Book Synopsis A New Economic Theory of Public Support for the Arts by : Arnaldo Barone
Download or read book A New Economic Theory of Public Support for the Arts written by Arnaldo Barone and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the arts receive public support? Can the arts survive in a modern capitalist society? Can economics shed light on the nature of public support, and whether there is a rationale for public intervention? This book undertakes to examine these questions as it explores the ways government and public resources are used to support the arts. This book applies a Veblenian approach to understanding economic development to investigate public support for the arts in an effort to determine whether this approach can elucidate economic rationales for public support. Divided into three parts, the first provides basic information on public support for the arts by surveying support in the United States and Australia. Part two includes a neoclassical overview of the topic while part three presents Veblen’s ideas on economic development. This book will be of interests to researchers concerned with cultural and institutional economics, as well as political economy.
Book Synopsis American Military History Volume 1 by : Army Center of Military History
Download or read book American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Book Synopsis A Translation and Interpretation of Horace’s Iambi by : Andy Law
Download or read book A Translation and Interpretation of Horace’s Iambi written by Andy Law and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace’s book of seventeen iambi (by convention called ‘Epodes’) contains some of the most complex and controversial poetry of his entire career. This new interpretation exposes a poet in the throes of the torment of writing. Horace crafts an artwork which reveals the agony of expressing agony. He struggles to find the words as he gives voice to the anticipation of grief. The poet’s inner demons conspire against him. Anything that could go wrong, does go wrong. At the end we realise that Horace might have never wanted to write this book in the first place. But the fate of this writer is to be forever persecuted by his own writing. Horace’s iambi are methodically stitched together. Meter, intertextuality, wordplay, and theme combine strategically to provide an utterly compelling and vivid watercolor in words. It is a work of art which is able to hold its place amongst any top tier poetry, in any language, in any era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1950, when he commissioned the first edition of The Armed Forces Officer, Secretary of Defense George C. Marshall told its author, S.L.A. Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.
