Book excerpt: A good quality of life during the retirement years is a goal shared by most if not all people. In this study, the researcher examined the quality of life through the indicators of health income, marital status, family roles, education and living conditions. This research explored the effect that retirement has on a retiree's quality of life. The study examined the quality of life experienced by "early" retirees and "regular age" retirees. This research utilized a purposive convenience sample of seven "early" retirees and seven "regular age" retirees. The retiree participants in this study include two racial backgrounds; black and white, males and females, 55 years of age or older. Fourteen in-depth face-to-face interviews of the participants were conducted. Their responses were recorded, analyzed, and compiled. The quality of life among each participant interviewed was evaluated on activities, freedom to pursue personal interest and health, etcetera. At the time of this study, the respondents had been retired, regardless of age at retirement, from one to thirteen years. Most had been retired for over five years. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of the respondents returned to work after retirement. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The research objectives are three-fold: firstly, to study the existing social security and its new pension scheme for government and enterprise employees; secondly to study the relationship of variables of the retirees’ personal qualifications on the quality of life between the government and enterprise employees; and thirdly to inquire into the suggestions for improving the new pension scheme for a better quality of life for government and enterprise employees. Mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) are employed to collect the data. The 400 government and enterprise employees in Nanning city were the sample of the quantitative research. For the qualitative research, 3 policy directors from the Department of Human Resources and Social Security of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and two people from different sub-bureaus, as well as 3 directors of the salary sector from different enterprises in Nanning city, were interviewed. Six case studies were conducted. The result of research reveals that there is no difference in the quality of life overall between government-retried employees and enterprise-retried employees. However, there are differences in some respects, i.e. financial situation, spiritual achievement, freedom and life control, social relationships, responsibility for family, living in good surroundings.

Are the elderly enjoying retirement in those extended years with good quality of life, or, are they simply alive? Using data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the Consumption and Activities Mail Survey (CAMS), this study contributes to the literature by presenting empirical evidence on how individuals spend time in retirement. The results show that retirees on average do not spend their time significantly different throughout retirement. Most life tasks such as reading the paper or magazines, listening to music, playing sports or exercising, visiting others, and house cleaning are similar among retirees in different age groups. We also present evidence that retirees on average experience a spike in medical expenses late in retirement. We compare systematic withdrawal strategies with and without health costs risk quantifying the impact on portfolio sustainability.

A convenience sample of 150 retired men and women age 65 or older was recruited to take part in the study. This study concluded that there were significant differences in quality of life (QOL) based on age; however, gender, educational level, and previous occupational differences were not significant. In addition, as to continuing education, there were significant differences based on age, educational level, and previous occupation. Gender difference was not significant. Subjects preferred informal continuing education more than formal. Formal continuing education did not significantly relate to QOL, but some types of informal continuing education and content areas of continuing education did. Some recommendations for educators, administrators at senior living facilities, and researchers are offered.

Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations.
