Book Synopsis African Pilgrimage by : Retief Müller

Book excerpt: Years after the end of Apartheid South Africa remains racially polarized and socially divided. In this context pilgrimage and travelling rituals serve to help those who often find themselves at the bottom end of the social ladder to make sense of their world. This book describes a South Africa that is made up of a number of different fragmented worlds. The focus is on the Zion Christian Church, one of the largest religious movements in southern Africa, and a good example of indigenized African Christianity. Pilgrimage plays an important role in reintegrating some of those fragmented worlds into something approaching wholeness. This book tells the story of how the enduring ritual of pilgrimage is transforming African religion, along with the lives of ordinary South Africans.

Book Synopsis To Live in Fear by : Anthony de V. Minnaar
Download or read book To Live in Fear written by Anthony de V. Minnaar and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1980s the independent homeland of Venda in the Far Northern Transvaal has experienced a dramatic increase in witchcraft-related violence. The area became riddled by a sense of fear which was centred on issues pertaining to witchcraft, in particular the burning of witches and the murder for medicine. This study examines this violence with specific reference to the worldview of the Venda. An understanding of the issues surrounding gender as well as the pervasive beliefs in the supernatural are essential in order to grasp the role played by witches and traditional healers in Venda society. The study is divided into five sections. The first is a brief historical background followed by an examination of their traditional beliefs and customs. The third deals with the role that witchcraft plays in Venda society. Here an attempt is made to define witchcraft beliefs and the form they take. The fourth section deals with the issue of witchburning and the role that gender plays in its occurrence. A final section examines the role that witchcraft beliefs played in the political unrest which swept Venda at the time.

Book excerpt: In this fascinating and accessible book, W.D. Hammond-Tooke takes a critical look at anthropology and anthropologists and examines the uneasy relationship between anthropological scholarship and national politics in a fundamentally divided and rapidly changing society. Imperfect Interpreters is an account of seventy years of professional anthropological study in South Africa. It is not a history of university departments or a who's who of the academic community. Rather it is a critical (and often very personal) examination of the protagonists, the theoretical ideas that guided their researches, and, especially their relationships to those in power.

Book Synopsis Traditional Authority and Democracy in Southern Africa by : Franka Marina D'Engelbronner-Kolff
Download or read book Traditional Authority and Democracy in Southern Africa written by Franka Marina D'Engelbronner-Kolff and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centre for Applied Social Sciences in Namibia held a major regional workshop to examine the role of traditional authorities in today's rapidly transforming societies of southern Africa. History has taught that customary laws and values that continue to be widely accepted do not disappear with the promulgation of new laws. Modern states of southern Africa adhere to democratic, constitutional and human rights principles which are seen as offering greater protection for the individual; but some people might feel that this is an imposition of alien concepts and values that threaten their survival and identity. Traditional leaders are still active, but how do their powers and duties relate to modern democratic constitutional processes? These are the issues examined in fifteen papers, as relating to Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
