Book excerpt: An epistolary novel set on a fictional island off the South Carolina coastline, 'Ella Minnow Pea' brings readers to the hometown of Nevin Nollop, inventor of the pangram 'The Quick Brown Fox Jumps Over the Lazy Dog'. Deified for his achievement in life, Nevin has been honored in death with a monument featuring his famous phrase. One day, however, the letter 'Z' falls from the monument, and some of the islanders interpret the missing tile as a message from beyond the grave. The letter 'Z' is banned from use. On an island where the residents pride them-selves on their love of language, this is seen as a tragedy. They are still reeling from the shock when another tile falls. And then another... In his charming debut, first published in 2001, Mark Dunn took readers on a journey through the eyes of Ella Minnow Pea, a young woman forced to create another clever turn of phrase in order to save the islanders’ beloved language.

Book Synopsis Many Subtle Channels by : Daniel Levin Becker
Download or read book Many Subtle Channels written by Daniel Levin Becker and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Main description: What sort of society could bind together Jacques Roubaud, Italo Calvino, Marcel Duchamp, and Raymond Queneau-and Daniel Levin Becker, a young American obsessed with language play? Only the Oulipo, the Paris-based experimental collective founded in 1960 and fated to become one of literature's quirkiest movements. An international organization of writers, artists, and scientists who embrace formal and procedural constraints to achieve literature's possibilities, the Oulipo (the French acronym stands for 0workshop for potential literature0) is perhaps best known as the cradle of Georges Perec's novel A Void, which does not contain the letter e. Drawn to the Oulipo's mystique, Levin Becker secured a Fulbright grant to study the organization and traveled to Paris. He was eventually offered membership, becoming only the second American to be admitted to the group. From the perspective of a young initiate, the Oulipians and their projects are at once bizarre and utterly compelling. Levin Becker's love for games, puzzles, and language play is infectious, calling to mind Elif Batuman's delight in Russian literature in The Possessed. In recent years, the Oulipo has inspired the creation of numerous other collectives: the OuMuPo (a collective of DJs), the OuMaPo (marionette players), the OuBaPo (comic strip artists), the OuFlarfPo (poets who generate poetry with the aid of search engines), and a menagerie of other Ou-X-Pos (workshops for potential something). Levin Becker discusses these and other intriguing developments in this history and personal appreciation of an iconic-and iconoclastic-group.

Download or read book The Missing Ink written by Philip Hensher and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Philip Hensher realized that he didn't know what a close friend's handwriting looked like ("bold or crabbed, sloping or upright, italic or rounded, elegant or slapdash"), he felt that something essential was missing from their friendship. It dawned on him that having abandoned pen and paper for keyboards, we have lost one of the ways by which we come to recognize and know another person. People have written by hand for thousands of years— how, Hensher wondered, have they learned this skill, and what part has it played in their lives? The Missing Ink tells the story of this endangered art. Hensher introduces us to the nineteenth-century handwriting evangelists who traveled across America to convert the masses to the moral worth of copperplate script; he examines the role handwriting plays in the novels of Charles Dickens; he investigates the claims made by the practitioners of graphology that penmanship can reveal personality. But this is also a celebration of the physical act of writing: the treasured fountain pens, chewable ballpoints, and personal embellishments that we stand to lose. Hensher pays tribute to the warmth and personality of the handwritten love note, postcards sent home, and daily diary entries. With the teaching of handwriting now required in only five states and many expert typists barely able to hold a pen, the future of handwriting is in jeopardy. Or is it? Hugely entertaining, witty, and thought-provoking, The Missing Ink will inspire readers to pick up a pen and write.
Download or read book This Is Me written by Julie Adams and published by . This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Is Me is a new book created by women, for women. A book which will move and inspire them. It began when photographer Julie Adams asked women and their children to come into her studio - which was always set up by the beach in surf clubs and pavilions - and be photographed in their swimsuits. The idea? To celebrate the female body, individuality and self-love. None of the images Julie has captured in this book have been retouched. They're raw, real and most importantly, relatable. It's not easy stepping into a photographic studio and putting yourself in the spotlight. It's confronting and it takes courage. Yet hundreds of women did exactly this. Featuring a mix of women from all over the world, This Is Me captures the journeys of hundreds of girls and women who open up about some of the issues they've faced throughout their lives. Anorexia, bulimia, cancer, endometriosis, mastectomies and more. This book is for every woman who has ever had a moment of selfdoubt, for every woman who has ever questioned herself. It's for every mother who wants to foster self-love and acceptance in their daughter. It captures the strength of women and reminds us of the power of coming together to stand up for something we believe in.

Download or read book 10 Mississippi written by Steve Healey and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playful but ominous, 10 Mississippi reads like a game of hide-and-seek set in America's rising floodwaters of text and technology. Fluid, lively, and referential, 10 Mississippi samples language from many cultural tributaries, performing sequels of celebrated twentieth-century poems, darkly riffing on advertising slogans, tongue twisters, formulaic news reports, and everyone's favorite twenty-six-letter sentence, "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Like the proverbial river that is never the same twice, Healey's poems channel the constant transformation of the modern world and embrace the human drama in all its absurd variety.
