Sensing Health: Bodies, Data, and Digital Health Technologies analyzes popular digital health technologies as aesthetic experiences to understand how these devices and platforms have impacted the way individuals perceive their bodies, behaviors, health, and well-being. By tracing design alongside embodied experiences of digital health, Kressbach shows how these technologies aim to quantify, track and regulate the body, while at the same time producing moments that bring the body’s affordances and relationship to the fore. This mediated experience of “health” may offer an alternative to biomedical definitions that define health against illness. To capture and analyze digital health experiences, Kressbach develops a method that combines descriptive practices from Film and Media Studies and Phenomenology. After examining the design and feedback structures of digital health platforms and devices, the author uses her own first-person accounts to analyze the impact of the technology on her body, behaviors, and perception of health. Book excerpt: Offline racial health and health care disparities have been well documented and researched. However there has not been as much research into how these offline disparities have translated into online environments. Specifically, this study examines health websites, with a focus primarily on WebMD.com, that have become ubiquitous to the process of obtaining health information which has become self-propelled by the consumer. The model of health care where by the medical professional serves a patient their knowledge in a one-way model has largely been phased out in favor of a fluid exchange in which patients also bring medical knowledge and information to the table. Overwhelmingly, the information that the patient contributes comes from cyber research from websites such as WebMD.com. The Health 2.0 movement has furthered the expectation of patients to be proactive members of their health care who should research their conditions, symptoms, and treatments in addition to seeking medical professionals advice. Health 2.0 is predicated on users data input into online health care environments. Users interact with each other to exchange information and provide medical support to each other in what seems to be a radical departure from a traditional paternalistic model of health care that helps to reinforce institutional racism that perpetuates racial health and health care disparities. However examining a health website such as WebMD.com reveals that not only has cyberspace not created a radical egalitarian arena for health information exchange, health care websites have largely perpetuated the same model of health care information exchange that information exchange in cyberspace in general and Health 2.0 specifically attempts to circumvent. Using Michel Foucault’s idea of the medical gaze, I analyzed WebMD.com as a site in which patients can learn the medical gaze and thus procure medical knowledge the same way that was previously limited to those entering medical school. As such this project shows how offline racial health care disparities are perpetuated through discourses of race and health on WebMD.com and how these discourses become a precursor to the Health 2.0 movement.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aimed to investigate the direct and indirect pathways between body mass and three indicators of morbidity -- health conditions, disability, and self-rated health status -- and how these associations differed across birth cohorts. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, a nationally representative longitudinal sample of adults age 51 or older, I used latent growth curve modeling to investigate the association of body mass on morbidity for five cohorts. Latent growth curve models allow for changes in body mass, health conditions, disability, and self-rated health over several waves of data to be assessed. To determine if the influence of education on health has declined, I also stratified each cohort by educational attainment groups. The results show that starting body mass is positively associated with starting health conditions; no other pathway examined was significant for all cohorts. In the three youngest cohorts, higher starting body mass was associated with worse self-rated health. Changes in body mass over time were not significantly associated with changes in self-rated health over time for the two youngest cohorts, perhaps indicating that adults at older ages do not perceive higher body mass as detrimental to overall well-being. Education was a significant predictor of body mass and self-rated health for all cohorts. When cohorts were stratified based on educational attainment, adults with at least some college had fewer health conditions than their less educated peers in all cohorts except the youngest cohort. The relationship between the rate of change in body mass and the rate of change in health conditions was not significant for the most educated group in the youngest cohort. However, higher starting body mass resulted in worse self-rated health regardless of cohort or education. Despite inconsistent findings, the results potentially support an expansion of morbidity because the onset of illness does seem to be occurring at younger ages. The effect of education on body mass and health was mostly consistent across cohorts. Stratifying the data by educational attainment suggests that the youngest and best educated cohort has not benefited from the increased level of education relative to the older cohorts in the study.
