Book excerpt: The air in the Pullman was hot and, despite the mechanical contrivances built into the coach to prevent such a contingency, the dust from the right-of-way persisted in filtering through crevices. Even the electric fans futilely combated the heat; their droning hum bespoke terrific revolutions which did not materially lessen the discomfort of the occupants of the coach; and the dry, dead dust of the desert, the glare of a white-hot sun, the continuing panorama of waste land, rolling past the car windows, afforded not one cool vista to assuage the torture of travel. For hours after leaving Kansas City, several of the passengers had diligently gazed out of the windows. But when they had passed the vast grass plains and had entered the desert, where their eyes met nothing but endless stretches of feathery alkali dust, beds of dead lava, and clumps of cacti with thorny spire and spatula blade defiantly upthrust as though in mockery of all life-the passengers drew the shades and settled down in their seats to endure the discomfort of it all

The morality is classic: good wins over bad, but not before bad has a real go at making it the reverse.

Here are four more great western novels: MANHUNT WEST, by Walker A. Tompkins ... Fleeing a posse, Cleve Logan boards a riverboat loaded with outlaws. Hands are dealt in a desperate game -- and Death will take the last trick! THE RENEGADE HILLS, by Allan K. Echols ... Saddle up -- and ride hell-bent-for-leather down the trail to a hidden valley -- but keep your guns loose in your holsters, 'cause you're riding to an outlaw showdown in the Renegade Hills! LAST-CHANCE RANGE, by Dean Owen ... Byrd Elkhart called the Territory his private range. He strung his barbed wire across forty miles of it, and the other ranchers just stood by with their tails between their legs. But then a different breed of man showed up in the person of Clay Janner, of Texas -- and he was going to drive his scrawny herd over the range even if he had to turn the whole Territory into a six-gun shambles! POWDER SMOKE, by Jackson Gregory ... "Double pay," Bart Warbuck told his gunmen, "and give hundred more to the one who gets Jeff Cody!" -- It was as simple as that if you were Warbuck, had 30 killers on your payroll, and made the law whatever you wanted it to be. But it was hard to take if you were young Cody, and if the only gun you could rely on was the one in your belt. And if you alone could stop Bart Warbuck! If you enjoy this volume of classic Westerns, don't forget to search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press Megapack" to see the 220+ other entries in this series, including not just historical fiction, but mysteries, adventure, science fiction, fantasy, horror -- and much, much more!

Book excerpt: Mounting his horse he rode away to enjoy the cigar, happy that the winter was nearly over. There was a feeling in the air that told of Spring, no matter what the calendar showed, and Johnny felt unrest stirring in his veins. When Johnny felt thus exuberant things promised to move swiftly about the bunk-house.When far enough away from the ranch houses he stopped to light the cigar, but paused and, dropping the match, returned the "Maduro" to his pocket. He could not tell who the rider was at that distance, but it was wiser to be prudent. Riding slowly forward, watching the other horseman, he saw a sombrero wave, and spurred into a lope. Then he squinted hard and shook his head."Rides like Tex Ewalt—but it ain't, all right," he muttered. Closer inspection made him rub his eyes. "That arm swings like Tex, just th' same! An' I did n't take more'n a couple of swallows, neither. Why, d—n it! If that ain't him I 'm going' to see who it is!" and he pushed on at a gallop. When the faint hail floated down the wind to him he cut loose a yell and leaned forward, spurring and quirting. "Old son-of-a-gun 's come back!" he exulted. "Hey, Tex! Oh, Tex!" he yelled; and Tex was yelling just as foolishly.

Book excerpt: "The Log of a Cowboy" is an account of a five-month drive of 3,000 cattle from Brownsville, Texas, to Montana during 1882 along the Great Western Cattle Trail. The book is considered by many to be literature's best account of cowboy life. "Reed Anthony, Cowman: An Autobiography" is the fascinating story of the protagonist and how he became a successful rancher. "The Wells Brothers: The Young Cattle Kings" tells the story of two brothers who are broke and want to sell their father's ranch until one day everything changes. "A Texas Matchmaker" a man makes it big in Texas. "The Outlet" another cowboy story with a detailed account of how to herd cattle in a true cowboy fashion. Andy Adams (1859–1935) was an American writer of western fiction and was born in Indiana. Since childhood Andy used to help his parents with the cattle and horses on the family farm. Due to this Andy's works have been lauded widely for his first hand and authentic portrayal of the life of a cowboy unlike his contemporaries like Owen Wister who romanticised it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first limited American printing in 1928, "Recollections of a Western Ranchman" has been largely unavailable and, even when found, affordable only by collectors. Herein is Captain French's original volume in a reader's edition, the story of a man who lived through the wildest years of the New Mexico/Arizona border country to leave us a frontier memoir with a human voice. In the midst of the final astonishing stand of Geronimo and his renegades, French displays a perceptive and balanced admiration for both the soldiers and the Apache tribe. At the siege of Elfego Baca, the author deftly delineates the hero from the bullies. When the outlaw Black Jack steals his horses, the Captain delightedly steals them back. And nobody has written better of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch than French. Finally, his descriptions of ranch life and the Southwest wilderness are those of a natural raconteur who still held to the facts. Never the hero, though often heroic, French saw it all, with balance, perception, and a droll British wit.

Book excerpt: "You bet I 'm a-stayin'," responded Tex. "Is that Lanky comin'?" "Hey, Lanky!" yelled Johnny, standing up and waving the approaching horseman towards them. "Pronto! Tex 's come back!" Lanky's pony's legs fanned a haze under him and he rammed up against Tex so hard that they had to grab each other. Everybody was talking at once and so they rode towards the bunk-house, picking up Billy on the way. "Where's Hopalong?" demanded Tex. "Married! H-l he is!" A strange look flitted across his face. "Well, I 'm d-d! An' where 's Red?" Johnny glanced ahead just in time to see Lee Hop sail around a corner of the corral, and he replied with assurance, "Red 's th' other side of th' corral."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE fine morning in the fall of '64 Alder Gulch rolled up its shirt sleeves and fell to the upheaving, sluicing, drifting, and cradling of the gravel. It did not feel exactly like old-fashioned everyday work to the muddy, case-hardened diggers. Each man knew that by evening he would see the level of dust rise higher in his long buckskin gold-bags. All this made for the day when he could retire to the green East and marry some beautiful girl-thereafter having nothing to do but eat pie and smoke fragrant cigars in a basking sunshine of no-work. Pie up at Kustar's bake-shop was now one dollar a pie, and a pipe full of molasses and slivers was the best to be had in the market. Life was hard at Alder in those days-it was practical; and when its denizens became sentimental, it took these unlovely forms, sad to relate. Notwithstanding the hundreds who toiled in the gulches, Virginia City itself held hurrying crowds, -Mormon freighters, pack trains, ponies, dirty men off the trails, wan pilgrims, Indians, Chinese, and almost everything else not angelic. Into this bustle rode Rocky Dan, who, after dealing faro all night at the "Happy Days" shebang, had gone for a horseback ride through the hills to brighten his eyes and loosen his nerves. Reining up before this place, he tied his pony where a horse-boy from the livery corral could find it. Striding into that unhallowed hall of Sheol, he sang out, "Say, fellers, I've just seen a thing out in the hills which near knocked me off'en my horse. You couldn't guess what it was nohow. I don't believe half what I see and nothin' what I read, but it's out thar in the hills, and you can go throw your eyes over it yourselves." "What? a new thing, Dan? No! No! Dan, you wouldn't come here with anything good and blurt it out," said the rude patrons of the "Happy Days" mahogany, vulturing about Rocky Dan, keen for anything new in the way of gravel.

Book excerpt: The keen-eyed, cool-headed, and fearless men (Kit Carson, Jim Bridger, Buffalo Bill Cody, Big Foot Wallace, and Captain Jim Cook, among others) who were pivotal personalities for more than half a century in the almost ceaseless task of clearing the way for and guarding the lives and properties of explorers, emigrants, and settlers in the West, are an extinct type of pioneer, Accounts of the heroic deeds of this handful of men, however, remain today as indelible records that dramatize the melting away of this country’s vast frontiers.

Book excerpt: The fifty empty freights danced and rolled and rattled on the rough road bed and filled Jericho Pass with thunder; the big engine was laboring and grunting at the grade, but five cars back the noise of the locomotive was lost. Yet there is a way to talk above the noise of a freight train just as there is a way to whistle into the teeth of a stiff wind. This freight-car talk is pitched just above the ordinary tone-it is an overtone of conversation, one might say-and it is distinctly nasal. The brakie could talk above the racket, and so, of course, could Lefty Joe. They sat about in the center of the train, on the forward end of one of the cars. No matter how the train lurched and staggered over that fearful road bed, these two swayed in their places as easily and as safely as birds on swinging perches. The brakie had touched Lefty Joe for two dollars; he had secured fifty cents; and since the vigor of Lefty's oaths had convinced him that this was all the money the tramp had, the two now sat elbow to elbow and killed the distance with their talk. "It's like old times to have you here," said the brakie. "You used to play this line when you jumped from coast to coast."
