Book excerpt: A Turing Award-winning computer scientist and statistician shows how understanding causality has revolutionized science and will revolutionize artificial intelligence "Correlation is not causation." This mantra, chanted by scientists for more than a century, has led to a virtual prohibition on causal talk. Today, that taboo is dead. The causal revolution, instigated by Judea Pearl and his colleagues, has cut through a century of confusion and established causality -- the study of cause and effect -- on a firm scientific basis. His work explains how we can know easy things, like whether it was rain or a sprinkler that made a sidewalk wet; and how to answer hard questions, like whether a drug cured an illness. Pearl's work enables us to know not just whether one thing causes another: it lets us explore the world that is and the worlds that could have been. It shows us the essence of human thought and key to artificial intelligence. Anyone who wants to understand either needs The Book of Why.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Carmichael here proposes a convincing solution to a perplexing problem in biblical studies--the order and arrangement of the Deuteronomic laws. He shows that Deuteronomy is not a haphazard collection of fragments, but rather a carefully constructed, coherent literary work with a definite purpose. Through his analysis, many of the peculiar features of the code are made intelligible, for example, the relationship between the laws and earlier stories, sagas, and historical narratives. Opening up a new approach to the interpretation of the laws, this book makes an important contribution to the understanding of biblical material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Level III (Grades 11-13) The hm Learning and Study Skills Program: Level III was designed to provide an introduction to learning and study skills for high school juniors and seniors and beginning college students through a series of activity-oriented units. It is structured on the assumption that an activity-oriented lesson is the most effective instructional strategy for the teaching of study skills: more succinctly, that “learning by doing” is the best way “study smart.” Learning and study skills are important for learning. They are methods and ways of doing things that help make learning easier. Understanding how to study can also facilitate learning by assisting students as they complete assignments correctly and efficiently during a specified period of time. Just like any other skill, knowing how to learn and study proficiently must be learned and practiced over time. The Program has been designed to help students learn more efficiently and effectively.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Gaskin presents a work in the philosophy of language. He analyses what is distinctive about sentences and the propositions they express—what marks them off from mere lists of words and mere aggregates of word-meanings respectively. Since he identifies the world with all the true and false propositions, his account of the unity of the proposition has significant implications for our understanding of the nature of reality. He argues that the unity of the proposition is constituted by a certain infinitistic structure known in the tradition as 'Bradley's regress'. Usually, Bradley's regress has been regarded as vicious, but Gaskin argues that it is the metaphysical ground of the propositional unity, and gives us an important insight into the fundamental make-up of the world.
