Book Synopsis The Indians of the Nipmuck Country in Southern New England, 1630-1750 by : Dennis A. Connole

This book was released on 2007-01-23 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North American Indian group known as the Nipmucks was situated in south-central New England and, during the early years of Puritan colonization, remained on the fringes of the expanding white settlements. It was not until their involvement in King Philip's War (1675-1676) that the Nipmucks were forced to flee their homes, their lands to be redistributed among the settlers. This group, which actually includes four tribes or bands--the Nipmucks, Nashaways, Quabaugs, and Wabaquassets--has been enmeshed in myth and mystery for hundreds of years. This is the first comprehensive history of their way of life and its transformation with the advent of white settlement in New England. Spanning the years between the Nipmucks' first encounters with whites until the final disposal of their lands, this history focuses on Indian-white relations, the position or status of the Nipmucks relative to the other major New England tribes, and their social and political alliances. Settlement patterns, population densities, tribal limits, and land transactions are also analyzed as part of the tribe's historical geography. A bibliography allows for further research on this mysterious and often misunderstood people group.

Download or read book The Records of Oxford, Massachusetts written by Mary DeWitt Freeland and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This impeccably prepared guidebook teaches us how to find ancestors on both the Maine and New Brunswick sides of the Upper Saint John River Valley, a region that ultimately became home to the indigenous Maliseets, Acadians, French-Canadians, Irish, a few Scots, and a few (mostly English) Loyalists. The extant records of the valley (found in both local and distant archives) extend from 1792 to the 20th century, and, following his historical introduction, Mr. Findlen devotes the bulk of his narrative to an inventory of them. The researcher will find separate chapters devoted to each of the following record categories: church registers (probably the most valuable of all records), vital records, marriages, cemetery records, censuses, land records, will and probate documents, newspapers, as well as the various record repositories themselves.

The book takes you on a fascinating fact laden trip through time of the people of East Brimfield and what is now its Lost Village. The interesting narrative incorporates how it prospers through the Industrial Revolution, the stage and trolley days on into the 20th century, and survived the Great Depression. The authors document the village's eventual demise at the hands of mother nature and public policy. They describe life as it was, and explain how the sinking of the Titanic was a pivotal part of East Brimfield's history. The authors describe the beautiful environment the land held for those who lived there. The book includes accounts of hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and other unusual events.
