies, history, economics, musicology as well as media studies and cultural studies.
Book Synopsis Practicing Progress by : Richard E. Schade
Download or read book Practicing Progress written by Richard E. Schade and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2007 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essay reads an Enlightened and modern critique of progress in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. With numerous references to other operas and texts, and with a storyline that emphasizes inevitable, yet mutable aspects of human nature, Cosi presents an ambivalent picture of the ways in which even the most disinterested and best-informed attitude toward the past can affect the future. At the same time, the opera seems to embrace the notion of freedom of choice without rejecting tradition or repetition. The essay also comments on the performance of Cosi in Zurich in 2000, conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt, who often works with authentic period instruments.

Book Synopsis "The New York Times" Facing World War II by : Erika J. Fischer
Download or read book "The New York Times" Facing World War II written by Erika J. Fischer and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1990 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1941, the Pulitzer Prize Board at the School of Journalism of Columbia University gave a special award to the 'New York Times' «for the public educational value of its foreign news report, exemplified by its scope, by excellence of writing and presentation, and supplementary background information, illustration, and interpretation» during 1940. This book contains great parts of the award-winning exhibit of one of the leading newspapers of the world. The material presented not only demonstrates the world-wide correspondence of the 'New York Times' one year before the U.S. became involved in World War II, it also gives a fascinating insight into the number and names of all foreign correspondents and the costs for transmitting the articles world-wide by cable exactly fifty years ago.
