The fins are seven in number, namely, one dorsal of eighteen rays, two ventrals of nine rays each, one anal of seventeen rays, two pectorals of eighteen rays each, and the tail or caudal fin of eighteen rays. The eyes are placed on the sides of the head, about the middle of its length, the iris being of a silvery-white colour, and the pupil black. We shall continue it another year on the same plan, and with increased efl'orts to make it what the farmer needs. We shall be gratified if most of our present subscribers make up their minds to patronize us the next year: if so, they may, if they please, forward their subscriptions as early as convenient, say by the middle of December. If they do not patronize the work, we shall esteem them just as well. Whenever we find it is not wanted by a' sufficient number to support it, we shall stop it short at the close of the year; for we have something else to. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quarterly Journal of Agriculture, Vol. 7: June, 1836-March, 1837 So far back as 1575, -as we are informed by the Reverend Mr Townsend in his Travels through Spairi, ' a schedule of ques tions had been addressed to all the prelates and corregidors of that country, by Philip IL, a copy of which he had men at Bar celona. A report was required on no less than fifty-seven heads, relating chiefly to geography, natural and civil history, agricul ture and mineralogy, together with several others purely statis tical. It is evident from these queries, that Philip wished to gain a knowledge of the internal state of his kingdom but Mr Townsend was not able to find out any papers containing the corresponding answers; and, as no notice of the inquiry is taken by any of the historians of the period, it is probable that the scheme was never generally followed out. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Quarterly Journal of Agriculture, Vol. 6: June 1835 March 1836 The inhabitants of the northern and southern parts of the island of Great Britain have, during more than two centuries, been the subjects of the same king. With the exception of Wales and the Scottish Highlands, they have spoken the same language, and they have professed the same Protestant Christian faith. They both about the same period, under the influence of the principles of Christianity, created by law a compulsory assessment for the relief of their poor. The results of their legislation have been different, in a degree that must afford much subject of speculation to the philosopher, and of instruction to the statesman and the moralist. It would prove unsuitable to this publication, to enter into a detail of the various enactments framed in England and Scotland for the purpose of levying and administering a fund for the support of the poor. It may prove more useful to advert concisely to the prominent features of each of the systems, together with the effects which they have produced. Indeed, were we to give here a detail of enactments, we should have little to say comparatively with regard to Scotland. The avowed Statistical Account of Scotland does not contain these details, which are undoubtedly the most valuable portion of statistical knowledge. We hope the new Statistical Account, which is announced to he in progress under the pa. Tronage of the Church of Scotland, will present us with this useful information. The Schoolmasters, for a small remunera tion, with the assistance of the clergy, could ascertain the arable extent; the wooded extent; the extent of pasture land; the number of farms, with the extent of each; the number of work ing horses, and the number of regular farm-servants, in everv parish. In the absence of this knowledge. We must make an approximation only by supposition. In the Report to the county of Forfar, regarding the pro jected railway along Strathmore. Mr Stevenson, civil-engineer, took the arable land of only three miles on both sides of the rail way, and made his calculation of the probably disposable quan tity of agricultural produce which might be obtained for trans port at 5000 tons. The length of the valley from Forfar to be. Yond Cupar in Angus, twenty miles, being the same as stated by Mr Stevenson, we have taken the breadth at twelve miles.
