Book Synopsis The Cultural Politics of Opera, 1720-1742 by : Thomas McGeary

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the intersection of the world of opera, literature and partisan politics to show how Italian opera was put to use in the 'culture wars' of the day. This last of a trilogy of books on opera and politics in Britain examines the cultural politics of opera during the ministerial reign of Sir Robert Walpole from 1720 to 1742. The book explores the intersection of the world of opera, literature, and partisan politics to show how Italian opera - with its associations with the court, ministry and Britain's social-political elite - was put to use in the 'culture wars' of the day: how Italian opera was used for partisan political advantage; how political work could be accomplished by means of opera. It shows that attacks on opera had ulterior targets. The book surveys a range of often overlooked verse and prints to show how critique or satire of opera were a means for oppositional writers to delegitimize the Walpole ministry. Polemicists framed opera as a consequence of the corruption, luxury and False Taste generated by Walpole's ministry. It closes in the watershed year 1742: Handel had produced the last of his Italian operas the previous year, Walpole fell from power, and Alexander Pope published the last book of his Dunciad project.

Book excerpt: Thomas Armstrong vows only the loss of his faculties could ever convince him to take Amelia Bertram under his care during her father’s absence from England. Sadly, that loss does occur… the moment Lady Amelia publicly states that rumors of his exalted sexual prowess are more fable than fact. Responding like any man with an ounce of pride would, he picks up the gauntlet she threw down on the ballroom floor. After the death of her mother, Amelia Bertram is further devastated by the withdrawal of her father’s love. To survive the double heartbreak, she walls off her emotions. Now, her social faux pas finds her sharing a roof with the very man who took her place in her father’s affections…the man her father hopes one day to call son. In the seclusion of his country estate, Thomas glimpses in Amelia a vulnerability buried beneath a mountain of jealousy and pain. In turn, she discovers the ton’s ‘golden Greek god’ is more than the sum of rumor and innuendo. Soon a fire ignites between them not even a deluge from the Thames can extinguish. Can they set aside their plans—his for revenge, hers to escape—to forge a love powerful enough to surmount his pride and crumble the walls surrounding her heart? *Reissue. Book excerpt: From the author of Courting Scandal comes a Regency romance celebrating the witty and romantic world that fans of Georgette Heyer have fallen in love with. Phaedra Gillian, the spinster daughter of a vicar, is quietly content to manage the chores in the household she shares with her father and tend to the needs of the less fortunate in their small village. When she discovers the body of a man who’s been badly beaten and robbed on the road near their cottage, her compassionate nature compels her to take him in and nurse him back to health. But sheltered as she is from the depravities of the London ton, she’s dismayed to learn that the ruggedly handsome Hardcastle is a notorious rake and scoundrel—and a man who stirs unfamiliar and dangerous feelings of physical longing within her. Lord Hardcastle has led a debauched and dissolute life, taking pleasure from women at his whim and shrewdly breaking the fortunes of lesser men in the gambling dens. While on his way to collect a debt from his latest victim at the card table, he’s beset by highwaymen and left for dead, only to be saved by an angelic creature as beautiful as she is virtuous. Captivated by the lovely Phaedra and shamed by her pure-hearted goodness, he’s nonetheless drawn to thoughts of seduction and concocts a fiendish scheme to coax her to his bed. As Hardcastle skillfully leads her from genuine affection to mounting desire and Phaedra finds her resolve weakening, she must struggle to defend her virtue against the promise of a deeply tempting pleasure. And in a bold gamble that will change both their lives, Phaedra agrees to wager her innocence against Hardcastle’s dishonorable ways—as both come to realize that a true and lasting love hangs in the balance and rests on the turn of a card.

Book Synopsis Architects and Architecture of London by : Kenneth Allinson
Download or read book Architects and Architecture of London written by Kenneth Allinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-09-24 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architects and Architecture of London is a visual, highly illustrated guide to London’s greatest historic buildings and the lives of the architects who designed them. Read about the architectural forefathers of London, such as Inigo Jones and Sir Christopher Wren, Nicholas Hawksmoor, Robert Adam and John Nash, Butterfield and Street, Blomfield and Lutyens. Learn about those who, in the twentieth century, have helped to form the London we now know, right up to familiar names such as Rogers and Foster. And then there are the others who, in amongst the great and remembered architects, stand as the forgotten majority: talented architects such as Arthur Davis, who designed the Ritz hotel. In the constantly changing patterns of London’s architecture, why do some buildings stand as testament to their architect(s), while others obscure their names from history? The book is organised by architect, to provide an easy point of reference for today’s designers and students and all those interested in the architectural history of London. Architects and Architecture of London illuminates the city’s two thousand year architectural history, through the lives and works of historic architects who remain salient and significant in London’s contemporary architectural geography. What the press said about Ken Allinson's London's Contemporary Architecture: An Explorer's Guide: 'Highly recommended . . . the book is crammed with maps and colour pictures with clear explanations about the design of the buildings.' Evening Standard 'The perfect accompaniment to a walk around the capital.' Homes and Gardens
