Slavery alone has inspired the slaveholders with the wish to break loose from the just authority of their government, and it alone now hinders their return. Cherishing the guilty dream of a slave empire which shall surpass the United States both in extent and power, Mr Jefferson Davis has said to this sin of slavery, "Evil, be thou my good. By thee at least Divided empire with the North I hold; By thee and more than half perhaps shall reign, As men ere long and this new world shall know." His colleagues have shared in his ambition. But when the slaveholders are once subdued, and emancipation effected, the South will have no longer any motive for separation. As this rebellion has been unprovoked, and therefore criminal (Rom. xiii. 1-4), Christians cannot wish it success, because they cannot wish the triumph of crime. Third - Because if President Lincoln does not succeed, the fetters of these four millions and their progeny to endless ages, so far as the mind can scan, will be riveted and confirmed, and because; if this should occur through the want of our sympathizing aid, the curse of God will rest upon us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Rebellion: Letters on the American Rebellion; 1860 to 1865, &C I am glad to hear that you are about to publish your letters and articles on the American War. They will perhaps be too many for one volume, but you can make a selection from them, preserving all the most important. I told my friends in Birmingham that they had a great advantage over other towns, because they had you as a teacher on the great American question. I think I read all your letters as they appeared, and I believe and say it with out flattery, that nothing more exact, on the great Struggle was written in England during the War. The facts were correct, your knowledge complete, and your faith in the final issue of the conflict never failed you for an instant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rebel America: The Story of Social Revolt in the United States American people, is to indulge necessarily in a somewhat arbitrary limitation of subject-matter. Using the term in its broadest sense, such a story might begin with the rebellions of Roger Williams and of Anne Hutchinson in the 16305 against the theocratic tyrannies of the Pilgrim Fathers, or in another and possibly more accurate sense with the uprisings of the Virginia frontiersmen in 1676. Besides these, its roster of heroes would include, certainly, the names of Patrick Henry and Thomas Paine, of Daniel Shays, Henry Thoreau, Elijah Lovejoy, and John Brown. There is no decade in American history since the founding of the first Colonies which has not had its gestures of protest and rebellion against some specific social injustice or outworn code - religious, political, economic, or cultural. For the purposes of this book, however, the term social revolt is used to describe primarily the activities of those groups which have aimed at the complete transformation - by whatever means - of the whole social order. Rebel America is the story of our social revolutionaries and of those allied movements of protests with which their activities have, at various times, overlapped. At the Opening of the great contest, we began to record its most impor tant events, and have, from time to time, corrected the record from official and authoritative sources. We have taken time. It was not our ambi tion to issue the first History of the war, but to wait the full development of particular events before we recorded them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rebellion Record, a Diary of American Events, Vol. 1: With Documents, Narratives, Illustrative Incidents, Poetry, Etc.; Supplement For the most tri ing reasons, and sometimes for no conceivable reason at all, His Majesty the King of England has rejected laws of the most salutary tendency. The abolition of domestic slavery is the great object of desire in those colonies, where it was unhappily introduced in their infant state. But, previous to the en franchisement of the slaves we have, it is neces sary to exclude all further inportations from Africa. Yet our repeated attempts to effect this, by prohibitions and by imposing duties which might amount to prohibition, have been hitherto defeated by His Majesty's negative, thus preferring the immediate advantage of a few British corsairs to the\]asting interests of the American States, and to the rights of human nature deeply wounded by this infamous prac tice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Character of the Rebellion, and the Conduct of the War We, the people of the State of South Carolina, in convention assem bled, do declare and ordain, and it is hereby declared and ordained, That the ordinance ordained by us in convention on the 23d day of May, in the year of our Lord 1788, whereby the Constitution of the United States of America was ratified, and also all acts and parts of acts of the General Assembly of this State ratifying amendments of the said Constitution, are hereby repealed; and that the Union now subsisting between South Carolina and other States under the name of 'the United States of America' is hereby dissolved. It will be observed that it appears as a simple repeal, or attempt to repeal, the ordinance by which the people of the State adopted the Constitution of the United States, thereby uniting with the people of the other States in the establish ment of a general government over the whole. This attempt to repeal an act which is in its very nature irrepealable has been followed substantially in the other seceding States, with such difference Of formula as the difference of circumstances under which they entered into the Union required. We shall have occasion to note hereafter, on the supposition that the repeal could be legally and constitutionally Operative, that some of the immrtant incidents and consequences which have been claimed as attaching to it are but mere unjust demands and exactions upon the United States.
