Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public School Geography In view of the limited time given to geography in our schools, this treatise has been made as concise as possible, without limiting its usefulness as a work of reference. This is not only desirable but necessary on account of the large type used in the test and the space given to pictorial illustrations. Enough that is permanent may be found to engage the at tention of the most intelligent child during the portion of school days allotted to geography; and, with this basis, he is prepared to read and relish books of voyages, travels history, biography, 66c. 65c. The great, natural features of the globe, its continents, islands, peninsulas, mountains, oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, &c., are all' worthy 'of being learned. The boundaries of the nations, too, though often artificial, are sufficiently permanent to be learned, and so is the locationiof cities and towns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Geography Of late years the study of Physical Geography has made rapid advances; it forms part of the course of study in higher schools, and has its lectureships and professorships in various universities of the United States and Europe. It is recognized not only as an important study in itself, cultivating the habit of observation and of associating cause and effect, but also as an introduction, or rather an incitement, to the study of various sciences. Physical Geography, a description of Nature in What pertains to the Earth, is eclectic in character. Resting mainly on Geology, and only to a less degree upon Meteor ology, it reaches out to Astronomy, to Mineralogy, to Chemistry, to Biology, and even to History and Political Economy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public School Geography: Authorized for Use in the Public Schools, High Schools, and Collegiate Institutes of Ontario, by the Department of Education As the Public School Geography is intended for several years of study (extending over the whole Public School course) the earlier chapters of the book have been made very simple and have been couched in simple conversational language; as the book proceeds. However, the degree of minuteness with which the topics are treated increases somewhat, and the style becomes more formal and precise to allow of condensation of expression. In consequence. The various parts of Canada have not perhaps received that attention which their importance merits; if this appears so to the Teacher he can supple ment the matter here given by information obtained from the High School Geography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Geography: Physical, Economic and Regional The most important thing about the earth is the fact that it is a human planet, that men not only live upon it, but make. Somehow, a living out of it. The earth as a planet, a machine which goes and works, an organism which has grown and developed in the past and will continue to do so in the future, has never been so thoroughly studied and understood as it is to - day. The main result of such study, under the name of physical geography, has been a favorite subject in secondary schools. Some special phases of human activity, more or less closely related to the earth, such as products, manufactures, trade, races, customs, language, religion, and government, are everywhere taught under the names of commercial and political geography. But these different kinds of geography are seldom brought closely together, and the crowning relationship of all geographic science, the relation of the human species to its natural environment, is generally missed or but dim seen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope of School Geography Collaboration may have its dangers but it affords opportunity, of which we have availed ourselves fully, for criticism and argument. Perhaps collaborators feel more free to press their own views than he who merely confers the favour of reading an author's proof. And we may also admit that the subject of the book offers openings for alternative Opinions, although we have succeeded in reconciling our own. For geography is a big subject, so big that no man may ever know the whole of it; and we are concerned here not to lay down the boundaries of the whole of it, but only those of an inner circle, to wit, its application to secondary school teaching. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Geography Geography memorized, as words, is perhaps the least interesting and least profitable of all school studies. Geography so taught that its facts become pictures is the most engaging and attractive of all. The right study of Geography involves much exercise of the imagination, and its facts, beyond those of simple observation, can properly be presented only by calling in the agency of this faculty. No aim in the teaching of Geography can be true that does not recognize this. In the preparation of this book it has been the constant effort so to present the text, question, and illustration as to engage this most powerful function of the mind. How far the effort has been successful only use can determine, and at best it can be but partially so without the intelligent and enthusiastic cooperation of the teacher. The book can do little more than point the way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physical Geography The educational progress of recent years has resulted in two profitable advances for the venerable subject of Geography. A strong feeling has been developed in favor of treating the subject as a whole more rationally than heretofore, and a wholesome desire has arisen in favor of introducing some of its scientific aspects more generally into the school course. A natural accompaniment of this progress has been a demand for text-books that shall present Physical Geography in its modern scientific development as well as in an elementary form. The present book, reduced from the author's Physical Geography, has been prepared to meet this demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ontario Public School Geography The Department of Education, after open competition, decided to produce a new Public School Geography, entirely Canadian both in authorship and in point of View. Former text-books in Geography adapted from books issued in the United States have proved, in many respects, unsatisfactory. Therefore it was deemed expedient to utilize Canadian talent, to encourage Canadian enterprise, and to secure a thoroughly Canadian outlook, however formidable and hazardous such an undertaking might prove. An earnest attempt has been made to make the text suitable in style and content for the pupils of the elementary schools. As a result, many teachers will miss in these chapters the treatment of some topics usually supposed to be indispensable in a text-book in Geography. Other topics, usually treated extensively, have been simplified as much as possible. Teachers wishing to supplement the text-book by more extensive treatment, will find abundant material in the revised Teachers' Manual.
