Book excerpt: One of the world’s top experts in behavioral finance offers innovative strategies for improving 401(k) plans. Half of Americans do not have access to a retirement saving plan at their workplace. Of those who do about a third fail to join. And those who do join tend to save too little and often make unwise investment decisions. In short, the 401(k) world is in crisis, and workers need help. Save More Tomorrow provides that help by focusing on the behavioral challenges that led to this crisis inertia, limited self-control, loss aversion, and myopia—and transforms them into behavioral solutions. These solutions, or tools, are based on cutting edge behavioral finance research and they can dramatically improve outcomes by, for example, helping employees: -Save, even if they aren’t ready to do so now, by using future enrollment. -Save more by showing them images of their future selves. -Save smarter by reshuffling the order of funds on the investment menu. Save More Tomorrow is the first comprehensive application of behavioral finance to improve retirement outcomes. It also makes it easy for plan sponsors and their advisers to apply these behavioral tools using its innovative Behavioral Audit process.

Book excerpt: From the Executive Summary: This study investigates the pattern of personal savings in Canada, which developed during the 1970s, from two perspectives. First, it identifies those economic and institutional conditions of the 1970s that were different from the trends of the 1960s, and that therefore may have accounted for the change in savings behaviour of Canadian households. These factors are verified in a model of personal savings which incorporates economic and institutional factors specific to the 1970s into a traditional theory of savings. Second, the study provides an explanation of the difference in savings patterns between Canada and the United States through a comparison of personal income tax laws in each country.

Book Synopsis Financing the Future by : Arthur Donner
Download or read book Financing the Future written by Arthur Donner and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1982-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study first published in 1982, Arthur Donner examines capital market issues that have significant economic impact and are affected by public policy. In addition to interest rates, inflation energy concern, the author also examines the financing of pension funds, the state of housing finance and the interaction between inflation and capital markets. Donner finds that at the root of all capital market problems are the same factors: high inflation, high and volatile interest rates, and saving and investment distortions caused by the interaction of inflation and the tax system. Financing the Future is an immediate and detailed analysis of the state of Canadian capital markets in the early 1980s.
Book Synopsis The Global Findex Database 2017 by : Asli Demirguc-Kunt

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2011 the World Bank—with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—launched the Global Findex database, the world's most comprehensive data set on how adults save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk. Drawing on survey data collected in collaboration with Gallup, Inc., the Global Findex database covers more than 140 economies around the world. The initial survey round was followed by a second one in 2014 and by a third in 2017. Compiled using nationally representative surveys of more than 150,000 adults age 15 and above in over 140 economies, The Global Findex Database 2017: Measuring Financial Inclusion and the Fintech Revolution includes updated indicators on access to and use of formal and informal financial services. It has additional data on the use of financial technology (or fintech), including the use of mobile phones and the Internet to conduct financial transactions. The data reveal opportunities to expand access to financial services among people who do not have an account—the unbanked—as well as to promote greater use of digital financial services among those who do have an account. The Global Findex database has become a mainstay of global efforts to promote financial inclusion. In addition to being widely cited by scholars and development practitioners, Global Findex data are used to track progress toward the World Bank goal of Universal Financial Access by 2020 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The database, the full text of the report, and the underlying country-level data for all figures—along with the questionnaire, the survey methodology, and other relevant materials—are available at www.worldbank.org/globalfindex.

Book Synopsis Wealth, Disposable Income and Consumption by : R. Tiff Macklem
Download or read book Wealth, Disposable Income and Consumption written by R. Tiff Macklem and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report develops a measure of aggregate private sector wealth in Canada that includes financial, physical, and human wealth, and examines the ability of this wealth measure to explain aggregate consumption. The relationship between consumption and wealth is explored both to gauge the usefulness of the wealth measures developed and to improve upon empirical consumption models for Canada. The study augments the standard EC consumption model with a comprehensive measure of wealth, thus partly bridging the gap between life cycle-permanent income consumption equations and the more empirically motivated EC consumption models based on disposable income.
