Book excerpt: The chain store type of operation has had many forerunners. There are records indicating that central ownership and management of retail shops existed in ancient Greece and Rome. For example, an inscription on a wall in the ruins of Pompeii offered a five year lease on property including 900 retail shops. A Chinese merchant, On Lo Kass, established a chain of outlets as early as 200 B.C. In North America, chain organizations date back to 1970 when the Hudson's Bay Company was chartered by the British Crown. This organization continues to operate today with more than 250 trading posts and tne department stores located throughout Canada.
