Book Synopsis Texas Devils by : Michael L. Collins
Download or read book Texas Devils written by Michael L. Collins and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Rangers have been the source of tall tales and the stuff of legend as well as a growing darker reputation. But the story of the Rangers along the Mexican border between Texas statehood and the onset of the Civil War has been largely overlooked—until now. This engaging history pulls readers back to a chaotic time along the lower Rio Grande in the mid-nineteenth century. Texas Devils challenges the time-honored image of “good guys in white hats” to reveal the more complicated and sobering reality behind the Ranger Myth. Michael L. Collins demonstrates that, rather than bringing peace to the region, the Texas Rangers contributed to the violence and were often brutal in their injustices against Spanish-speaking inhabitants, who dubbed them los diablos Tejanos—the Texas devils. Collins goes beyond other, more laudatory Ranger histories to focus on the origins of the legend, casting Ranger immortals such as John Coffee “Jack” Hays, Ben McCulloch, and John S. “Rip” Ford in a new and not always flattering light. In revealing a barbaric code of conduct on the Rio Grande frontier, Collins shows that much of the Ranger Myth doesn’t hold up to close historical scrutiny. Texas Devils offers exciting true stories of the Rangers for anyone captivated by their legend, even as it provides a corrective to that legend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tribute to the rivalry the New York Rangers had with the Boston Bruins during the decade that Emile Francis ran the club. Growing up, these two teams are what defined hockey for me and the team was not simply a city or a sweater or a jersey, it was the players. As Mr. Francis himself told me, "Every time we played it was a war. That was the greatest rivalry I've ever seen." I wrote this book for the fans of both teams, hoping that it would bring back some great memories from a time when the game was a lot different than it is today.

Book excerpt: The Texas Rangers may not always win, but they’re usually really exciting. Now you can read about them in the completely original Sports by the Numbers series. The Rangers have managed four playoff appearances heading into 2011, and became the A.L. champs in 2010. In all, the club has finished over .500 just 18 times. But it’s more than made up for any lack of success in the win column with great players, amazing moments, crazy characters, tremendous plays, and wild games. Nolan Ryan’s first bid at win number 300 failed, but late-inning heroics saved the day. Oddibe McDowell and Bengie Molina have something in common. Michael Young has racked up a few hits in Arlington, and Mickey Rivers did as well. All these stories and so much more can be found in a unique format that provides 250 numbers, with each telling a story about Ranger history: facts, anomalies, records, coincidences, and enthralling lore and trivia from the legends, stars, and even the forgotten players. This book isn’t just for the diehard Rangers fan. It’s for every fan who enjoys watching the Rangers and wants to learn more about their favorite team.

This is a "movie" about a group of friends that turn to a life of crime due to circumstances out of their control. Their life of crime was not killing and mayhem. They needed money so they stole it from drug dealers. As time moved on from high school to college they were beginning to be watched by federal agents. Unable to catch the group breaking any laws the federal agents decide to use the group to their advantage. Leaving "bread crumbs" for the group to follow and complete assignments that the laws of the United States do not allow for federal agents to participate in. Their connections to the underworld make them an invaluable source when terror strikes and all eyes are looking the other way due to the "red tape" of our nations laws and procedures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tools and anecdotes to reframe aging from the bestselling author of Work as a Spiritual Practice and Aging as a Spiritual Practice. Aging is a journey: a decades-long adventure of new opportunities and surprises. For many men, the decline in virility and power that accompanies age can be a tough pill to swallow. When these fall away, how do we make sense of who we are? What does it mean to be a man? Drawing from research, interviews, and personal stories, Every Breath, New Chances shows readers how to turn toward the changes associated with aging and to reevaluate losses and transitions as new avenues for joy, self-discovery, renewal, and growth. Delving into topics such as divorce, single living, retirement, and encore careers, each chapter includes a contemplative practice called Deep Mind Reflection to help readers navigate the fears and aspirations that come along with changes in relationships and work. This book addresses the more challenging realities associated with illness, substance abuse, and mortality, while empowering readers to compassionately embrace next steps and spiritual preparations for their final decades of life. This book does not proffer tools for staving off an inevitable part of life; rather, it offers frameworks and strategies for peacefully embracing it.
